Background / History
Tang San first appears in the Hunting Soul Forest alongside Kahn, the dean of Nuoding Junior Soul Master Academy. He witnesses six-year-old Li Qinglian absorb a roughly three-thousand-year soul ring as his second ring, an event that overturns Tang San's confidence in the soul-ring limits taught by Yu Xiaogang. He begins questioning whether those theories can be trusted without reservation. 15 16
When Kahn tries to seize Li Qinglian's suspected External Soul Bone, Tang San waits for Kahn, Li Qinglian, and Huo Wu to exhaust themselves. He then kills Kahn with Sleeve Arrows, intending to take the bone and eliminate the other witnesses. 17
Tang San's attempt fails when Li Qinglian reveals the Green Lotus Sword and defeats his Blue Silver Grass, Tang Sect techniques, hidden weapons, and large-scale assault with the Green Lotus Sword Technique. Tang San is seriously wounded by Thousand Flowers Burying the Moon, but escapes using the Clear Sky Hammer and Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track. 18 19
Four years later, Tang San encounters Li Qinglian again while traveling with Shrek Academy near Star Dou Forest. He openly calls Li Qinglian an “eternal enemy,” still resentful over the External Soul Bone he failed to obtain and the wounds he suffered in their prior battle. 53
Appearance
Tang San is initially described as a plainly dressed youth accompanying Kahn from Nuoding Junior Soul Master Academy. 15
- Wears a Nuoding Junior Soul Master Academy uniform during his first appearance. 15
- His Shrek Academy peers recognize a long-standing scar beneath his ribs from Li Qinglian's sword attack. 53
- His face bears a sword mark from Li Qinglian's Thousand Flowers Burying the Moon. 19
Personality
Tang San is highly intelligent, observant, and calculating. After seeing Li Qinglian exceed conventional soul-ring limits, he immediately reassesses the teachings he had accepted and considers how he himself might have taken greater risks. 16
He is also ruthlessly opportunistic. He ambushes Kahn once the dean is weakened, then attempts to kill Li Qinglian and Huo Wu for the External Soul Bone. Tang San regards this as a necessary move to secure the treasure and remove future threats. 17 18
Despite acknowledging Li Qinglian as an extraordinary genius, Tang San's admiration is inseparable from hostility. His defeat drives him to train the Purple Demon Eye, Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track, and hidden weapons specifically to counter Li Qinglian's swordsmanship. 18 53 55
