"If I'd known he was that kind of person..." Herpo let out a long breath. "Perhaps the best thing we could have done was arrange for someone to enter Hogwarts."

Calchas curled his lip. "Even if you'd known the Guardian's personality early on, how could you be sure... that you really would have done that?"

Herpo raised an eyebrow and lowered his voice. "What do you mean?"

"What did you say back then?" Calchas reminded him. "That Guardian would become a sacrifice, so there was no need for us to care about him..."

Herpo had indeed said those words. Unable to refute them, he could only let out a cold laugh. "Heh heh!"

Herpo and Calchas were both in fairly good moods. By comparison, Voldemort's mood had already soured to the extreme.

As he recalled the past events involving Wizet, the anger in his heart only grew fiercer the more he thought about them.

They had both taught Wizet things, so why had he and Snape received treatment so vastly different from what Snape had received?

His anger intensified until it completely consumed his thoughts. At that moment, all he wanted was to vent it.

Just then, Herpo's cold laughter reached his ears.

Herpo's sneer was like a spark, instantly igniting the rage he had nowhere to release.

He no longer suppressed his fury. Raising his wand sharply, he pointed it at Herpo. "Crucio!"

Herpo was caught completely off guard, unable to react before Voldemort's Cruciatus Curse struck him.

He fell stiffly to the floor, his back immediately arching. His eyes bulged wide, and though his mouth hung open, no sound emerged from it—only hoarse "huh huh" noises from deep in his throat.

Faced with the agony inflicted by the Cruciatus Curse, all he could do was struggle on instinct.
