Background

Around 700 years before the Infinity War, Titan faced ecological collapse amid overpopulation and food shortages. Thanos proposed killing half of all life to preserve the remainder; his father, A'lars, deemed him insane and banished him. Titan later succumbed to ecological disasters, cementing Thanos's belief that mass death was necessary for “balance.” 186

He formed the Black Order and gathered followers known as the Children of Thanos. The Order devastated civilizations across the universe, while Thanos employed the Chitauri as mercenaries, using their campaigns to extract resources, technology, and worlds for his larger cause. 170

Earth had drawn his attention since the 2012 Battle of New York, when Loki led the Chitauri invasion with the Mind Stone Scepter. Thanos initially concealed his involvement, relying on agents such as Loki, Ronan, and Sakaaran mercenaries to recover Infinity Stones without exposing his goal. 170 185

After Odin's death, Asgard's destruction, and the disappearance of the Collector, Thanos abandoned this restrained approach. Personality

Thanos is ruthless, patient, and convinced that genocide is a rational solution to universal scarcity. He frames the elimination of half of all life as a necessary sacrifice rather than an act of cruelty, even after Titan's fall demonstrates the consequences of unchecked population growth. 177 186
