Background / History

Richard is the son of Queen Adora of Xandar. When Thanos destroyed the planet and its Nova Corps, Adora sent him away with Worldmind, a supercomputer containing Xandarian records and stored Nova Corps consciousnesses. Richard swore to avenge Xandar and set out to seek help from Asgard 184 205 234.

An attack destroyed his starfighter and wounded his soul. Worldmind merged with him, producing the Nova Force, though Richard initially understood his new mental abilities only as something like a computer in his brain. Star-Lord and Groot found him drifting unconscious in space and took him aboard. A second attack caused their ship to crash on Kampa Star, where Peter Parker and his allies found them 203 205 206 234.

On Earth, Richard asked to become Peter’s disciple. Peter refused the formal arrangement but took him under his wing. Tony Stark arranged an Earth identity for Richard, Happy Hogan became his legal guardian, and Richard enrolled at Midtown High. Inspired by Peter’s street-level heroism, he joined the Spider Squad and chose the name Nova to carry on the Corps’ mission of protection 207 208.

While investigating a disguised alien, Nova uncovered Skrulls operating on Earth. They incapacitated him, but Worldmind took control of his body and killed his attackers. Richard then encountered Worldmind within his “Nova Space” and rejected its attempts to control him or dictate how the Corps should be rebuilt. He later remained outwardly unconscious while training there, helping Stark conceal the Avengers’ knowledge of the Skrulls 231 232 234 286.

Peter’s later investigation found that Thanos had influenced Worldmind, pushing it to urge Richard to rebuild the Nova Corps on Earth and turn the planet into a new Xandar. With Richard’s consent, Peter and his allies removed Worldmind’s radical personality and reworked it into the Nova System, a program intended to help Richard grow through tests and rewards 447 448.
