He had just confirmed it in the surveillance room. Thankfully, his fifty-million-dollar prize was still alive.
So he was in quite a good mood right now.
It had been almost exactly five days since he set out. Fifty million in five days—he could be considered someone who earned ten million a day!
Meanwhile, Tony and Yinsen had no idea that their savior had already arrived.
Even though night had fallen, the two of them, unable to tell day from night inside the cave, were still diligently modifying their go-down-together incendiary bomb.
It was not until someone knocked on the iron door that the two, immersed in their work and oblivious to time, finally stopped and exchanged looks.
Tony: "Is it already the second day?"
Yinsen: "I don't know either..."
Tony: "Go say something, anything, and stall them. I'm almost done modifying the incendiary bomb!"
Yinsen: ...
"Damn it!"
Yinsen cursed under his breath. With no choice, he grabbed a wrench and forced himself to walk up to the iron door.
"N-No one's home!"
Toby, outside the door: ...
"Open up. I'm here to rescue you."
Yinsen froze at those words, then peered outside through the iron door's only window.
And that one look immediately revealed Toby, wearing a black hood with scarlet-red eyes.
It scared Yinsen so badly that he stumbled back two steps.
Yeah, right. What kind of decent person came to rescue someone dressed like that?
So Yinsen hid beside the door and shouted, "I don't believe you!"
Toby, who did not have much patience to begin with, completely lost it upon hearing that.
After taking two steps back, he delivered a straight kick to the iron door!
Under Toby's nearly hundred-ton kick, the iron door flew away with a thunderous boom before embedding itself deep in the wall.
Thankfully, Yinsen had hidden against the wall beside the door because he was afraid the person outside would see the guilt on his face. Otherwise, he would probably have become an iron-door-and-wall sandwich by now.
Yinsen had clearly not expected Toby to break in this way. He stood there blankly with his wrench, watching Toby enter.
Toby was first-rate when it came to killing people, but comforting them? Forget it.
So after patting Yinsen on the shoulder, Toby walked toward Tony, who was still facing away from him and busily working on something despite all the commotion.
As Toby approached Tony and was about to pat him on the shoulder, his spider-sense suddenly went off!
And the source of the danger warning was Tony himself!
Realizing something was wrong, Toby no longer cared whether Tony was worth fifty million. He kicked Tony in the waist, sending him flying!
Once Tony was no longer blocking his view, Toby finally saw that there was a bomb on the table as large as a basketball!
And Tony was just one final step away from installing the trigger and setting it off!
Holy shit, was this guy planning to blow up the entire cave with a bomb that big?
Just as Toby was stunned by the bomb's size, a faint spider-sense warning came from behind him.
This time, without even turning around, Toby caught the wrench that was swinging toward the back of his head. He yanked on it and flung Yinsen, who had tried to ambush him from behind, straight over to Tony, who was clutching his stomach and nearly out of breath.
After hitting the ground, Yinsen saw that although Tony's face was flushed red, he was at least still breathing, and he could not help letting out a sigh of relief.
"Oh, thank God, Tony. I thought that guy had embedded you into the wall like our iron door!"
Tony, in too much pain to speak: ?
Who did you say got embedded in a wall?
Tony had been in the final stages of emergency assembly, so focused that he had shut out all outside distractions. He had no idea what had happened behind him.
All he wanted was to finish assembling the incendiary bomb immediately, then take a bunch of those damned terrorists down with him!
But just as he was about to finish the final step, someone kicked him in the kidney and sent him flying three meters away, leaving him in so much pain that he could not speak...
And that was with Toby holding back.
Otherwise, Tony would already have ended up embedded in the wall alongside the iron door, just as Yinsen had said.
Seeing that Tony and Yinsen had both been physically calmed down, Toby walked over, held out his hand to them, and said, "Gentlemen, I really am here to rescue you. So please don't overreact, lest I react in kind and injure you again, okay?"
Tony, finally able to catch his breath, tugged at the corner of his mouth. "You're here to rescue us? Then why didn't you say so earlier..."
Toby shrugged. "I said so from the start, but that bald guy didn't believe me."
Hearing that, Tony looked at Yinsen in surprise.
His expression seemed to say, We're already in this situation. Why didn't you believe him?
Yinsen felt wronged too. Pointing at the hood over Toby's face that made him look anything but decent, he said, "You can't blame me for that. What decent person dresses like him and wears a mask to hide his face...?"
Tony laughed at that and reached out to pat Yinsen on the shoulder.
"Yinsen, you're behind the times. This kind of so-called superhero is popular in America these days. Most of them are like this guy—covering their faces while going around doing good deeds..."
Yinsen froze, then asked in surprise, "So people wearing masks aren't just terrorists and robbers now? There are superheroes too?"
You really did live to see it all...
Seeing the two of them actually start chatting, Toby could not help interrupting them.
"Alright, you two. There'll be plenty of time to chat in the car. How about we get out of this damned place first?"
Tony and Yinsen loved the sound of that. They immediately shut up and nodded furiously at Toby.
Now that he understood he had misunderstood Toby earlier, Yinsen no longer held any hostility toward him. He took Toby's outstretched hand and used it to pull himself to his feet.
Tony, however, did not take Toby's other hand. Instead, he endured the pain in his side and braced himself against the wall as he got up on his own.
After pushing himself upright against the wall, Tony did not forget to explain himself to Toby.
"Don't misunderstand, buddy. It's not that I have a problem with you. I just don't like physical contact with strangers. It's a quirk, you know..."
Toby could not help teasing him.
"A quirk? I'm guessing that little quirk of yours about not liking contact with people disappears automatically when you meet a beautiful woman. In fact, you probably want to get even closer than that, right?"
Tony did not deny it. He merely winked with a roguish smile. "Who wouldn't?"
Women and alcohol had always been the best tools for bringing men closer together.
So, after exchanging a few words about women, Tony's instinctive wariness toward Toby lessened considerably. Smiling, he asked, "By the way, buddy, who sent you to rescue me? The military, or Stark Industries?"
Toby slowly shook his head. "Neither. Your personal assistant, Ms. Pepper Potts. She spent all her savings to hire me to rescue you, you wayward prodigal..."
Tony instantly froze upon hearing that, standing there for a long while without coming back to himself.
He had never expected that, in the moment when he needed help the most, the one who brought him light would not be the company he had painstakingly built, nor the military that had landed him in this predicament, but merely his personal assistant.
After a long while, a sincere, warm smile finally appeared on Tony's lips. "Spending your life savings on a man whose fate is unknown... You're so foolish, Little Pepper..."
"But I won't let you waste that money. Once I'm back, I'll repay you tenfold, a hundredfold!"
Tenfold? A hundredfold?
Wouldn't that be five hundred million? Five billion?
There was such a good deal?
Hearing Tony's words, Toby could not help cutting in.
"Since you mentioned compensating Ms. Pepper Potts, let me add something. You're worth far more than fifty million. Ms. Pepper Potts also said when she hired me that if you were still alive, you'd have to pay me an additional reward."
Tony gave a confident smile. "Five hundred million for you too!"
Behind the mask, Toby sucked in a sharp breath.
Five hundred million?
At fifty million, you were just one of my mission targets. At five hundred million, you're my uncle!
