Peter's parents died in a plane crash when he was young, after which he became the permanent ward of Ben and May Parker. He grew up alongside his cousin Toby; by the time Peter was eighteen, the two regarded one another as real brothers after eight years under the same roof. Peter remained grateful to Toby, Ben, and May for supporting him through his loss. 4 9

Unlike Toby, Peter was initially an ordinary person. Toby arranged for him to be bitten by a Super Spider during the fire at Osborn Tower, then secretly supervised his transformation rather than taking him to a hospital. Peter later deduced that Toby had planned both the fire and the bite. 13 18
