Background / History
Family Poison Backlash
Dugu Yan inherited the Jade Phosphorus Snake martial soul, whose venom harmed its wielder as well as opponents. Each use of soul power drove the poison deeper into her body. Dugu Bo suppressed her condition through his cultivation and medicine, but spent more than ten years without finding a complete cure 21.
Both of her parents died young from the same poisoning. Although her grandfather concealed the seriousness of her condition, she understood that she would likely share their fate and pretended not to know. She kept the illness secret even from Ye Lingling 21 22 24.
Meeting Li Qinglian
Huo Wu sought out Dugu Yan and Ye Lingling at Heaven Dou Royal Academy after Li Qinglian was injured and poisoned in his battle with Tang San. Dugu Yan agreed to help, partly to secure a favor from Huo Wu. Within half a month, she completely purged the poison left by Tang San’s hidden weapons 20 21.
During a later visit, Li Qinglian recognized her own venom backlash and offered treatment in repayment. Initially skeptical, she agreed to let him try and led him to Dugu Bo’s secluded cultivation grounds. Before their arrival, she warned him that her grandfather might kill him if he could not fulfill his promise 21 22.
Li Qinglian’s Green Lotus Sword Intent persuaded Dugu Bo to grant him access to the herb garden. Dugu Yan then learned that Li Qinglian possessed twin martial souls, further strengthening her admiration for him. However, discovering his martial soul fusion bond with Shui Bing’er left her feeling that she could not compete with their connection 23 25.
Treatment and Recovery
After absorbing the Blazing Apricot Delicate Herb and Octagonal Mysterious Ice Grass with Shui Bing’er, Li Qinglian gained blood with powerful detoxifying properties. He added several drops to a broth of nourishing herbs for Dugu Yan. He deliberately divided her treatment into multiple batches to maintain leverage over Dugu Bo 29.
After two months, nearly all of Dugu Yan’s accumulated poison had been cleared. Her eyes changed from green to light purple, and her previously gloomy disposition became noticeably brighter. She still pursued Li Qinglian, but increasingly wanted him to genuinely like her rather than simply taking him from a rival 30.

Following Shui Bing’er’s public kiss with Li Qinglian, Dugu Yan approached Huo Wu about cooperating to retain his attention. She supplied two colored pictures and offered her expertise in removable decorative designs 44.
