Background & History

Tony was held captive by the Ten Rings alongside Dr. Yinsen, where he constructed the prototype Iron Man armor and relied on an Arc Reactor in his chest to survive. Toby Parker rescued both men, charging Tony five hundred million dollars; Tony insisted on taking the prototype armor’s components home with him. He recognized Toby as the young genius praised by The New York Times. 35 36

After returning to the United States, Tony learned that Stark Industries missiles had destroyed Yinsen’s home and killed his family. Yinsen’s belief that Tony should use his intellect to change the world gave Tony a new sense of responsibility and solidified his decision to become Iron Man. 38

Tony contracted Toby to capture Obadiah Stane alive so that he could confront him personally. He uncovered Obadiah’s weapons dealings, role in arranging Tony’s kidnapping, and involvement in leaking Howard Stark’s security route before Howard and Maria Stark’s deaths.
