Background / History

The Cosmic Zerg are controlled by a super-lifeform called the Overlord. Their swarms consume resources to expand and can travel in groups between the main universe and alternate universes. Even a minor swarm could destroy the Blue Crystal Federation; larger swarms threaten far stronger nations 17.

The Koprulu Zerg are native to a different universe and are explicitly distinct from the Cosmic Zerg. A powerful civilization modified them, and they became one of the Koprulu Sector's three major powers. After their former leader died during a war with the Protoss, the Queen of Blades, Kerrigan, took control 23.

Organization and Abilities

Cosmic Zerg swarms

• Expansion — Their reproductive capacity and biotechnology allow them to devour resources and rapidly enlarge their swarms 17.
• Bio-warships — War Centipedes serve as anti-starship forces. The ten encountered by Star Origin measured 1,000–2,000 meters; eight had Level 2 energy output and two had Level 3 17.
• Command — A Brood Queen was present with those warships. Elsewhere, a Brain Bug controlled nearby Zerg through psychic power 17 19.
• Combat limits — The War Centipedes fought by firing corrosive bio-energy. Damage to their bio-fields made them more vulnerable to Star Origin's cannon 18.

Koprulu Zerg

• Ground forces — Their units include Zerglings, Hydralisks, corrosive Roaches, and heavily armored Ultralisks 24.
• Space and air forces — During the invasion of Mar Sara, three Leviathans operated alongside thousands of Corruptors and hundreds of thousands of Mutalisks 24.
• Invasion infrastructure — The swarm covered much of Mar Sara with creep, air-dropped ground troops, and raised biological structures near resource sites 24.

Story Role / Major Arcs

• Starfire Alliance front — A Cosmic Zerg swarm devastates a human-held planet while its main force attacks the Starfire Alliance. Star Origin destroys ten War Centipedes, uses nuclear weapons against surface troops, and kills a Brood Queen 17 18.
• Starfire Alliance siege — The broader swarm continues to overwhelm human defenses across multiple star systems. After the Brood Queen's death, the swarm abruptly pulls back, leaving the defenders bewildered 19.
• Mar Sara invasion — Koprulu Zerg besiege Jim Raynor's forces. Feng Xiao holds one flank during the evacuation, while Star Origin's crew confronts other forces elsewhere 24 25 26.
• Clash with Kerrigan — Feng Xiao fights the Queen of Blades while Raynor's Raiders attack a Zerg hive. The Raiders destroy the hive, and Kerrigan survives the encounter 26 27.
