Appearance
Kakashi commonly wears a mask and keeps his left eye concealed beneath his forehead protector; that eye is a Three-Tomoe Sharingan. He carries a short blade on his back and is frequently seen reading Icha Icha Paradise. 7 8 87
- Left Three-Tomoe Sharingan, usually covered by his forehead protector 8
- Ninja pouch, kunai, and a short blade 7 8 87
- Often reads Icha Icha Paradise, even while awaiting students or resting between missions 7 10
Personality
Kakashi is habitually late and initially presents himself as relaxed, detached, and easily distracted by Icha Icha Paradise. His tardiness is notable enough that Team 7 begins arriving late in response to his own habits. 6 7 18
Despite this casual exterior, he becomes serious when missions endanger his students. During the A-rank operation against Ishikawa Kazuo, he insists that Team 7 follow his commands and admits that Qin Yu's strength is the main reason he accepted the risk of bringing the team along. 11
He is pragmatic in battle, relying on observation, predictive use of the Sharingan, coordinated techniques, and summoned tracking hounds. He also recognizes when opponents exceed him, though this can leave him frustrated. 87 88 91
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan
Kakashi possesses a Three-Tomoe Sharingan, the source of his “Copy Ninja” reputation. It enhances his perception, allows him to anticipate attacks, and enables him to copy techniques. 8 87
- Revealed it during his spar with Uchiha Qin Yu after being forced to take the fight seriously. 8
- Predicted Mirai's incoming Fire Release during a later spar and copied Lightning Wave. 87
- Its predictive ability helped Kakashi and Naruto create a countermeasure against Majestic Destroyer Flame. 88
- Uses the space-time technique Kamui, which can draw attacks into a separate dimension; Mirai used knowledge of this ability to deduce Obito's identity. 263
- Can be neutralized by techniques designed to deny Sharingan vision, such as Bringer-of-Darkness Technique. 88
Lightning Release
Kakashi's signature offensive technique is Chidori, a lightning blade formed in his hand. 8
- Used Chidori to escape Qin Yu's Twin Dragon Fire. 8
- Killed Kihara Village chief Xiong Jing by piercing his chest with Chidori, though he sustained a shoulder wound in the exchange. 18
- Wounded the One-Tail Shukaku with Chidori while evading falling debris. 35
- Employs Lightning Release in combination techniques, including Hurricane Water Vortex Technique with Naruto. 87
- His Chidori was completely blocked by Mirai's Lightning Wave during their spar. 87
Water and Earth Release
Kakashi uses defensive and offensive Water and Earth Release techniques with rapid hand seals. 8
- Water Release: Water Wall — blocked Qin Yu's Great Fireball Jutsu. 8
- Earth Release: Earth Flow Wall — paired with Water Wall to defend against Great Dragon Flame Bullet Barrage. 8
- Water Release: Breaking Torrent — combined with Naruto's Rasengan to create Hurricane Water Vortex Technique. 87
Summoning Technique
Kakashi can summon the ninja hound Pakkun for reconnaissance and tracking. 14 91
- Sent Pakkun to scout Kihara Village before Team 7 entered. 14
- Used Pakkun again to carry instructions and a marked map location during the pursuit of Akatsuki. 91
Swordsmanship and Throwing Skills
As the son of Konoha's White Fang, Kakashi is skilled with a blade and makes effective use of kunai. 87
- Pressured Qin Yu with a coordinated kunai assault during the bell test. 8
- Drew the short blade from his back during a spar against Mirai, but was disarmed. 87
Equipment
- Forehead protector — conceals his Sharingan when lowered. 8
- Short blade — carried on his back for close combat. 87
- Kunai — used for direct attacks and tactical pressure. 8
- Ninja pouch — carries equipment, including Icha Icha Paradise. 7 8
- Icha Icha Paradise — his preferred reading material. 7 10
Relationships
- Uchiha Qin Yu / Uchiha Mirai — His exceptionally powerful student and later squad leader. Kakashi lost the bell test spar to Qin Yu, relied on his strength during the Kihara Village mission, and later acknowledged Mirai as a dangerous opponent even in a three-on-one spar. 9 11 87
- Uzumaki Naruto — Student on Team 7. Kakashi works with Naruto to create Hurricane Water Vortex Technique and tries to restrain his impulsiveness in battle. 7 87
- Uchiha Sasuke — Student on Team 7. Kakashi's Sharingan surprises Sasuke, who questions how a non-Uchiha possesses it. 6 8
- Haruno Sakura — Student on Team 7. She participates in the bell test and later fights alongside Kakashi during missions. 7 18
- Hiruzen Sarutobi — The Third Hokage who discusses Qin Yu's threat level and role in the Chunin Exams with Kakashi. 9 10
- Jiraiya — Fellow Konoha shinobi and ally during the Shukaku crisis; Jiraiya recognizes the Flying Thunder God Formula on Kakashi's kunai. 35 36
- Might Guy — Close companion who teases Kakashi about being surpassed by Mirai. 85
- Pakkun — Summoned ninja hound used for scouting and delivering instructions. 14 91
Story Role / Major Arcs
Team 7 Formation and Bell Test
Kakashi is assigned as the leader of the unusual four-person Team 7: Naruto, Sasuke, Sakura, and Qin Yu. He arrives late to their first meeting, distributes their headbands, and sets a bell-snatching exercise as their opening lesson. 6 7
Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura fail to take the bells, while Qin Yu challenges Kakashi directly. Forced to reveal his Sharingan and use Chidori, Kakashi is ultimately outmaneuvered by Qin Yu's Rasengan and loses a bell. 8 9
Kihara Village A-Rank Mission
After Team 7 accepts an A-rank mission without his approval, Kakashi is initially furious because failure would damage his 99.5% mission success rate. He nevertheless leads the team to capture the rogue jonin Ishikawa Kazuo in Kihara Village. 11
Kakashi investigates the village's epidemic, learns that Ishikawa and Chief Xiong Jing conducted human experiments, and participates in the assault on the village. He kills Xiong Jing with Chidori but is wounded in the process, then leads the team's withdrawal with Ishikawa's body. 15 16 18
Defense of Konoha
During the One-Tail Shukaku's attack on Konoha, Kakashi uses Chidori to wound the tailed beast and helps coordinate the defense. 35
He recognizes that Qin Yu entered the Four Violet Flames Formation through advanced space-time ninjutsu. After finding a Flying Thunder God Formula on his kunai, Kakashi realizes Qin Yu can use the Flying Thunder God Technique. 36
Mirai's Squad
Kakashi later spars alongside Naruto and Sakura against Mirai. He combines Water Release with Naruto's Rasengan to create Hurricane Water Vortex Technique, but Mirai blocks their efforts while holding back most of his strength. 87 88
When Tsunade forms a new four-person squad consisting of Mirai, Naruto, Sakura, and Kakashi, command is awarded to Mirai after Kakashi's side loses a rock-paper-scissors contest. 89
Akatsuki Pursuit
Kakashi leads a team including Mirai, Naruto, Sakura, and Temari toward Akatsuki's base to rescue Gaara. He summons Pakkun to relay reconnaissance instructions before the group advances. 91 92
During the conflict with Sasori, Kakashi and Gaara barely destroy the Third Kazekage puppet. Kakashi is unable to use Kamui against Sasori's core because Iron Sand continually blocks his line of sight. 114
Trivia
- Kakashi's mission success rate was stated to be 99.5% before Team 7 accepted the Ishikawa Kazuo mission on his behalf. 11
- He is called the “king of lateness” by Team 7 due to his habitual tardiness. 18
- Kakashi's habit of reading Icha Icha Paradise is influential enough that Jiraiya can sway him by promising new editions. 89
