Background
Around 700 years before the Infinity War, Titan faced ecological collapse amid overpopulation and food shortages. Thanos proposed killing half of all life to preserve the remainder; his father, A'lars, deemed him insane and banished him. Titan later succumbed to ecological disasters, cementing Thanos's belief that mass death was necessary for “balance.” 186
He formed the Black Order and gathered followers known as the Children of Thanos. The Order devastated civilizations across the universe, while Thanos employed the Chitauri as mercenaries, using their campaigns to extract resources, technology, and worlds for his larger cause. 170
Earth had drawn his attention since the 2012 Battle of New York, when Loki led the Chitauri invasion with the Mind Stone Scepter. Thanos initially concealed his involvement, relying on agents such as Loki, Ronan, and Sakaaran mercenaries to recover Infinity Stones without exposing his goal. 170 185
After Odin's death, Asgard's destruction, and the disappearance of the Collector, Thanos abandoned this restrained approach. He deployed his full military force, having already located five of the six Infinity Stones and concluded that Gamora had found the Soul Stone but severed contact with him. 185
Appearance
Thanos is a massive, purple-skinned Titan whose immense physical presence is emphasized by his oversized hands and towering stature. During the Infinity War, he wears the Infinity Gauntlet on his left hand and often travels on a hovering throne. 184 185 192
- Purple skin. 192
- Massive physique and hands. 184 200
- Infinity Gauntlet worn on the left hand. 184
- Associated with a hovering throne and the Sanctuary II warship. 185 191
Personality
Thanos is ruthless, patient, and convinced that genocide is a rational solution to universal scarcity. He frames the elimination of half of all life as a necessary sacrifice rather than an act of cruelty, even after Titan's fall demonstrates the consequences of unchecked population growth. 177 186
He treats hatred and rebellion from his followers as proof of their worth. Gamora, Nebula, Ebony Maw, Proxima Midnight, Corvus Glaive, and Cull Obsidian were all regarded as his “children,” regardless of their hostility toward him. 185
Despite his brutality, Thanos can recognize defiance in an opponent. During his battle with Tony Stark, he expressed admiration for Stark's spirit before severely wounding him. 198

He moved against the Asgardian refugees to claim the Space Stone, but Doctor Strange's forces lured him into an ambush on Kampa Star. Thanos fought Peter Parker, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, and Loki simultaneously, overpowering them through his own strength and the two Stones. 191 192 196

Alternate Thanos: Earth-199999S
In Earth-199999S, Thanos successfully collected all six Infinity Stones and snapped away more than half of life. He later destroyed the Stones' physical forms and retired to Titan, where Peter Stark and Shuri killed him; his death did not reverse the snap. 340 341
Past Thanos of Earth-199999B
A past Thanos learned of the Avengers' time-travel operation through captured Nebula. After seeing that his original snap would be undone, he abandoned his half-life doctrine and resolved to reduce the entire universe to atomic dust before creating a new universe free of grief and resistance. 446
He defeated the Avengers, seized a completed Infinity Gauntlet, and departed Earth with the stated goal of ending the multiverse itself. 446 447
Black-Clad Thanos / Black Emperor
The Black-Clad Thanos, also called the Black Emperor, leads the Multiversal Dark Order. He collects Infinity Stones and Infinity Gems from parallel universes, seeking to forge a Primal Infinity Stone—the foundation of the Multiverse. 455
