Background / History

Yang Lie first appears in the Jade Wutong Immortal Realm as an experienced “old hand” who explains its supposed immortal sanctuary and Seven Immortal Maidens to the newly arrived Hong Yuan. He is knowledgeable but deliberately evasive about the realm’s darker details. 1

He had joined Wu Duxiong, Yang Erhu, and Master Qin in investigating the disappearance of Qin Ziyue. The group traced the case to the Jade Wutong Immortal Realm, where Yang Lie and Master Qin went undercover. Yang Lie entered the manor at least three times to uncover its secrets and was personally selected by Wei Zhenzhu during the operation. 7 9

During the uprising inside the manor, Yang Lie charged the platform with a staff and fought alongside Hong Yuan. After Wu Duxiong and a black-clad ally arrived, the group destroyed the estate and escaped as it burned. 5 6 7 8

Yang Lie is Yang Erhu’s nephew. Yang Erhu and Yang Lie’s father are both blood brothers and martial brothers; Yang Lie’s father became a wealthy household head in the prefectural city, while Yang Erhu operated the Yang Family Martial Arts Hall in Yangquan County. 9 Although Yang Lie received some martial guidance from his father, his father sent him to study under another famous teacher rather than giving him the family’s true transmission, a decision Yang Lie resents. 9 13

After leaving Yangquan County, he traveled the jianghu with Wu Duxiong to temper himself through real combat. 15 Their journey later brought them into an ambush by Wei Zhenzhu’s men, during which Yang Lie entered Force. 37

Yang Lie and Wu Duxiong subsequently joined Crouching Tiger Villa to meet and train with its martial artists. Its master, Song Yinglong, took Yang Lie as a disciple, but Yang Lie later said that Song had forced him into discipleship and restricted both his and Wu Duxiong’s movements. The restrictions and surveillance eventually ended as Hong Yuan’s influence grew. 70 86 140

After Song Yinglong was turned into a Corpse Puppet, Hong Yuan backed Yang Lie’s succession to Crouching Tiger Manor and the Dragon Cavalry Army. Though fond of martial arts, Yang Lie initially lacks sustained discipline. Wu Duxiong bluntly attributes his slow progress to insufficient aptitude and inconsistent effort; Yang Lie himself cannot deny it. 13 Once pressed into lethal combat, however, he fights fiercely and seizes his breakthrough into Force. 37

Hong Yuan’s rapid rise briefly inspires Yang Lie to train obsessively, but he eventually accepts that he cannot match his friend and returns to a more comfortable pace.
