Chapter Thirty-Seven
On the battlefield, bullets and shells had no eyes, and wizards' spells were even worse.
Most spells cast by Official Wizards dealt damage over a wide area. Every cast produced terrifying shockwaves that instantly tore apart the earth, while the surging energy fluctuations made their power impossible to predict.
For Wizard Apprentices, facing such spells meant that death was almost inevitable. Even standing slightly out of position could get them torn to pieces in an instant.
As spells continued to erupt, the battlefield became a silent hell. The air was thick with lingering magical residue, while severed limbs floated through the air and corpses littered the ground.
Crater after crater covered the battlefield, as though the land itself had been deeply branded by magic.
Lynn paid close attention to his positioning, keeping a certain distance from the Official Wizards.
Even so, by the time he escaped a fierce wave of magical fluctuations, more than half the energy of the Heart of Flower Language had already been depleted. Only then did he struggle to find a relatively safe position.
"That was dangerous..."
Lynn took a deep breath, sweeping his gaze across the surroundings before looking up at the battle in the sky.
In the supernatural world, the outcome of a war was often decided by the clash between the strongest.
At that moment, Astrid, the Black Dragon Witch, was fighting one against two, fiercely contending with two Level 3 Great Wizards.
Though she moved with elegance and wore an indifferent expression, her power was undoubtedly suppressing her opponents.
The two Level 3 Great Wizards had joined forces, unleashing spell after spell, but beneath the Black Dragon Witch's immense pressure, they appeared increasingly unable to keep up as the situation gradually tipped against them.
Judging from the battle in the sky, The Furnace's advantage was growing greater and greater, and it continued to expand.
More reinforcements arrived without end. The wizards each unleashed powerful spells, while increasing numbers of enchanted tools joined the war.
Lynn caught sight of a group of apprentices working together to transport an enormous mechanical device. Its shape looked remarkably like a giant cannon.
Several apprentices swiftly loaded shells into the barrel, then fired with a thunderous blast, aiming directly at Night Shadow Bunker.
The instant the shell exploded, the heavens and earth shook. The shockwave swept through the area, killing many Night Shadow Bunker apprentices on the spot and destroying a large stretch of their defenses.
Boom!
After a deafening blast, Night Shadow Bunker's defensive line was directly shattered, with one corner reduced to ruins.
But this was merely one corner of the battlefield. Enchanted tools elsewhere continued to unleash tremendous destructive power.
From afar, Lynn saw strange aerial devices hovering above the battlefield. They released exceptionally intense energy fluctuations, continuously suppressing Night Shadow Bunker's defenses.
The disparity in resources between The Furnace and Night Shadow Bunker had been displayed in full.
Although Night Shadow Bunker possessed powerful Level 3 Wizards and a deep foundation, compared to The Furnace, a Level 4 Faction, it was clearly still stuck using relatively primitive methods of warfare.
The Furnace not only possessed elite Official Wizards, but had also developed modern tools of war such as infantry-tank coordination. The precision and destructive power of its tactical cooperation far surpassed Night Shadow Bunker's individual combat.
"You lot, come with me!"
At that moment, a Furnace squad suddenly appeared behind Lynn and the nearby apprentices. The leader was a powerful Level 3 Wizard Apprentice.
His aura was even somewhat stronger than Colin's. Through the Crystal Ball, Lynn detected that the man's spiritual power had reached 39 points, higher than that of most people Lynn had encountered before.
The squad swiftly incorporated Lynn and the other apprentices, gathering in a hidden corner.
The captain pointed toward one of Night Shadow Bunker's side halls, then gave brief instructions.
"That's the target. The Furnace's enchanted tools have already battered Night Shadow Bunker's defenses into disarray, and the outer formations have been destroyed. You can enter."
At that moment, the main forces on the battlefield were locked in fierce combat, with powerful wizards from both sides engaging in battle on the main front.
Under such circumstances, the treasure sites inside Night Shadow Bunker had instead become relatively safe areas. One of The Furnace's objectives was to take the opportunity to enter and seize the resources and treasures within.
"These are your spatial tools."
The captain continued his brief explanation, handing everyone an item similar to a storage bag. "Store any resources and treasures you find inside. The method is simple. Just put them in."
Lynn was no stranger to the spatial tool before him.
Although it was expensive enough that he had never been able to afford one himself, he now had a chance to use one by riding The Furnace's momentum.
Fine. Being absorbed into this squad is better than staying on the main battlefield. And judging by these spatial tools, this squad probably isn't one of those 'suicide armies' I joined before...
Holding the spatial tool, he stepped into the squad with that thought in mind.
"Follow me!"
The captain ordered, turning to lead the squad toward Night Shadow Bunker's side hall.
Their squad was not the only one. There were naturally quite a few squads like theirs, splitting up and heading toward Night Shadow Bunker's treasure sites.
As for why The Furnace was so familiar with Night Shadow Bunker's layout, that was naturally because...
A traitor had already emerged within Night Shadow Bunker, and not from the lower ranks, but from the middle and upper ranks.
As they drew closer and closer to Night Shadow Bunker, Lynn could feel the concentration of negative energy particles in the surroundings gradually increasing.
Ahead stood a towering castle. Its once-majestic presence had been ravaged by war, its outer walls shattered and a huge passage blasted open by artillery fire, wide enough for them to enter.
Just then, another Furnace squad approached from the distance.
The captains of the two squads exchanged a glance, a trace of mutual understanding flashing through their eyes. With almost no words exchanged, they each chose a different route.
The mission was urgent and time was precious. No one wished to waste even a second.
As the two squads passed each other in the narrow corridor, three gazes suddenly met, and the air seemed to freeze in an instant.
Lynn's eyes abruptly narrowed. From the other squad, two pairs of eyes were likewise fixed upon him.
Lynn saw Riley in the opposing squad, his gaze vicious and the corners of his mouth raised in a cold smile brimming with killing intent.
Beside Riley stood another figure. Lynn did not recognize him, but he could more or less guess that he was White's backer.
Although Lynn knew that White's death had not been exposed to others, given Riley's relationship with this man, he certainly would not stand by and do nothing. He would definitely make a move against Lynn; it was obvious from the equally icy look in his eyes.
Among this group of apprentices, Riley and the apprentice beside him clearly did not dare to attack Lynn directly.
But in the instant they passed one another, Riley suddenly sneered and drew a finger across his throat, the provocation unmistakable, as though he could not wait to cut Lynn down with his sword at some later moment.
