Dugu Yan grew up following her grandfather, Dugu Bo, before entering Heaven Dou Royal Academy. Their family’s inherited Jade Phosphorus Serpent was a top-tier beast martial soul with a fatal flaw: its users could not fully control their own poison, and the backlash worsened as their cultivation increased. By the time she met Huang Long, she and Dugu Bo were the family’s only remaining members 30 34 41.

At the academy, she became vice-captain of the Imperial Fighting Team under captain Yu Tianheng. She practiced coordinated tactics with its main squad and was close friends with the team’s healer, Ye Lingling 30 49.

Meeting Huang Long and Curing the Family Poison

Huang Long sought Dugu Yan because she could lead him to Dugu Bo and, through him, the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well. His claim to be her relative initially angered her, but his knowledge of her grandfather’s condition persuaded her to consider his offer of help. Dugu Yan accompanied her grandfather and Huang Long’s party to the herb garden in Sunset Forest. When Dugu Bo offered to prioritize her treatment over his own, she broke down in tears. Huang Long then explained that several herbs could address their condition, allowing her to take the Earth Dragon Golden Melon while Dugu Bo took the Jade Dragon Snake Orchid 33 34 35.

After her martial soul evolved, its unfamiliar flood-dragon form made both her and Dugu Bo fear that the transformation was incomplete. Huang Long identified it as a sub-dragon rather than a defective evolution, and Dugu Bo acknowledged him as the Dugu family’s benefactor 36 37.

Choosing Huang Long’s Team
