Composition and Circulation

Chakra is refined from mental and physical energy. Physical training strengthens the body and will, allowing a ninja to increase their available chakra over time; an individual's reserves nevertheless impose a practical limit on training and technique use 18.

• Chakra is generated from the body's cells, circulates through the meridian system, gathers at chakra points, and is released from them 528.
• Refined chakra can theoretically be conducted to any part of the body through the meridians 28.
• Chakra can be shaped into tangible constructs, including armor, weapons, tails, and giant dōjutsu manifestations 227 315 370.

Origin and Spread

Kaguya Ōtsutsuki is regarded as the Progenitor of Chakra within the ninja world's established history. Humans already possessed chakra before its formal use, but the Sage of Six Paths spread chakra seeds and taught people to use chakra to connect their hearts, establishing Ninshū 155.

During Kiyoshi's journey one thousand years into the past, he teaches chakra to a desert settlement, establishes the Ancient Kingdom of Rōran with Rōran as its guardian, and later proclaims the establishment of Ninshū in the Land of Ancestors 492 505.

Nature Transformations

The five basic chakra natures are Fire, Wind, Lightning, Earth, and Water. Transformations beyond these standard natures are generally treated as secret techniques or kekkei genkai 19.

Most ninja master only one chakra nature, while mastery of two is associated with jōnin-level ability. Simultaneously employing multiple nature transformations is far rarer 282.

Ninjutsu and Bodily Enhancement

Chakra can be converted into elemental natures, expelled as techniques, or applied directly to the body.

• Lightning Release Chakra Mode coats the body in Lightning Release chakra, activating cells to raise speed, hardness, and defensive power 28 322.
• Chakra may function as disposable armor; Kiyoshi detaches a corroded layer of Lightning Release chakra after it blocks the Six-Tails' acid 227.
• A user with sufficient control can create a flowing five-nature chakra armor that improves speed, defense, recovery, and affinity with ninjutsu 468.
• Chakra can be condensed into solid weapons, including blades controlled remotely through chakra 315.

Genjutsu

Genjutsu manipulates chakra through sensory pathways and the target's nervous system.
