Personality

Following Sakumo Hatake’s death, Kakashi becomes emotionally cold and treats shinobi as machines meant to complete missions; in this period, he dismisses comrades and bonds as tools and jokes. History

Third Kazekage Investigation

Hiruzen assigns Kakashi to an S-rank investigation into the Third Kazekage’s disappearance, using the mission to evaluate him for promotion. He travels with Uchiha Mo, Matsumoto Ryohei, and Inoue Shoji toward the Land of Rain and the Land of Wind. 1

During the ambush on three Sunagakure shinobi, Kakashi confronts Baki despite recognizing the gap between them. He initially orders Mo to capture an enemy and withdraw while he holds Baki back, but Baki overwhelms him with Poison Mist and Wind Blades. Mo saves Kakashi at the last moment, while Matsumoto and Shoji are killed. 2

Kakashi obeys Mo’s order to retreat with the surviving Sand shinobi, imprisons the captive with Earth Release, then returns after Mo’s words about strength, missions, and difficult choices unsettle him. 2 3

Conflict with Mo and Promotion

After Mo kills Baki, Kakashi challenges him over Sakumo’s legacy and attacks with an incomplete Chidori. Mo defeats him easily, criticizing him for allowing grief and anger to make him reckless. 3 4

Mo’s harsh assessment of Sakumo forces Kakashi to reconsider the belief that either missions or comrades are objectively more important. Kakashi thanks him and resolves to establish his own ninja way. On their return, he gives Mo his Chidori research scroll. 4

Team 7 and the Third Shinobi World War

After graduation, Kakashi joins Team 7 alongside Obito Uchiha and Rin Nohara under Minato Namikaze. He later operates beside Team 8 under Mo’s battlefield command. 7 29

During the Hidden Cloud campaign, Kakashi consults Mo about Chidori’s flaw and accepts his advice to reduce its speed and momentum. He also entrusts Mo with elite opponents such as Toroi, recognizing the overwhelming gap between Mo’s strength and his own. 29 30

Loss, Land of Snow, and Mo’s Defection

After Obito and Rin’s deaths, Kakashi struggles with grief and accepts Hiruzen’s ten-day protection mission for Princess Kazahana Koyuki as an opportunity to avoid returning immediately to war. 71

The mission becomes a flight from the Land of Snow’s rebellion. Injured while protecting Koyuki from Chakra Armor-equipped pursuers, Kakashi is relieved when Mo arrives and takes control of the confrontation. 72

Mo later reveals that he has defected from Konoha and gives Kakashi an ultimatum: join the Uchiha, lose his Sharingan and memories, or fight and die. Overwhelmed by grief, Kakashi briefly begs Mo to kill him, but agrees to continue the mission after Mo heals his wound with Yin-Yang Release. 73

After Koyuki and Sōsetsu are rescued, Kakashi chooses to accompany Mo in the hope of persuading him to return to Konoha. Mo rejects the idea that they are friends. 74

Altered Memories and the Stolen Eye

Mo later incapacitates Kakashi, seals his recent memories, and secretly removes Obito’s Kamui Sharingan for the Uchiha Clan. 75

At Obito’s memorial, Kakashi asks to care for Obito’s grandmother and is publicly permitted to retain Obito’s Sharingan as inheritance. In reality, the genuine eye is already in Mo’s possession. 85 98
