Qin Lan grew up alongside her older brother Qin Yao and grandfather Qin Dashan after losing her parents at a young age. While their grandfather often had to leave to earn a living, she and Qin Yao depended on one another. 115

As a young child, she had already begun helping to support the household by washing clothes, mending garments, sewing, and taking over chores so Qin Yao could focus on his studies. 1 After Qin Yao was framed, stripped of his scholarly honors, and exiled to the Black Iron Mining Area, Qin Lan followed Qin Dashan to the frontier to care for him. She was then frail, underfed, and terrified for her brother's survival. 2

During the family’s impoverished life in Tang Village, she remained conscious of their limited means. When Qin Yao needed food to sustain his martial training, she was willing to pawn her beloved handkerchief, reasoning that he could redeem it once he became successful. 31 She later tells him that simply living as happily as they did on a good day is enough for her, despite his promise to buy her fine clothes, shoes, and candied hawthorn in the future. 37

The villagers eventually spread rumors that Qin Lan was a harbinger of disaster. Qin Yao used this fear to keep the villagers away and facilitate the family’s departure from Tang Village; Qin Lan gradually gained confidence and enjoyed the fear she inspired. 88

She traveled with Qin Yao and Qin Dashan through Snow Pine County, Nine Suns City, the Foreign Repelling Camp, and ultimately the Imperial Capital. Qin Yao later taught her to read and cultivate, and she cared for Hu Xueyou’s stone sculpture as an affectionate “big sister.” 170

Although initially frightened by violence, Qin Lan is resilient. After witnessing Yang Yongchao's death, she comforts Qin Yao by accepting that he killed a wicked man, and later resolves not to be a sheltered “delicate spring flower.” 52 163 She also remains vigilant toward threats to her family, keeping a knife ready when she and Qin Dashan hear suspicious activity outside their residence. 319
