This made Peter realize a fact.
No matter how strong he became, he was still just the little brother in this family!
And his cousin was the towering mountain he would never be able to surpass!
But Peter did not dislike the feeling of having an insurmountable mountain ahead of him. On the contrary, he rather enjoyed it.
Since he could not climb over it, he might as well turn around and lean against the mountain to rest!
After all, having a mountain to shield you from wind and rain was not a bad thing, was it?
And if you did make it over, the other side might just be a bottomless abyss!
Having regained his senses, Peter became curious about the source of his abilities.
And because of Toby's similarly superhuman performance earlier, a thought suddenly struck Peter, and he guessed:
"I know, Toby. Our ancestral bloodline awakened, right? Our family actually has some hidden talent passed down from ancient ancestors, and we just happened to awaken it. Am I right?"
"Right... right up your uncle's stinky shoe!"
Toby reached out again and flicked two fingers against Peter's forehead. "I told you not to watch so much Japanese anime. Ancestral bloodline awakening? We're in America, not Neon. What kind of ancestral bloodline could possibly awaken here?"
"The ancestral bloodline of someone who specialized in repairing cotton gins?"
After lecturing the chuunibyo Peter, Toby walked over to a wall and pressed his hand against it.
With a beep, the wall split down the middle, revealing another entrance leading downward.
Peter stared blankly.
A basement beneath the basement?
How had he not known his house had a place like this?
When had Toby dug it?
But Toby clearly had no intention of explaining such a boring question to Peter. He had already started walking down on his own.
Peter could only suppress his doubts for the time being and follow him down.
And what lay below was even more extraordinary.
Unlike the gym upstairs, this was a laboratory no less impressive than Dr. Connors's, filled with all kinds of valuable research equipment.
But Peter did not look at those expensive research instruments first. Instead, he stared fixedly at a glass display wall showcasing suit after suit of armor!
Peter unconsciously walked up to the display wall and reached out, running his hand across the glass from left to right over each suit.
They were, in order:
The first was a ruthless criminal's outfit consisting of a simple black robber's ski mask, black sunglasses, a dark red hoodie, black cargo pants, and black boots.
This was what Toby had thrown together when he first "debuted," used to conceal his identity and prevent it from being exposed, lest those outlaws in Hell's Kitchen retaliate against him.
The second was a major upgrade. Not only had it gone from a hodgepodge of clothes to a pure black one-piece skintight combat suit, but the material had also been greatly upgraded from ordinary fabric to elastic spandex fiber.
This was the first true combat suit Toby had made himself after officially becoming an underground mercenary assassin, using materials bought with the money Kingpin had laundered for him.
The third was the suit Toby was currently using—the black-and-red suit he had worn when he wiped out the Neon Gang last time.
This one was no longer homemade. He had found someone in the underground world to custom-make it.
Not only was its craftsmanship far more professional than his homemade suits.
Its materials had also received another major upgrade over the second version, using composite ballistic nylon capable of resisting the penetration of small-caliber firearms.
Its color scheme had also changed from the second version's plain black. Aside from the head, shoulders, and gloves, which remained black, every other part had been changed to scarlet, with a black spider emblem on the chest representing his identity!
Its functions had also been greatly upgraded. Besides the bulletproof capabilities of the material itself, the suit was waterproof, insulating, self-drying, capable of enhancing physical sensation and adjusting temperature, and even had thermal imaging in the eyes.
Though it was not as good as the nano spider suit Tony Stark would create later on, it could still be called a genuine high-tech combat suit!
And this suit alone had cost Toby nearly ten million dollars!
If those functions had not truly been worth the price, Toby would have wanted to crush the underground designer's head when he heard the quote!
The guy made money faster than Toby did by robbing criminals, for fuck's sake!
And it was still something money alone could not buy!
That designer only customized combat suits for assassins who had made a name for themselves. Ordinary assassins were not even qualified to meet him, let alone commission a suit from him!
If Toby had not already earned the title of "Poison Spider" in the assassin world, and if Kingpin had not introduced him as an intermediary, the designer would not have made one for him even if he had ten million!
That was also why Toby worked so hard to take on jobs and make money, and why he maintained a good relationship with Kingpin despite knowing that Kingpin was not a good person.
Because sometimes, without money and connections, you really could not get anything done...
And when Peter's gaze landed on the fourth suit on the display wall—the final suit—he could no longer look away.
It was a red-and-blue suit, largely similar in design to the third suit, yet with subtle differences.
For example, aside from the spider emblem on its chest, the third suit did not actually have any other patterns.
But this red-and-blue suit had added many web-like pattern designs across its upper body in addition to the spider emblem on its chest!
And in terms of color, unlike the third suit's combination of black and scarlet, which looked both heroic and villainous at a glance, this one also had red—but it was a comfortable, vivid red, paired with blue, a color rarely used by villains.
It looked downright righteous!
And beyond that, the biggest difference was that compared to the first three suits, this one was clearly more than a size smaller!
There was no way this was a suit Toby's two-meter-tall, muscular build could wear. It looked more like...
Peter suddenly turned to Toby, his breathing growing a little hurried as he asked, "Toby, could this be...?"
Toby had been leaning against the wall, quietly watching Peter inspect the suits one by one. Only when Peter reached the fourth suit and asked him did he use his palm print to open its glass display case, smiling as he said, "What are you standing there dumbfounded for? You don't seriously think I could wear this suit, do you? My size isn't as small as yours~"
At that, even as Peter felt moved, black lines appeared across his forehead.
Jokes were jokes, but don't joke about someone's size!
His wasn't small, alright?!
But then Peter remembered the time he and his cousin had competed over who could pee farther as children—his cousin's high-pressure water cannon—and fell silent again.
Oh no. He seemed to have run into an argument he couldn't refute!
