Background / History

Hua Chengming is the master of the Heavenly Derivation Sect's Wood Courtyard. Though his administration is notably lax and has drawn criticism from sect higher-ups, he insists that he has a reason to remain in the position. He views a courtyard master's disciples as the clearest proof of his worth and seeks to restore the Wood Courtyard's standing through their achievements. 153

Before becoming the Wood Courtyard Master, Hua traveled with Murong Yun. Murong recalls that Hua concealed a True Essence Realm cultivation while presenting himself as merely a Core Condensation Realm cultivator; only when the pair were surrounded and facing death did Hua reveal his true strength. 285

Hua was a few years younger than Murong Yun, who was still in the Core Condensation Realm at the time of this revelation. The disparity left such a deep impression that Murong later regarded Hua's interest in Lin Tian as evidence of Lin's exceptional potential. 285

During a war between the Heavenly Derivation Sect and the Spirit Jade Sect, Hua targeted and killed so many of the invading sect's young geniuses that he threatened to leave a gap in their generation. According to accounts of the conflict, he evaded pursuit by a True Essence Realm sect master for months in the Three Ultimates Death Land. That pursuer was later gravely wounded in an ambush, suffered a fall in cultivation, and died. Hua's responsibility for the ambush is not established, but the war left lasting hostility between the two sects. 255 256

Hua Chengming is the Hua Tianming recorded among the previous generation's geniuses of the Dao Origin Sect's Heavenly Steed Lineage. He departed the Dao Origin Sect eighteen years before his return and describes the intervening period only as aimless wandering. Yu Xiangtian considers Hua's talent great enough that, had he remained, the Dao Origin Sect Master position might have gone to him instead. 392

Hua's teaching reputation also rests on Mu Qingxue, who was once regarded as Gaoyan Prefecture City's foremost genius. Mo Sheli considers her achievements evidence of Hua's ability to cultivate disciples, despite his reservations about Hua's other abilities. 185

After Lin Tian defeated Liang Wankuo and secured a True Disciple position, Hua obtained Yu Xiangtian's Sect Master Token and entered the upper levels of the Dao Derivation Tower. He was still inside the tower when Yu asked about him before the Secret Realm expedition. 437

Hua's influence on Lin Tian is sufficiently apparent that Yu Xiangtian later uses Hua's past conduct as a standard for interpreting Lin's cautious and uncharacteristic actions, judging Lin's temperament to be nearly a copy of Hua's younger self. Yu also regards Lin as already Hua's disciple and regrets being unable to take Lin as his own disciple. 441 487

After the Secret Realm expedition, Hua met Lin Tian again and collected ten Secret Realm Origin Crystals in exchange for the compass he had previously entrusted to him. He then departed for the Heavenly Derivation Sect. 520

Appearance

Hua Chengming appears not much older than his disciple Mu Qingxue despite being her master. He is frequently described with lazy or half-lidded eyes and a relaxed manner, often drinking tea or attending an alchemy furnace even during serious discussions. 136 225

Despite his manipulative streak, he provides substantial aid to those he chooses to cultivate. He gives Lin Tian rare resources, techniques, political advice, and support in concealing dangerous achievements. His guidance emphasizes patience and measured self-revelation rather than reckless ambition. 154 173 226 228

Hua maintains exceptionally high standards in judging talent. He considers ordinary people incapable of catching his eye, yet places enough confidence in Lin Tian to wager his own access to the Dao Derivation Tower on Lin's ability to challenge a Top Ten True Disciple. 392 393

He recognizes aspects of his own younger self in Lin Tian's willingness to disregard dignity for practical benefits and refusal to promise assistance beyond his abilities.
