Background / History

Goku trained on North King Kai’s planet after his death, where he met Jiang Ling and continued developing the Kaioken and Spirit Bomb. Initially wary of Jiang Ling’s Saiyan tail, he accepted him after realizing Kami had personally endorsed him. 8 10

Shenron revived Goku shortly before Vegeta’s arrival on Earth. He returned through Snake Way, reunited with his friends at Kami’s Lookout, and went home to Chi-Chi and Gohan after a year apart. 10 11 13

During the Saiyan invasion, Goku pushed his body to its limits using the triple Kaioken against Vegeta. He was severely injured after Vegeta became a Great Ape, but still chose to spare Vegeta because he wanted a future rematch. 19 20

After recovering, Goku traveled to Namek with the others. The Grand Elder unlocked his potential, after which Goku confronted Frieza directly and fought to prevent Namek’s destruction. 28 36 40 42

Personality

Goku is cheerful, straightforward, and intensely motivated by the chance to fight strong opponents. He openly asks Beerus for a spar after learning he is a God of Destruction, and he volunteers to fight Dabura before properly remembering the villain’s name. 205 177

His love of combat does not outweigh his concern for others. He warns his allies away from Beerus, fights to protect Chi-Chi when their home is threatened, and refuses to let Earth be destroyed even when faced with an overwhelming opponent. 131 205 206

He is also unusually merciful toward enemies he considers worth fighting again. Despite Vegeta’s role in killing several of his friends, Goku asks Jiang Ling to let him leave so they can have another all-out battle someday. 20
