Background / History

Tien Shinhan first arrived at the Ultra Instinct Dojo with Chiaotzu to challenge its founder, Lin Yuan. Arrogant and contemptuous of the dojo’s students, he easily defeated Nam and injured Sate before demanding that Lin Yuan appear. Lin Yuan defeated him with a single burst of ki, then warned him that his violent mindset and former training path would halt his martial-arts progress. Tien accepted the criticism, apologized, and was invited to return to the dojo for sparring and instruction. 20

In the following days, Tien and Chiaotzu repeatedly attended the dojo, practiced basic exercises alongside the other disciples, and worked to repair their reputation. Lin Yuan formally accepted both of them, placing them within a structured program of combat drills, weighted training, and ki training. 21

Over the next two years, Tien became one of the dojo’s leading fighters. He trained in the Gravity Chamber with Lin Yuan, Goku, Nam, and Chiaotzu, and helped manage the dojo’s training system as its membership grew beyond 130 disciples. 23 24

After joining the dojo, he becomes diligent, receptive to instruction, and committed to rebuilding himself through disciplined training. He is described as a martial-arts fanatic who devotes nearly all his time to cultivation. 21 20

Tien is fiercely loyal to Chiaotzu and his allies. Chiaotzu’s death against Nappa devastates him and drives him into a rage, while his later actions continue to show his willingness to risk himself against enemies beyond his strength. 42 43
