Qin Dashan is Qin Yao's grandfather and Qin Lan's grandfather. Before his recovery, he lived as an ordinary, vulnerable elder despite having once possessed cultivation; his ruined dantian had left him crippled for decades. 320 321 Thirty years earlier, a family mission had severely damaged his dantian and destroyed his cultivation, preventing the promising martial artist from becoming a pillar of the Qin family. 13 321

When the Qin main clan framed Qin Yao for cheating in the county examination and expelled him, Qin Dashan defended his grandson against the patriarch and clan elders despite being kicked aside and dismissed. 1 After Qin Yao was exiled to the Iron Mountain Mining Area, Qin Dashan sold family property, begged for funds, and handed over his coffin savings to Steward Wang Ji in an unsuccessful effort to secure Qin Yao several days of rest before mine work. 10

During the family's time in the Iron Mountain Mining Area, Niu Shiyang bullies him under Manager Wang Ji's protection. The villagers sympathize with Qin Dashan but are too frightened to intervene, deepening Qin Yao's resolve to protect his family. 20

He retains a martial arts manual, Tiger-Fighting Fist, and entrusts it to Qin Yao after Qin Yao reveals the silver he found and his intention to improve their lives. 29 Although initially prepared to instruct his grandson, he is repeatedly astonished by Qin Yao's extraordinary speed of progress. 30 31

Qin Dashan initially believes the invitation is another honor arising from Qin Yao's military service. At the banquet, Diwu Chijin identifies Qin Lan's Celestial Spirit Root and seeks to take her as his personal disciple. When Qin Yao approaches the capital with his victorious army, he cannot find Qin Dashan or Qin Lan among the court gathered to welcome him on the walls. Their absence alarms him, though he does not yet know what has happened to them. 687

Personality

Qin Dashan is kind-hearted and affectionate toward both grandchildren. His vulnerability makes him an easy target for stronger men, but he is neither foolish nor passive: he recognizes danger, worries for Qin Yao's safety, and supports plans he believes are necessary. 20 39 333

He is wise and discreet. When the cultivator grabs Qin Lan's wrist, Qin Dashan intervenes despite the pressure he faces and shields her once she is released. 667 669

Diwu Chijin then proposes taking Qin Lan as his personal disciple. Qin Dashan sees her fear and, rather than refusing outright before the emperor and court, asks for time to persuade her and suggests waiting for Qin Yao's return.
