Chapter 1: Mo

In year forty-six of the Hidden Leaf calendar, Sasori of the Red Sand assassinated the Third Kazekage and defected, leaving Sunagakure leaderless and mired in severe internal strife. They still believed that the Kazekage hailed as the strongest had merely gone missing, and searched the entire Ninja World for traces of their leader.

Those with keen instincts had begun to sense that the Third Shinobi World War might soon erupt.

Based on this premonition, the Third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi, issued an S-rank mission-to determine whether the Third Kazekage really had gone missing. Besides gathering intelligence before the war, it would also serve as Kakashi's assessment for promotion to Jonin.

Red Child fusion rate: 7.02% (Reach 10% to unlock Innate Divine Strength)

Ultimate mission: Raise this world's safety and stability above 90%, transforming it into a world suitable for human habitation.

Reward: Fuse with the Seven-Colored Lotus and gain eternal life and the ability to travel between worlds.

Uchiha Mo gazed into empty space at a panel only he could see, a gift from the Seven-Colored Lotus-the very thing responsible for bringing him to this world.

Although all he had was this solitary panel, after ten years of studying it, Uchiha Mo had more or less figured out everything it contained.

Beyond the self-explanatory information, there were two main ways to increase these fusion rates: improve his mastery of the corresponding chakra nature, or kill powerful opponents proficient in that nature.

For example, Big Brother corresponded to Yang Release, so he needed to kill experts in Yang Release or improve his proficiency through training. In addition, through experimentation and estimation, he had roughly worked out the other unlocking requirements.

Orange Child corresponded to Yin Release, Third Brother to Yang Release and Earth Release, Fourth Child to Fire Release and Lightning Release, Fifth Child to Water Release, Sixth Child to Yin Release and Wind Release, and the seventh child to the space-time attribute, which lay outside the chakra natures.

"Mo, break's over. We should keep moving."

The white-haired boy, whose hair had yet to become brushlike, leaped down from a branch and stood before Uchiha Mo with a cool expression.

Uchiha Mo turned his head slightly and glanced at Kakashi without speaking, then silently rose to his feet.

Kakashi was one of the few ninja in the original story who possessed all five elemental releases. Known as the Copy Ninja, he was proficient in almost every release technique and particularly skilled in Lightning Release and Earth Release. But the current Kakashi was still in the cold-blooded phase following his father's death. His strength was growing rapidly, and the fruit was still far from ripe for picking.

"Let's go."

Mo spoke softly, rested a hand on the Ninja Blade at his waist, and took the lead.

There were four of them on this mission: a Jonin leading three team members. Besides Kakashi and Uchiha Mo, there was their Jonin leader, Matsumoto Ryohei, a character who had never appeared in the original story and was probably cannon fodder for the Third Shinobi World War. Their remaining teammate was a civilian who had only recently graduated from the Ninja Academy, most likely another casualty on Kakashi's path to completing his mission.

"We'll reach the border between the Land of Rain and the Land of Wind up ahead. We can ask around in the villages for information. Unless absolutely necessary, we should avoid infiltrating the Land of Wind. That could easily spark a political dispute."

Matsumoto Ryohei looked back at them as he spoke, still moving at high speed.

The group advanced in silence. Uchiha Mo's pupils contracted slightly, and his vision instantly pierced layer upon layer of obstructions, reaching a distant village. This was the power of Clairvoyance.

A short while later, his eyes returned to normal, and an almost imperceptible smile curved his lips.

They followed the border between the Land of Rain and the Land of Wind in search of people. Before long, the sharp clang of clashing weapons drifted faintly toward them.

Matsumoto Ryohei stopped abruptly and raised a hand, whispering, "Something's happening. Take cover!"

As his words fell, three figures vanished from their positions. Inoue Shoji was half a beat slower, ducking behind a tree.

About a hundred meters directly ahead stood a small village.

In front of it, three figures in plain black robes were fighting a group of armed men.

The men varied greatly in build, wore headscarves of the same color, and fought without any technique. They looked like a band of bandits.

"Konan, Nagato! Don't kill them. Just subdue them!"

The orange-haired man spoke as he sidestepped a long blade swinging down from behind him, then struck his enemy's neck with a knife-hand blow. The man instantly collapsed.

Both answered loudly, but their companions were not the only ones who could hear his words.

A bandit beside the man adopted a vicious expression upon hearing this. He lunged forward and slashed diagonally with his long blade.

The man easily sidestepped it, but in the next instant, his pupils sharply contracted.

Beneath the blade lay the bandit he had just knocked unconscious!

There was no time to think. Almost instinctively, he kicked at the flat of the bandit's blade-but at the same time, another steel blade came down toward his back!

"Yahiko!"

At the critical moment, the red-haired man called Nagato roared and raised his hand, unleashing a terrifying suction force!

The bandit behind Yahiko flew away, his body completely beyond his control and his steel blade slipping from his hand. Yahiko escaped danger, but blood burst from Nagato's arm.

In the grove, Uchiha Mo narrowed his eyes slightly and stepped forward. A branch immediately cracked beneath him.

Kakashi turned toward him at once and lowered his voice. "What are you doing?"

Mo slowly drew the gleaming blade at his waist.

"Killing."

Kakashi frowned slightly. "Don't do anything unrelated to the mission."

"Don't tell me what to do."

Before his words had faded, Uchiha Mo vanished from the spot.

"Tch!"

Kakashi stared at Uchiha Mo's retreating back in displeasure. His right hand closed around the sword hilt behind him, then slowly loosened.

"What a troublesome teammate. Why can't all the Uchiha be a little more well-behaved, like that idiot Obito?"

"He seems cold, but he's actually a kindhearted boy. Isn't that a good thing?"

Matsumoto Ryohei spoke with a smile, having clearly noticed their exchange.

But he was mistaken. Uchiha Mo hadn't decided to help out of kindness or goodwill.

In less than half a minute, Nagato looked this way five times. He's a sensory ninja, so he's most likely already detected us. And judging by his behavior, he can already use some basic Rinnegan abilities. If small fry can still injure him under these circumstances, he's clearly keeping his guard up against us.

Chapter 2: The Akatsuki Yet to Be Born

Of all the chakra natures, Yin-Yang Release was clearly the hardest to improve, while the Rinnegan was a highway leading straight to its pinnacle.

That made Nagato vitally important to Uchiha Mo. Since they had been discovered, Mo decided to introduce himself ahead of schedule.

The instant his chakra flared, Nagato's purple pupils contracted sharply. A powerful repulsive force erupted around him, throwing back every enemy as he shouted:

"Yahiko, Konan! Watch out! A powerful chakra is approaching!"

Before his words had faded, a streak of fire burst onto the battlefield!

Uchiha Mo wore a high-collared black robe with a conspicuous Uchiha Crest emblazoned on its back. He flitted through the bandits like a butterfly. Wherever his blade passed, severed limbs and blood flew, only to be scorched dry by the flames an instant later.

In just a few breaths, more than half the bandits on the battlefield had fallen.

Nagato had raised his right hand slightly. Seeing that the newcomer bore them no ill will, he gradually lowered it again, though his gaze still flicked toward Uchiha Mo from time to time. Yahiko belatedly caught on and shouted with a frown:

"Please show mercy! These are just ordinary people driven to this by hardship!"

Uchiha Mo ignored him. His blade swept across, sending two terrified heads soaring high. Following through, he turned and delivered a side kick that sent a bandit attempting a sneak attack flying.

Less than ten seconds after Uchiha Mo joined the fight, fewer than ten bandits remained. Their fighting spirit had long since crumbled. Staring at him in terror, they dropped their weapons with trembling hands, turned, and fled!

Mo glanced at them but did not pursue. He flicked the blood from his blade and slowly sheathed it.

Nearby, Konan hurried over to examine the wound on Nagato's arm, while Yahiko strode up to Uchiha Mo. He let out a long sigh and said:

"Thank you for coming to our aid..."

Before he could finish, two figures appeared beside Uchiha Mo.

Startled, Yahiko swept his gaze over them and only then began studying the people before him.

The Body Flicker Technique, Hidden Leaf Forehead Protectors...

Nagato rose warily, holding the bandage on his arm as he approached and came to a stop beside Yahiko.

"May I ask your names?" Yahiko raised a hand, his expression gentle.

Although Uchiha Mo had ignored his plea and killed many of the bandits, he had still done so to help them. Yahiko was not so foolishly kind that he would overlook that.

Uchiha Mo glanced at Nagato before nodding to Yahiko.

"Uchiha Mo. Let's skip the pleasantries. If you want to thank me, tell me whether any Sunagakure ninja have been active near the border lately."

Inoue Shoji finally arrived, but no one paid him any attention. Yahiko rested a hand on his chin and fell into thought. Seeing this, Nagato volunteered:

"Around this morning, three ninja wearing Sunagakure Forehead Protectors passed through here, heading toward Grass Country. Come to think of it, Sunagakure seems to be doing something lately. Large numbers of ninja have been leaving, causing unrest along the border. There are far more bandits now, too. That's why we came here."

As soon as he finished, Uchiha Mo rested a hand on his Ninja Blade and turned to leave. Kakashi and the other two paused, then hurried after him.

So it was just for mission intelligence? Kakashi glanced at the boy's profile beside him, feeling inexplicably disappointed.

The image of Nagato getting wounded to save his companion suddenly surfaced in his mind...
