Background

Zhao Cang operates the Zhao Family Martial Academy and accepts students who can still train based on his physical assessment of their bones. Lin Tian enters the academy after paying three months of tuition, with Zhao Cang teaching him the fundamentals of martial cultivation and the Mountain-Shaking Fist 4 5.

When Lin Tian rapidly learns the complete Mountain-Shaking Fist routine, Zhao Cang openly praises his comprehension as extraordinary. However, after testing Lin Tian's Bone Quality and confirming it is Inferior, he concludes that this sudden comprehension is only a fleeting inspiration and that Lin Tian's prospects on the martial path remain extremely limited 6 7.

He identifies Xiao Tian's aptitude quickly and gives him repeated personal instruction after Xiao Tian grasps the breathing rhythm of the Mountain-Shaking Fist. Zhao Cang later accepts Xiao Tian as his final disciple, holding an apprenticeship ceremony and a subsequent banquet for the occasion 10 11 13. Zhao Cang initially judges Lin Tian's Inferior Bone Quality as a decisive limit. Although he acknowledges Lin Tian's breakthrough to Bright Force, he waives the Inner Academy tea-offering ceremony and provides only the standard entry pill, directing most of his attention toward Xiao Tian instead 22 24.

As the Martial Examination approaches, Zhao Cang mistakes Lin Tian's decision to stop staying late for practice as a loss of confidence following Xiao Tian's Dark Force breakthrough. He arranges an arena match to select a disciple for the final nomination slot and focused training, initially expecting Zhou Ya or Qian Wang to win. Lin Tian instead reveals his Dark Force cultivation, prompting Zhao Cang to award him the nomination directly 38 39 40 41.

Lin Tian's breakthrough to Dark Force forces Zhao Cang to reassess him. After personally confirming that Lin Tian still has Inferior Bone Quality, Zhao Cang attributes his rapid growth to “Heavenly Perception” and begins providing two Blood-Qi Pills per month 41 43. Even then, he continues to favor Xiao Tian with substantially greater resources 43 47. He also withholds an additional pill intended for Lin Tian after his breakthrough to reassure Xiao Tian 64.

Before the Martial Examination, Zhao Cang permits his Inner Academy disciples to join a bandit-suppression operation, reasoning that martial artists must eventually see blood and trusting that a Transformation Force friend serving with the Commandery Captain's Office can safeguard them. When the disciples return injured, he arranges quality medicine for them and is particularly relieved that Xiao Tian survived and killed three Water Bandits 58 59. He hopes Xiao Tian will eventually reach Transformation Force, allowing Zhao Cang to rest easy 59.

During Wang Gu's pre-examination challenge, Zhao Cang sends Lin Tian to face Xu Bailiang rather than risk Xiao Tian. Lin Tian's calm handling of the Through-Back Martial Hall disciple and advanced Mountain-Shaking Fist control make Zhao Cang begin questioning whether he had fundamentally misjudged him 53 54 56.

Zhao Cang had originally intended to send Zhang Ming, but changes his choice after noticing Wang Gu's suspicious smile. Believing that only Xiao Tian and Zhang Ming have a realistic chance of passing the examination, he exposes Lin Tian to the risk of injury or lost nomination points while privately intending to compensate him afterward 54. Despite Lin Tian's impressive performance, Zhao Cang spends a day considering the matter and again decides to concentrate his efforts on Xiao Tian, regarding Lin Tian's future as too uncertain. He leaves open the possibility of additional support if Lin Tian maintains his progress after the examination 57.

During the Martial Examination, Zhao Cang gradually realizes the depth of Lin Tian's mastery over the Mountain-Shaking Fist, including his comprehension of Weight-Lifting as Lightness. Lin Tian's eventual victory as Top Candidate leaves Zhao Cang regretting his earlier contempt and missed opportunity to properly nurture him 63 64 69. The result also brings Zhao Cang the prospect of three years of Blood Coagulation Pills and official recognition for his academy 66.

Both Zhang Ming and Xiao Tian fail the examination, leaving Lin Tian as the disciple capable of fulfilling Zhao Cang's hopes 65. The potential official recognition includes designation by the Commandery Captain's Office and relocation of the academy into the Inner City as a martial hall, with Zhao Cang becoming its hall master 66.

After the examination banquet, Zhao Cang asks why Lin Tian has returned so early from the second banquet, which he regards as an important opportunity to secure backing for further cultivation. He believes that Lin Tian's Inferior Bone Quality will make reaching Transformation Force exceptionally difficult without abundant resources, and considers personally raising another Transformation Force martial artist beyond his own means 72. He later asks about Lin Tian's cultivation difficulties, then privately rebukes himself for expecting a breakthrough too soon 78.

After Lin Tian later breaks through to Transformation Force, Zhao Cang senses the new power and can only offer a terse expression of approval, further demonstrating how far his former student has surpassed his earlier expectations 94.

That evening, Zhao Cang receives a warning from the Commandery Captain's Office about increasing Water Bandit activity. He closes the academy, advises his disciples to move closer to the Inner City, and arranges rooms for Lin Tian and Zhang Ming 94.

Years later, Lin Tian returns to the academy and leaves behind pills capable of assisting a breakthrough to Transformation Force. Zhao Cang, aware of Lin Tian's later status and achievements, is left with profound regret over how he treated him 250. His regret is sharpened by recognizing that Lin Tian treats Zhang Ming with greater warmth, while Zhang Ming celebrates the connection represented by Lin Tian continuing to call him Senior Brother 250.

Appearance

Zhao Cang is a tall, broad-built man with heavily developed muscles and an intimidating physical presence.

He is deeply responsive to martial talent. Xiao Tian's rapid advancement earns his pride, private instruction, extensive resources, and the status of final disciple. By contrast, Zhao Cang treats Lin Tian's perseverance as futile because of his Inferior Bone Quality, repeatedly assuming that effort cannot compensate for poor aptitude 15 22 36.

His judgments can be inconsistent and heavily shaped by aptitude. He praises Lin Tian's early mastery of the Mountain-Shaking Fist but dismisses it as short-lived enlightenment after learning of his Inferior Bone Quality, and he similarly misinterprets Lin Tian's request to leave early on Xiao Tian's banquet day as a weakness of temperament 6 7 13. He treats Xiao Tian's displeasure at Lin Tian's advancement as understandable youthful temperament while limiting Lin Tian's resources partly to keep Xiao Tian reassured 43 64.

Despite his bias, Zhao Cang is not wholly malicious. He protects his disciples from provocations that could jeopardize their Martial Examination eligibility, permits them to gain practical experience through bandit suppression, provides medicine to injured students, and eventually recognizes Lin Tian's ability when confronted with undeniable results 53 58 59 69.

He places considerable weight on long-term prospects and the academy's material interests. His caution leads him to protect the disciples he considers most likely to earn examination honors, even at the expense of Lin Tian, and to retain Xiao Tian as his primary investment despite growing evidence of Lin Tian's ability 53 54 57. Nevertheless, when expecting Zhou Ya to defeat Lin Tian in their proposed selection match, he explicitly orders restraint because he does not want Lin Tian injured 40.

When Water Bandit activity intensifies, Zhao Cang temporarily closes the academy following an official warning and makes arrangements for Lin Tian and Zhang Ming to stay nearer the Inner City 94.

Xiao Tian's Rise

He discovers Xiao Tian's aptitude, gives him exceptional personal guidance, formally accepts him as his final disciple, and treats Xiao Tian as the academy's principal hope for the Martial Examination 10 11 13 24.

Even after Lin Tian's performance against Xu Bailiang causes him to reconsider his judgment, Zhao Cang decides that Xiao Tian's long-term prospects remain more dependable and continues prioritizing him 56 57.

Lin Tian's Recognition

Zhao Cang repeatedly underestimates Lin Tian because of his Inferior Bone Quality. Lin Tian's Dark Force breakthrough, advanced fist technique, Martial Examination performance, and eventual Transformation Force breakthrough compel Zhao Cang to acknowledge that he misjudged him 36 41 63 69 94.

His doubts persist after the examination: he fears that Lin Tian cannot obtain the resources needed to reach Transformation Force and later considers his own hopes for a swift breakthrough unrealistic. Lin Tian's eventual confirmation of the realm leaves Zhao Cang able to offer only a brief acknowledgment 72 78 94.

Martial Examination and Wang Gu's Challenge

Zhao Cang navigates Wang Gu's attempt to provoke a disciple duel before the Martial Examination. He refuses to risk Xiao Tian, sends Lin Tian to face Xu Bailiang, and later watches Lin Tian demonstrate far greater ability than expected 53 54 56. Lin Tian's examination success raises the prospect of a three-year Blood Coagulation Pill allotment for Zhao Cang and official recognition for his academy 66 69.

Zhang Ming and Xiao Tian both fail the examination, overturning Zhao Cang's earlier assessment of which disciples could secure its rewards 54 65. Lin Tian's success also presents the possibility of Zhao Cang becoming the master of an officially designated Inner City martial hall 66.

Later Regret

After Lin Tian becomes a prominent cultivator, Zhao Cang receives his former student’s return visit and the pills he leaves for the academy. The encounter emphasizes Zhao Cang's regret over failing to value Lin Tian when he had the chance 250.

Zhao Cang and Zhang Ming have learned about Lin Tian's identity and standing through news from Gaoyan Prefecture City. Whereas Zhang Ming feels excited by the enduring bond with his junior brother, Zhao Cang notices Lin Tian's greater warmth toward Zhang Ming and is left regretting his own conduct 250.
