Founding and Uchiha marginalization

Hidden Leaf was founded when the Uchiha and Senju clans ended the Warring States Era and helped establish the modern ninja-world order. Despite this founding role, the Uchiha later became increasingly excluded from meaningful village power. 48

During the Third Shinobi World War, Hiruzen repeatedly relied on the Uchiha’s military strength while limiting their political gains. After the Battle of Kikyo Mountain, where the clan suffered substantial casualties, Hiruzen expanded the Uchiha Police Force rather than granting the influence Fugaku expected. 46 47

Hiruzen later excluded Uchiha Mo from consideration for Fourth Hokage despite publicly acknowledging his exceptional war record, then named him a Hokage Advisor and Elder—an appointment the Uchiha regarded as a means of containing their clan head. 84 85

Third Shinobi World War

Hidden Leaf fought on several fronts against Hidden Cloud, Hidden Sand, Hidden Stone, and Kirigakure. Its forces included Minato’s special-action unit, Orochimaru’s troops, and Uchiha units led by Mo. 28 42 49

Hiruzen appointed the Uchiha clan head as commander of the force sent to defend the Land of Whirlpools from Kirigakure. Mo used the deployment to strengthen the clan’s autonomy rather than simply serve village interests. 49 56

The village ultimately emerged as the apparent victor of the war, but its treatment of the Uchiha deepened the clan’s alienation. 83 84

Uchiha departure

Under Mo’s leadership, the Uchiha established a new stronghold in the Land of Demons rather than openly revolt immediately. The clan gradually transferred most of its population from Hidden Leaf, with roughly eighty percent relocated by Hidden Leaf Year 51. 60 90

The Land of Demons offered the Uchiha greater autonomy, improved living conditions, Land of Snow energy technology, and a settlement designed around the clan rather than a Hokage-centered government. 69 90 97

Nine-Tails crisis and collapse

During the Nine-Tails crisis, Uchiha forces exploited Hidden Leaf’s chaos to raid its secret facilities. They seized ninjutsu, sealing techniques, ninja tools, the Raijin Sword, the Uzumaki legacy, and treasury assets; the Hokage Office Building was burned. 92 93 95

Mo killed Hiruzen, while Minato and Might Duy also died during the wider disaster. The Uchiha then departed for their new settlement, declaring it their true home. 93 95 96

Hidden Leaf lost nearly thirty percent of its shinobi and civilian population, including more than fifty jonin. Its standing fell from the Ninja World’s strongest village to below the other major powers. 96

Government and Institutions

• Hokage Office Building — The village’s central administrative headquarters; burned during the Uchiha raid. 93
• Uchiha Military Police Force — Formerly a major Uchiha institution within the village. Hiruzen expanded it after the Battle of Kikyo Mountain, a concession that did not grant the clan broader political authority. 46
• Ninjutsu archives and secret vaults — Held the village’s stored techniques, ninja tools, treasury, and Uzumaki sealing inheritance before being looted or destroyed by the Uchiha. 92 96
• Sensory barriers — Hidden Leaf maintained village-scale detection measures, though Mo’s Heavenly Narrow Mist later allowed him to bypass them undetected. 83

Relations

• Uchiha Clan — Founding clan turned political rival. The Uchiha increasingly viewed Hidden Leaf as exploiting their military value while denying them equivalent authority; their eventual secession devastated the village’s strength and resources. 48 56 90 96
• Hidden Cloud — A principal enemy during the Third Shinobi World War. After the Uchiha defection, Cloud approved Hidden Leaf’s joint wanted notice against Mo. 28 97
• Hidden Sand — Fought Hidden Leaf at Kikyo Mountain, where Chiyo, Ebizo, and the elite puppet corps suffered major losses. Sand later joined the wanted notice against Mo. 42 46 97
• Hidden Stone — A wartime opponent that celebrated Hidden Leaf’s later collapse and rejected Orochimaru’s request for a joint manhunt against Mo. 96
• Kirigakure — Invaded through the Land of Whirlpools during the war and later demanded the return of the Seven Ninja Swords. It refused to join the wanted notice against Mo. 49 66 97
• Akatsuki — Mo joined Akatsuki after leaving Hidden Leaf, making the organization an additional concern for the already weakened village. 76 90

Aftermath

• Orochimaru retained control of Hidden Leaf because rebuilding a new power base would have been more difficult than restoring the damaged village. 96
• The village urgently needed Jiraiya’s anti-Tailed-Beast sealing knowledge and Tsunade’s political influence to stabilize its recovery. 96 101
• Hidden Leaf issued a joint wanted notice against Mo with Hidden Cloud and Hidden Sand, designating him an S-rank rogue ninja. 97
