Background / History

Otherworlder and teleportation research

Nanahoshi is a Japanese girl transported to the Six-Faced World with her physical body. Because of this, she initially cannot use magic or infuse mana herself. Her foremost goal is returning to Japan, leading her to obsessively study teleportation circles despite the limitation. 170 67

When she meets Rudeus, she is relieved to find another person from Earth. Rudeus agrees to aid her research, asking only that she greet his mother if Nanahoshi ever returns home. 65 Nanahoshi’s technical drawings are highly complex, though some of her early circles fail because their linked components do not properly connect. Aisha identifies the flaw and becomes Nanahoshi’s research partner. 80

Nanahoshi later concludes that she cannot immediately return merely by completing a circle: she believes another person must be transported to the world first. To survive the wait, she begins designing a mana-powered hibernation pod. 124

Previous timeline

In a prior timeline, Nanahoshi forms an uneasy alliance with a far harsher Rudeus. She offers information on Orsted and helps fund and arrange Rudeus’s attempts to cure Zenith, including purchasing test subjects for his brain-invading magic experiments. 170 171

Although initially afraid of him, Nanahoshi attempts to build a friendship through their shared Earth origin. She also challenges Rudeus over his treatment of Aisha and his increasingly uncontrolled experimentation. 171 174 149 Over time, the two develop a close but unspoken physical relationship while collaborating on a mana-storage device and time magic. 177 178

Before Rudeus’s failed attempt to kill Orsted, Nanahoshi assists with his preparations and hides at his request. Orsted later finds the research notes for their time-magic and mana-storage work. 178

Dragonkin research

Nanahoshi eventually becomes Dragonkin through a potion. The transformation allows her to use mana, which greatly expands her ability to create and test magic tools. 184 208

Her long-term potion research shifts toward extending Rudeus’s lifespan. After reorganizing years of data, she realizes that using her own Dragonkin blood as a sample is insufficient; she requires blood from true dragons of many species. 221 258 Rudeus agrees to accompany her on dragon-hunting expeditions, and Lara later helps guide the search for a legendary dragon. 258 262

Nanahoshi ultimately bargains with the World-Gazing Dragon, Ilsarion. In exchange for allowing it to view her and Rudeus’s memories and an unrealized future, she receives far more dragon blood than requested—enough to potentially extend the lives of Rudeus’s family and some descendants severalfold. 263 270

Alternate futures and life on Earth

Through Ilsarion’s transaction, Nanahoshi sees an alternate Earth life in which she meets Chinese traveler Lu Yang at sixteen. Their chance encounter becomes a long-distance relationship, then cohabitation in Japan, discussions of marriage, and a trip to China to meet his family. 264 265 266

The visions also show a different future in which Nanahoshi returns only after Rudeus’s death, places a black ring on his hand to claim the status of his wife, and spends decades continuing her search for Ilsarion. 267 268

Relationship with Rudeus

After witnessing the future where Nanahoshi never abandons her search after Rudeus’s death, both are forced to confront the depth of their attachment. Nanahoshi admits that she no longer knows where she belongs and asks Rudeus to help her pursue happiness. 270 272

They confess their feelings, kiss, and return to the Greyrat home together as lovers. Nanahoshi initially asks Rudeus not to publicly announce their relationship because she is not accustomed to the family seeing her as his partner. 272 273 She gradually becomes fully integrated into the household, is recognized as Rudeus’s fifth wife, and later confirms that she is pregnant. 302 320

Appearance

Nanahoshi is a black-haired, black-eyed woman whose long hair is often left loose or pinned up while working. Her Dragonkin transformation alters her physiology, though no distinct visible Dragonkin traits are described. 267 272 280

  • Long, smooth black hair 149 281
  • Black eyes 272
  • Usually associated with laboratory documents, magic circles, and magic tools 253 258

Personality

Nanahoshi is direct, impatient, and intensely focused on research. She openly criticizes people who ignore the potential of magic and is willing to demand Rudeus’s assistance without softening the request. 65 258 She describes herself as selfish, yet her major research projects repeatedly center on helping Rudeus, from lifespan extension to acquiring dragon blood. 258

She often masks care with sarcasm or bluntness. Nanahoshi can immediately recognize when Rudeus is troubled, warns him when his behavior toward Aisha becomes unhealthy, and urges him to take breaks from destructive experimentation. 149 174 221 Her comfort around Rudeus is so instinctive that they can anticipate each other’s needs without finishing sentences. 253 255

Despite her outward composure, Nanahoshi struggles with loneliness and uncertainty over where she belongs. The Greyrat family’s invitation to visit more often gives her a sense of acceptance, while her eventual relationship with Rudeus gives her a new personal goal: living happily. 222 272
