Overview

The Gang Realm is a major dividing line in martial cultivation. Unlike earlier realms, which focus on tempering and refining power already within the body, advancement requires drawing in the spiritual energy of heaven and earth to cleanse true qi and transform it into True Gang 190.

True Gang is far more condensed than true qi and represents a dramatic leap in combat power. A newly advanced Gang Realm cultivator can regard their former Core Condensation self as vastly weaker, while even the aftershocks of a clash between Outer Gang experts can endanger nearby disciples 202 216.

Within a prefecture city, Gang Realm experts are treated as its foremost combat forces. Foreign Gang Realm cultivators are not permitted to enter another prefecture city's sphere of influence without authorization because of the scale of destruction they may cause 226.

Gang Realm completion is the realm's upper limit, although exceptional Half-Step True Essence Realm cultivators are recognized as possessing abilities beyond ordinary True Gang while not yet having fully entered the True Essence Realm 387 436.

Half-Step True Essence is not a separate completed cultivation realm. Its practitioners compress True Gang to produce greater power, but remain, in essence, stronger Gang Realm completion cultivators until they actually form True Essence 436 439.

Although the gap between the Gang and True Essence Realms is ordinarily considered insurmountable, extraordinary foundations can produce combat power far beyond a cultivator's formal realm. After fusing five strands of Peerless True Gang, Lin Tian's Primordial True Qi was repeatedly judged to be nearly comparable to True Essence, allowing him to defeat dozens of elite Gang Realm cultivators without injury while remaining in the Gang Realm 468 472 479 487.

Lin Tian subsequently assessed himself as capable of contending with ordinary True Essence Realm experts, but still considered traveling alone to the Hebei Region too dangerous before formally advancing. His exceptional combat strength did not remove the practical advantages of completing the next realm breakthrough 492.

Gang Realm martial artists generally have lifespans of no more than a hundred years, with accumulated injuries and declining qi and blood potentially shortening that span further. Entering the True Essence Realm is therefore vital both for greater power and for a substantially longer life 496.

The realm's social importance varies with the scale of the faction. A Gang Realm practitioner can dominate a region outside the great sects, yet among Dao Origin Sect's True Disciples, those still in the Gang Realm occupy the lower ranks and remain vulnerable to replacement challenges. True Essence Realm cultivators provide a more durable foundation for a sect's long-term development 261 322 496.

Reaching the Gang Realm at twenty is regarded as an exceptional achievement. Mo Sheli and the Heavenly Derivation Sect's Academy Masters interpret Lin Tian's advancement as evidence of extraordinary potential, a strong likelihood of eventually reaching Gang Realm completion, and the possibility of succeeding Mo Sheli as sect master. Lin Tian's father also associates Gang Realm cultivation with army commander-in-chief-level figures from his military experience 228 245 249.

Breakthrough

A Gang Realm breakthrough requires the refinement of true qi through heaven-and-earth spiritual energy. It depends on the “timing of heaven,” the advantage of location, and the cultivator's own talent, comprehension, temperament, and preparation 190.

• The first encounter with heaven-and-earth spiritual energy is the cultivator's best opportunity to succeed 215.
• A failed breakthrough damages the meridians and acupoints; repeated failures worsen that damage and reduce the likelihood of future success 215.
• Breakthrough experience cannot be directly passed on to others because each person's baptism by spiritual energy is unique 215.
• Gang Condensation Pills can directly improve the probability of a successful breakthrough, while items such as the Earth Vein Marrow Bead can temper attribute-aligned true qi and True Gang 217 231.
• Age is a major factor: after thirty, the difficulty of advancing to the Gang Realm increases sharply 231.
• The breakthrough is the cultivator's first baptism by heaven-and-earth spiritual energy, making the process exceptionally dangerous and intolerant of mistakes 215.
• Peak Core Condensation cultivators commonly spend years consolidating their foundations before attempting advancement. The success rate is described as less than one percent, underscoring the importance of preparation and opportunity 190.
• Even a slight change in heavenly timing can throw the incoming heaven-and-earth power into disorder and disrupt or defeat the breakthrough 190.

Lin Tian's own breakthrough occurs when his Geng Metal True-Condensing Art reaches its sixth layer. Heaven-and-earth spiritual power pours into his body and refines his Geng Metal True Qi without causing him pain or discomfort; the initial condensation takes place overnight, followed by three days spent completing the conversion of that strand 216.

The prospect of using the Blood Baleful Divine Art to enter the Gang Realm creates a dangerous temptation for cultivators seeking a shortcut. Lin Tian suspects that the art can progressively damage its users' sanity, making its promise of advancement a potential source of widespread disorder 171.

True Gang

Formation and control

True Gang is the refined form of true qi produced upon advancement. It is several times stronger than true qi and can be manifested externally as concentrated, attribute-colored power 216.

• Gang Realm combatants can form protective layers of True Gang against attacks and explosives 219.
• Skilled practitioners can release True Gang with minimal outward disturbance, reflecting precise control rather than weak output 202.
• A Gang Realm expert's aura is distinct enough to create pressure that Core Condensation cultivators cannot match 219.
• The realm's strength gap over Core Condensation is described as chasm-like 216.
• An unusually deep True Gang foundation can allow a Gang Realm cultivator to suppress opponents of a higher stage, as Lin Tian did against the late-stage Jian Jiu while only at the middle stage 328.
• Even when its power approaches the True Essence Realm, a cultivator's energy remains True Gang unless they complete the actual breakthrough to True Essence 479.

True Gang cultivation and physical-body cultivation are distinct. Lin Tian remains physically at the Core Condensation level after entering the Gang Realm, then later raises his Demon-Subduing Golden Body to the Golden Raiment Realm, giving his body strength and defense comparable to Gang Realm experts. He judges this physical power sufficient to kill same-stage opponents without relying on his True Gang 232 297.

Brief levitation is possible through exceptional methods, but is not established as an ordinary ability of the realm. With three strands of True Gang and the Formless Combat Technique, Lin Tian briefly lifts his body into the air for his family; he cannot maintain the effect for long 249.

Outer Gang

Outer Gang is the common name for True Gang Projection, an advanced application reliably attained in the late Gang Realm 368.

• Projected True Gang can take forms such as crescent-shaped blades and cleave solid stone 368.
• Before late Gang Realm, projected True Gang generally dissipates after traveling only a few zhang 368.
• At late Gang Realm, it can sustain attacks at far greater distances 368.

Attribute and quality

Ordinary True Gang derives from the Five Elements, and its attribute can generally be recognized by its color 232.

• Cultivators may possess more than one strand of True Gang, creating a deeper and stronger foundation than that of ordinary practitioners 254 269.
• Multiple strands need not have different attributes. Gu Qingtian's three strands initially share the same attribute and cannot be fused in the manner of Lin Tian's elemental strands 269.
• Five-Element True Gangs can be fused through specialized methods and corresponding elemental supreme treasures 227.
• Uneven refinement between fused strands can destabilize their balance; improving only one strand may cause it to suppress the others 357.

Fused True Gang

Fused True Gang is produced by combining multiple compatible strands of True Gang into a single, more powerful stream.

• Lin Tian first fused Azure Wood and Thick Earth True Gang, forming a black-and-white Chaos True Gang whose strength greatly exceeded either component 232.
• A partially completed Chaos True Gang may be regarded as Heterogeneous True Gang, though its unique trait may remain dormant until further fusion is achieved 232.

Heterogeneous True Gang is an extraordinary form of True Gang whose power exceeds ordinary martial-path True Gang and which possesses a special trait 232.

• Black Baleful True Gang of the Flesh and Blood Divine Sect can absorb cultivation and flesh 232.
• Lin Tian's black-and-white Chaos True Gang is considered a likely Heterogeneous True Gang, though its trait had not yet manifested when it was first formed 232.
• Long Wukong possesses Heterogeneous True Gang alongside Sword Momentum and Saber Momentum 254.

Cultivation within the Realm

Progress through the Gang Realm remains extremely resource-intensive even for talented cultivators. Gang Realm geniuses seeking further advancement require exceptional talent as well as access to pills, spiritual objects, and other rare resources 261.

• Supreme treasures can temper True Gang of matching elemental attributes 217.
• A Gang Ascension Pill improves the quality of a single strand of True Gang, rather than automatically elevating every strand a cultivator possesses 357.
• Secret Realm Origin Power can refine True Gang and contribute to the elevation of its quality 368.
• Some cultivators can achieve autonomous True Gang cultivation, dramatically accelerating their progress within the realm 382.
• Spiritual artifact treasures can absorb a cultivator's True Gang into the weapon itself, strengthening it from its foundation beyond ordinary external reinforcement 403.
• Secret Realm Origin Crystals are superior to ordinary Secret Realm Origin Power and can assist a cultivator's breakthrough to the True Essence Realm without harming their foundation 388.
• A cultivator with multiple True Gang strands requires far more resources than an ordinary practitioner to raise their quality and later advance to True Essence; Lin Tian estimates that his five-strand foundation requires more than five times the usual amount of Secret Realm Origin Power 465.

Lin Tian's autonomous cultivation depends on the interaction of his Golden Raiment-level Demon-Subduing Golden Body and his Sea of Consciousness. After demonstrating a refinement process once, he can have his body continue it independently; he later successfully extends this principle to True Gang cultivation itself 368 382.

Physical development can also determine how safely a cultivator exploits powerful resources. Lin Tian experiences an enhancement so violent that dispersing his cultivation appears to be the only available way to stop it; the imbalance between his True Gang strands ultimately halts the process. He consequently stores further Secret Realm Origin Power until his body can withstand additional improvement 438.

Even after Flesh Reconstruction increases his cultivation speed by nearly half, Lin Tian estimates that reaching the middle Gang Realm with his existing resources would take almost a year. His projected advancement at twenty-one would still substantially outpace the Hundred Sects' other geniuses, including Long Wukong and Gu Qingtian, despite his simultaneous cultivation of five elemental strands and an external body-tempering art 297.

Exceptional combat techniques can temporarily produce power above a practitioner's ordinary standing without changing their cultivation realm. Yan Shaowu's cumulative saber technique is described as capable of building toward a final strike at the Half-Step True Essence level while he remains at Gang Realm completion. Liang Wankuo likewise combines his completion-level True Gang with Blade Intent and the Ninefold Thunder Firmament Saber Art to unleash an attack whose aura appears to surpass the Gang Realm 337 403 404 405.

Advancement to True Essence

Advancement beyond the Gang Realm requires a genuine transformation of True Gang into True Essence, not merely an increase in combat power. Liang Wankuo's successful attempt illustrates the process: he compresses his True Gang within the dantian to an extreme degree until it disappears and reforms as a brilliant golden strand of True Essence 503.

• A True Transformation Pill and stored Secret Realm Origin Power can support the attempt 503.
• Recovery from earlier injuries and experience from a previous failed attempt improve Liang Wankuo's prospects; with these advantages, he estimates a success probability of at least seventy percent 503.
• Psychological fear from an earlier failure can remain an obstacle even when the cultivator has sufficient resources and preparation 503.
• A successful breakthrough condenses Martial Dao Will, also called a Martial Dao Dharma Body. Liang Wankuo manifests a golden longsaber covered in scale-like patterns 503.
• Forming True Essence permits the cultivator to cleanse the physical body and surpass the ordinary hundred-year limit of human life, a benefit unavailable through Gang Realm cultivation alone 255.

After fulfilling his resource-sharing agreement with Murong Yun, Lin Tian begins secluded cultivation specifically to enter the True Essence Realm. He subsequently reveals his True Essence cultivation in public and defeats Liang Wankuo with one strike. Later, the Heavenly Steed Pulse Master discusses his extraordinary strength “back when he was in the Gang Realm,” treating that realm as a completed stage of his cultivation 503 511 523.
