Background / History
Stephen Strange was once an exceptionally skilled and wealthy neurosurgeon. A car accident severely damaged the nerves in his hands, ending his ability to use a scalpel. Desperate for treatment, he traveled to Kamar-Taj and became a disciple of the Ancient One. Her training exposed him to extradimensional energy, astral projection, dimensional travel, and magical constructs; being stranded on Mount Everest finally forced him to abandon his rigid materialist worldview and embrace magic. 83
As guardian of the New York Sanctum Sanctorum, Strange and Karl Mordo confronted Kaecilius and his Zealots after they destroyed the London Sanctum and attempted to destroy New York's. Strange initially trapped Kaecilius in the Mirror Dimension, but Dark Dimension power allowed Kaecilius to seize control of it and overpower both sorcerers. 81 82
After the Ancient One's death, Kaecilius completed the ritual to bring Dormammu into reality through the Hong Kong Sanctum. Strange used the Time Stone to create a time loop and repeatedly faced death at Dormammu's hands until Dormammu agreed to leave the real dimension with Kaecilius and his followers. 112
Strange later became one of Peter Parker's most trusted mystical allies. He taught Peter Astral Projection, verified the reliability of Peter's Spider-Sense, warned him about the Quantum Realm and multiversal interference, and shared his knowledge of the Infinity Stones and the Sacred Timeline. 112 113 272 274
When multiversal instability increased, Strange proposed forming the Super Avengers and selected Peter, Tony Stark, Professor Hulk, Thor, Steve Rogers, T'Challa, and Scott Lang as its initial members. He later founded the Strange Association, linking Sorcerers Supreme from several universes to exchange magical knowledge and monitor interdimensional threats. 273 449
Appearance
Strange is a tall, thin, middle-aged man with a short stubbly beard. He wears a conspicuous red cloak and sorcerer's attire that contrasts with modern New York clothing. 80
- Red cloak that moves dramatically while he casts spells. 113
- Short, stubbly beard. 80
- Often carries the Eye of Agamotto around his neck. 113
- Uses a distinctive circular hand motion when opening portals or forming magical constructs. 112 448
Personality
Strange is serious about the dangers of magic and carries the responsibilities of the Sorcerer Supreme with considerable weight. He is willing to confront catastrophic threats personally, as shown by his repeated deaths in the Dark Dimension to force Dormammu's retreat. 112
His scientific past remains an important part of him. Peter's claim that mathematics can counter magic briefly destabilizes Strange's worldview, since Strange had deliberately rejected physics and mathematics during his early magical training. He later continues to argue with Peter that not every spell can be understood through material-world science. 83 169
Despite his sternness and frequent exasperation with Peter's casual requests for portals, Strange consistently aids him, respects his Spider-Sense, and treats him with increasing concern as he learns how young Peter truly is. 112 224 271
Abilities & Skills
Mystic Sorcery
Strange draws upon extradimensional energy to cast offensive, defensive, and utility spells.
- Creates magical weapons, shields, and bindings. 83 199
- Restrains enemies with Magic Light Whips, including Thanos. 199
- Easily subdued Ava Starr with magic while intervening in the Quantum Realm incident. 274
- Can sustain shields against barrages of energy fire in space. 319
- His magic depends on external mystical power; in Earth-2149, where Vishanti is absent, he must expend his own energy and risks overload. 311 313
Portals and Dimensional Manipulation
Strange can manipulate space for transport, concealment, and battlefield control.
- Opens portals for rapid travel across Earth and into outer space. 112 175 448
- Uses Phase Shift to relocate targets over short distances. 112
- Creates and manipulates the Mirror Dimension, including redirecting a Dark Order landing pod away from its target. 82 279
- Brought Peter to an extradimensional space independent of the multiverse to discuss the Sacred Timeline. 271
- Cannot freely interfere with parallel universes; sorcerers are bound by a code against casually opening portals to other realities. 272
Astral Projection and Dreamwalking
Strange can separate consciousness from the body and act through astral forms.
- Appeared in Peter's room as a transparent astral projection and demonstrated that a body can move autonomously while its consciousness is displaced. 85
- Taught Peter Astral Projection after recognizing the accuracy of his precognitive Spider-Sense. 112 114
- Used Dreamwalking to enter the body of Earth-2149's elderly Strange and assist Peter against the Zombie Sentry crisis. 310
Eye of Agamotto and the Time Stone
The Eye of Agamotto contains the Time Stone, which Strange uses to control time and perceive possible futures.
- Created the time loop that forced Dormammu and Kaecilius to withdraw. 112
- Can rewind the past and glimpse the future. 113
- Viewed a future crisis involving the Infinity Stones and explained the six Stones to Peter. 113
- Saw 14,000,605 outcomes of the Infinity War, with only one recorded victory in the Sacred Timeline. 272
- The Time Stone becomes inert outside its native universe, as seen on Earth-2149. 295
Multiversal Knowledge and Coordination
Strange monitors threats that cross universal boundaries and recognizes the risks of timeline disruption.
- Detected that an unknown traveler had entered his universe by sensing disturbances in its barrier. 270
- Explained the Sacred Timeline and the former role of the Time Variance Authority in constraining parallel-universe divergence. 271
- Warned that Peter's actions had made the future increasingly unpredictable and could precede a multiversal war. 272
- Formed the Strange Association with Time Stone-bearing counterparts to share intelligence and watch for interdimensional invaders. 449

Alternate Versions
Earth-2149 Strange
Earth-2149's Strange is an elderly, gaunt, mentally unstable Sorcerer Supreme whose Sanctum is small and dilapidated. Mention of the Ancient One causes him to become delirious and attack Peter. 303 304
His world has lost Vishanti and is isolated from the Mirror Dimension, leaving its sorcerers unable to borrow normal white-magic power. During the Zombie Sentry crisis, he reaches overload while maintaining magic through his own dwindling energy. 311 313
Black Strange
Black Strange originated on Earth-TRN881, where Christine Palmer died in a car crash while Strange survived with his hands intact. Unable to accept her death, he pursued time manipulation and forbidden dark magic to overturn her death, an absolute temporal point. 385
The Ancient One split him into Good Strange, who relinquished his obsession, and Evil Strange, who consumed mystical creatures for power. Evil Strange eventually absorbed Good Strange, becoming Black Strange; his attempt to restore Christine caused his universe to disintegrate. 386
Black Strange later entered Peter's universe seeking help for Earth-TRN889. He agreed to protect Earth-199999 from dimensional threats in return for Peter's future aid, but gradually became increasingly paranoid and corrupted by Darkforce. 411 412 459
By the time he allied with King Loki, Doctor Doom, and Thousand-Hand Reed, Black Strange had slaughtered and devoured the gods of the Dark Dimension, sealing the Dark Dimension within his eyes and creating the Eyes of Darkness. 463
Blood Strange
Blood Strange is a version of Stephen Strange from a universe devastated after its Infinity Stone was lost through the Avengers' time-travel actions. His Ancient One sacrificed herself, staining him with her spiritual blood and establishing a passage through which he could continuously draw on the Dark Dimension. 446
Although he prevented his Earth from being consumed, prolonged dark-magic exposure distorted his mind. Blaming the Avengers for his universe's ruin, he tracked their reality down and killed Tony Stark, Pepper Potts, and numerous Avengers. 446
