Background / History
Dugu Bo spent his early years traveling Douluo Continent, killing many people through his poison arts and accumulating enemies. Becoming a Titled Douluo deterred those enemies from confronting him, though the narration describes him as the weakest among that rank at his introduction 31.
The Dugu family’s inherited martial soul carried a fatal flaw: its users could not fully control their own poison, and stronger cultivation increased the danger of backlash. By the time Huang Long sought him out, only Dugu Bo and Dugu Yan remained in the family. Dugu Bo suffered itching around his ribs during rain, needle-like pain throughout his body at midnight, and recurring absences lasting several days 30 34.
During these attacks, he stayed near the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well and used its opposing energies to suppress the poison. He maintained a herb garden there but did not recognize the immortal herbs capable of curing him 34 42.
He preferred an independent life and repeatedly rejected recruitment attempts by the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect, Heaven Dou Imperial Family, and Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan. Separately, he promised Prince Xue Xing three services; one remained unfinished when Huang Long first tried to recruit him 32 37 63.
Appearance
- Build: Tall and thin, with a posture likened to a javelin 31.
- Apparent age: Around fifty or sixty when first seen 31.
- Original coloring: Completely green hair and beard, with emerald-like eyes 31.
- After treatment: His hair turns white following his recovery from poisoning 36.
- Voice and expression: Slightly hoarse voice and a blade-sharp gaze 31.
Personality
Dugu Bo is suspicious, proud, and ruthless when he believes his family is threatened. Learning that Huang Long knows the Dugu family’s secret prompts him to test the visitors with poison and demand an explanation under threat of death. Once confronted by superior strength, however, he is willing to negotiate—and asks that his granddaughter be spared even if his own life is taken 31 32.
His affection for Dugu Yan outweighs his interest in personal advancement. When he initially believes only one suitable herb is available, he offers it to her and says he can endure his own condition for a few more years. He later opposes her attempt to absorb a ten-thousand-year fourth soul ring out of concern for the soul shock involved, accepting it only after Huang Long and the other Douluo support the plan 34 45.
Despite his possessiveness toward the immortal herbs, Dugu Bo honors his agreements. He allows Huang Long to select herbs after learning their value, acknowledges the debt owed for the family’s treatment, and joins Huang Long after conceding their wagered duel. His pride also has a comic side: he seeks a sparring match partly to recover his dignity, then ignores Xiao Wu’s complaint when he breaks his promise to yield three moves 35 37 40 41 42.
Abilities & Skills
Jade Phosphorus Snake Emperor
An evolved snake-type martial soul containing a trace of true dragon blood. The Jade Dragon Snake Orchid repairs its inability to control its own venom without requiring Dugu Bo to abandon his poison-based cultivation 34 36.
- Martial Soul Possession: Manifests the Snake Emperor’s power; after treatment, its scales have a metallic luster 40.
- Martial Soul Avatar: Transforms him into a jade-green serpent over thirty meters long and as thick as a water vat 41.
- Combat limit shown: While suppressing himself to the Soul Sage realm, his Avatar is shattered by Huang Long’s Dragon Spear. He subsequently admits that he cannot defeat Huang Long without using his full strength 41 42.
Poison Arts
Dugu Bo states that he has cultivated his poison art for forty or fifty years. His venom is substantially stronger than Dugu Yan’s poison and can corrode furniture or blacken vegetation 31 41.
| Soul skill / Technique | Effect | Demonstrated limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Second Soul Skill: Jade Phosphorus Snake Venom | A giant snake-head phantom releases dense, dark-green poison mist 41. | Huang Long blocks the mist with a wind wall 41. |
| Fourth Soul Skill: Jade Phosphorus Shield | Forms a coiling Snake Emperor phantom around him for protection 41. | Huang Long’s Geng Metal Dragon Claw shatters it 41. |
| Poison arrows | Condenses poisonous mist into projectiles to intercept incoming attacks 41. | Huang Long’s ice-coated water arrows survive the exchange 41. |
| Sixth soul skill | Transforms poison mist into a giant serpent that charges its target 41. | An earth wall stops its charge, though the impact also destroys the wall 41. |
- Poison resistance preparations: Supplies potions that allow companions to pass through the poisonous mist guarding his valley 33.
- Not absolute against stronger opponents: Sea Dragon Douluo disperses his initial poison attack with a single punch, without releasing his martial soul 31.
- Former self-poisoning: Before treatment, his own venom caused chronic backlash; afterward, he can control it 30 36.
Dan Pearl and Soul Core Potential
Dugu Bo possesses a Dan Pearl that formed inadvertently when his martial soul evolved into the Jade Phosphorus Snake Emperor. Half of his strength is embodied in it, and Huang Long’s group identifies it as an embryonic Soul Core 44.
- Sea Dragon Douluo teaches him the Soul Core condensation method after he joins the group 44.
- Fully converting the pearl into a Soul Core is described as capable of increasing his strength severalfold 44.
- The provided passages do not confirm that he completes the conversion.
Cultivation Assessment and Soul Beast Capture
- Examines Dugu Yan’s pulse and soul power to assess her physical strength after consuming Whale Rubber 45.
- Recognizes the danger of a ten-thousand-year soul ring’s soul shock and prepares to interrupt an unsafe absorption 45 46.
- Captures an exactly ten-thousand-year-old Black-Scaled Flood Python with true dragon blood for Dugu Yan’s fourth ring 46.

- Courtyard near the well — Located roughly three or four hundred meters from the spring, with cooking utensils and food supplies for extended stays 42 43.

- Sea Dragon Douluo — Initially overpowers his poison and deters him from threatening Huang Long; later teaches him Soul Core condensation and works alongside him on academy preparations 31 32 44 63.
- Sea Maiden Douluo — Helps restrain his initial hostility, challenges his underestimation of Huang Long, and participates in his later cultivation discussions 31 40 42 44.
- Prince Xue Xing — Recipient of Dugu Bo’s promise to perform three services. The remaining service complicates his initial response to Huang Long’s recruitment offer 37.
- Chrysanthemum Douluo — His sworn enemy in Spirit Hall; Dugu Bo compares Sea Maiden Douluo’s aura to this rival’s 32.
- Xiao Wu — Learns that she is a hundred-thousand-year soul beast. Her warning about Di Tian, reinforced by Huang Long, prompts him to awkwardly dismiss the idea of seeking her ring or bone 35.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Negotiation and Cure
Huang Long approaches Dugu Yan with precise knowledge of her grandfather’s symptoms. Dugu Bo responds by visiting the group’s hotel at night and probing its strength with poison. After Sea Dragon and Sea Maiden Douluo reveal their power, he agrees to discuss treatment and opens his herb garden to the group 30 31 32.
At the well, Huang Long identifies several remedies. Dugu Bo refuses a method that would strip away his poison-based cultivation, then chooses the Jade Dragon Snake Orchid while Dugu Yan takes the Earth Dragon Golden Melon. His cure turns his hostility into gratitude, and he recognizes Huang Long as the Dugu family’s benefactor 34 35 36 37.
Sparring Wager and Recruitment
After witnessing Huang Long’s martial soul evolution, Dugu Bo challenges him to a sparring match. The wager requires Dugu Bo to join the group if Huang Long wins; a Dugu Bo victory would earn him the undisclosed cultivation method. He fights with his power restricted to the Soul Sage realm 39 40.
Their final clash initially appears even, but Dugu Bo’s Martial Soul Avatar is broken while Huang Long remains uninjured. After learning that Huang Long still has unused trump cards, Dugu Bo concedes and keeps his promise to join. He then learns that the group comes from Sea God Island and that Huang Long is the Sea God Douluo’s disciple and future successor 41 42.
Supporting Huang Long’s Group
Dugu Bo receives instruction in Soul Core condensation, supports Dugu Yan’s cultivation, and captures the soul beast for her ten-thousand-year fourth ring. When her absorption becomes dangerous, he prepares to intervene; Huang Long’s blood instead stabilizes her, prompting another expression of gratitude 44 45 46 47.
He also assists with establishing Huang Long’s advanced Soul Master Academy. Alongside Sea Dragon and Sea Maiden Douluo, he reports on a proposed site near Sunset Forest, chosen for convenient access to the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well 44 63.
