Background / History

Berg was the captain of the Collection Pirates, a crew named for his obsession with collecting rare items. His collection contained at least 1,000 objects, including treasures, curios, and unusual creatures, but explicitly excluded humans. He dressed in aristocratic fashion and was later revealed to be a former noble of the Folo Kingdom in West Blue. 40 43 44 137

Before meeting Reg, Berg had led his crew from the West Blue through dangerous seas using exceptional navigational ability. His rapier technique was fast enough to dazzle opponents, and his bounty had recently entered the 100 million Beli range. 40

Near Jaya Island, the Collection Pirates attempted to seize Reg's specialized sailboat. Berg initially offered Reg “VIP treatment” in exchange for the ship, but Reg ambushed the crew, defeated Berg decisively, and took control of the situation. 40 41

Reg spared Berg and his surviving crew in return for navigation assistance toward the Knock Up Stream. Berg accepted because Reg threatened him with his knowledge of Observation Haki and because Berg wished to protect his collection. 42

Over more than six months of studying Jaya's waters and surviving encounters with pirates and Sea Kings, Berg and Reg developed mutual respect. Berg helped turn Reg from a novice into an experienced navigator, while Reg repeatedly protected the weakened Collection Pirates. 43

Before Reg attempted the Knock Up Stream, Berg offered his gold-rimmed monocle as a pledge: if Reg survived, Berg would serve him regardless of Reg's future identity. He ultimately remained with his crew during the ascent attempt, then set course for Drum Kingdom after witnessing Reg reach the White Sea. 44 47

Berg was born Fidel Berg, a member of the noble Fidel Family that governed Fidel Town near the Folo Kingdom's royal capital. Two years before revealing his history to Reg, the Capone Family attacked Fidel Town while expanding its influence. Berg was the only member of his family to escape; the Folo Kingdom's royal family subsequently stripped him of his noble status and attempted to hand him over to the Capone Family. He escaped, recovered hidden family treasures, and fled the kingdom. 137

After arriving in Drum Kingdom, Berg established a large pawnshop in Panshp and used its branches, trade networks, and Devil Fruit purchasing policy to expand Reg's financial and intelligence reach. He later joined the Kingdom of Zh's government as its Minister of Finance and also served in foreign-affairs duties. 136 138 257 269 272

Reg entrusted Berg with the Art-Art Fruit and 950 million Beli so that he could become strong enough to settle his personal vendetta. Five years after returning to his homeland, Berg infiltrated Capone Castle and systematically eliminated the Capone Family members responsible for the destruction of Fidel Town, including Jonathan Capone and Capone Bege, before reclaiming his family's assets. 137 464 469 470 471

Appearance

Berg initially presented himself like an aristocratic merchant, but months of harsh work around Jaya Island changed him into a more rugged pirate captain. 40 43

  • Black tailcoat and black hat during his first encounter with Reg. 40
  • Pince-nez monocle worn over his right eye; later described as gold-rimmed. 40 44
  • Two upturned mustaches. 40
  • Initially appeared physically frail despite his combat ability. 40
  • After six months, had bronzed skin, ordinary long-sleeved clothing, black trousers, and a fiercer appearance. 43
  • By his time in Panshp, his skin had become fairer again and he appeared noticeably younger than during the Jaya expedition. 136
  • Later wears formal ministerial attire, with neatly combed short hair, a clean-shaven face, a high nose bridge, and broad cheekbones that reinforce his imposing, aristocratic bearing. 510 630

Personality

Berg is shrewd, cautious, and calculating. When Reg reveals skills associated with the World Government's agents, Berg quickly infers that Reg may be a P Organization defector and decides cooperation is safer than open resistance. 42

His collection is his greatest weakness and the possession he values most. This attachment initially compels his cooperation with Reg, but it also serves as the basis for his pledge of loyalty when he entrusts Reg with his monocle. 42 44

Despite being a pirate who has raided towns and killed, Berg is not portrayed as bloodthirsty. He is orderly, educated, and capable of managing people; Reg specifically considers using his managerial talent in future plans. 44

Berg's loyalty to Reg grows into wholehearted devotion after Reg reveals himself as the Thunder God Boy and offers support for the Fidel Family's revenge. He regards Reg as the person who gave him power, wealth, status, and the opportunity to personally avenge his family. 137 509

Although normally refined and pragmatic, Berg can become ruthless when confronting those responsible for Fidel Town's destruction. During his revenge campaign, he kills methodically and without mercy, though Reg's intervention prevents him from indiscriminately slaughtering uninvolved people in a blood-fueled rage. 464 468 469

Berg retains a personal moral boundary regarding his Devil Fruit: while he can turn living beings into artworks, he understands Reg's prohibition against treating transformed humans as collectibles. 139

He is also capable of treating subordinates with genuine respect. His compassionate offer of employment to Gin, whom he found as a thief from Goa Kingdom's Gray Terminal, earned Gin's gratitude and enduring loyalty. 222

Abilities & Skills

Berg is an outstanding navigator whose experience allows his crew to escape dangerous weather and maritime disasters.

  • Executes upwind tacking to pursue Reg's ship while sailing against the wind. 40
  • Spent over six months investigating currents around Jaya Island with Reg. 43
  • Confidently led his ship into the Knock Up Stream's danger zone to improve Reg's chance of ascent. 47
  • Helped Reg develop from a novice navigator into an experienced one. 43

Rapier Swordsmanship

Berg fights with a slender rapier and relies on speed.

  • His rapier is described as swift enough to dazzle the eye. 40
  • Used a technique called “Lightning”, a silver, lightning-fast thrust aimed at Reg's heart. 41
  • Could react to Reg's initial assault and evade a direct thrust, but was ultimately overwhelmed by Reg's Six Powers and Observation Haki. 40 41
  • Can create multiple mist-formed rapier projections with “Phantom Swords” to attack several targets at once. 469
  • Continues to use his rapier in combination with his Art-Art Fruit, though highly skilled swordsmen such as Amande can pressure him in direct blade exchanges. 470 632

Art-Art Fruit

Berg possesses the Art-Art Fruit, which allows him to release a nearly transparent mist that transforms objects, weapons, and living beings into artistic creations. 137 138

  • Can reshape and recolor inanimate objects without changing their underlying material, such as transforming a ceramic cup into a decorative bowl. 138
  • Can transform living creatures into art pieces. A transformed fish retained normal life functions, but its life aura disappeared and it assimilated into the water after the artwork was disrupted. 139
  • Uses “Art: Processing” to transform incoming ammunition and weapons into harmless toys or decorative objects. 470
  • Uses “Life Art: Bestowal” to temporarily grant life to transformed creations and command them. 470
  • Uses “Life Art: Construct World” to turn an area into an artwork-based constructed world, trapping targets within a painted trial. 471
  • Developed “Illusion Door,” a short-range movement technique that creates a temporary artistic passage for evading fatal attacks. 632
  • Developed “Illusory Refraction,” which leaves behind a realistic artistic duplicate while moving his real body away; the technique consumes considerable mental energy. 632
  • Can use “Toy Solidification” to transform opponents into dolls. His prolonged artistic influence on an enemy weapon can eventually transform its wielder alongside it, allowing him to bypass conventional Armament Haki resistance. 633

Haki

Berg possesses Observation Haki and has learned basic applications of Armament Haki, though he has not mastered Armament Hardening. 464

  • His knowledge of Observation Haki and the Six Powers allowed him to identify Reg as someone connected to the World Government's intelligence apparatus shortly after their first battle. 42
  • Uses Observation Haki and basic Armament Haki applications alongside his Devil Fruit abilities and Black Ops support during high-risk operations. 464
  • Cannot yet perform Armament Hardening. 464

Leadership and Management

Berg can direct a pirate crew efficiently and maintain composure in perilous conditions.

  • His crew immediately returned to their posts when he began pursuing Reg's ship. 40
  • Retained several elite crew members after losses sustained during the six-month search for the Knock Up Stream. 43
  • Reg recognizes his managerial potential and assigns him the task of establishing influence and gathering intelligence in Drum Kingdom. 44 45 46
  • Founded and managed a large pawnshop in Panshp, later expanding its business model toward a worldwide network that purchased Devil Fruits at prices above the black-market rate. 136 138
  • Swindled the king of Goa Kingdom out of one billion Beli by selling ordinary items transformed into convincing artworks. 222
  • Serves the Kingdom of Zh as Minister of Finance and undertakes foreign-affairs work, including negotiations with the Marines, World Government representatives, and Morgans. 229 269 272
  • Oversaw preparations for Berg's own revenge operation and commanded six elite Black Ops agents assigned to identify targets and protect uninvolved civilians. 464

Equipment / Items

  • Gold-rimmed monocle — Berg's most important possession; offered to Reg as collateral for his pledge of loyalty. 44
  • Rapier — His primary weapon. 40 41
  • Collection — More than 1,000 rare treasures, trinkets, and unusual creatures. 40
  • Gold pocket watch — A personal item bearing a crystal pattern associated with the Kingdom of Zh and Berg's status within it. 470

Relationships

  • Reg — Initially attempted to steal Reg's ship; after defeat and six months of cooperation, pledged loyalty to him and accepted an assignment to Drum Kingdom. Reg later revealed his identity as the Thunder God Boy, entrusted Berg with the Art-Art Fruit and funds for revenge, and personally accompanied him to West Blue to settle the Capone Family matter. 40 41 42 43 44 45 46 47 137 464
  • Fitch — First mate of the Collection Pirates; surrendered to save Berg's life after Reg defeated him. Fitch was originally a slave purchased by Berg after Berg escaped the Folo Kingdom, and Berg considers him completely trustworthy. 41 137
  • Collection Pirates — Berg's original crew. Their numbers dwindled during the search for the Knock Up Stream, leaving a smaller group of elites. 40 43
  • Gin — A former thief from Goa Kingdom whom Berg hired after recognizing his gratitude and character. Gin became fiercely loyal to Berg and later joined Reg's Black Ops force. 222 225
  • Custard — A daughter of Big Mom with whom Berg develops mutual feelings amid the political marriage negotiations between Totto Land and the Kingdom of Zh. During the war against Big Mom, Berg prioritizes Custard's safety and convinces her to leave the battlefield after she reveals her pregnancy. 509 510 633
  • Capone Family — The criminal family responsible for the destruction of Fidel Town and the death of Berg's family. Berg ultimately exterminated the principal members of the faction, including Jonathan Capone and Capone Bege. 137 469 470 471
  • Amande — Custard's elder sister and an enemy swordswoman during the war against Big Mom. Berg saved Ohm from her, later fought her himself, and transformed her into a toy doll rather than allowing her to die. 630 632 633
  • Morgans — The president of the World Economy News Paper, who relentlessly questioned Berg for political intelligence and personal gossip about Reg and the Kingdom of Zh. 272

  • Berg's real name, Fidel Berg, reflects his origin in the Fidel Family of Fidel Town. 137
  • His Art-Art Fruit abilities complement his collector's mentality, but Reg explicitly forbids him from turning people into artworks for collection purposes. 139
