History

Duen is a transmigrator who had lived in the world for seventeen years by the time his system awakened. Koushirou brought him to One-Heart Dojo as an infant, where Duen grew up training and acting as the eldest disciple’s responsible senior brother. Although he worked diligently at basic sword practice, Koushirou considered him poorly gifted in swordsmanship and accepted Duen’s former wish to live quietly rather than seek a swordsman’s summit. 1 2

At dawn in Chapter 1, Duen discovered the Emotion System in his mind. He quickly realized that provoking negative feelings directed at him generated points for the system’s lottery and upgrades. His early experiments included disciplining junior disciples, pranking Zoro over his sense of direction, and testing who could yield the most points. 1 2 10

The lottery changed his prospects. After several worthless results, he received an Incomplete Nightmare Fruit and later enhanced his swordsmanship, transforming his formerly mediocre combat ability. He defeated Zoro in a formal spar, prompting Koushirou to recognize his sudden growth. 3 6 7

Daniel, a Goa Kingdom noble, hired Duen as a guard for his luxury cruise ship. Koushirou supported Duen’s decision to go to sea and entrusted him with a 22-kilogram broad blade for strength training. During a pirate attack, Duen protected the ship’s passengers, killed the invading pirates, and turned in captain Arnold’s head for a seven-million-Beli reward. 7 8 12

After catching Nami attempting to steal that reward, Duen drew her into a card-game arrangement rather than simply expelling her. They subsequently traveled together through the Goa Kingdom, where Duen aided Simon against men sent by noble Bernal Joshua. He infiltrated High Town, assassinated Joshua, and manipulated Outlook Stelly into becoming a witness who would shape the narrative around the murder. 13 22 24

Duen later defeated Rom—revealed to be Bluejam—while protecting Nami from his armed gang. In Foosha Village, he befriended Ace and Luffy through sparring and cooking, repeatedly defeating both while studying the practical limits of Phantom Mirror. 26 33 34 36

After leaving Foosha Village with Nami, Duen began operating as a bounty hunter. He infiltrated the Black Cat Pirates’ ship, defeated Kuro and his crew, and delivered them to the Marines at Shells Town for a thirty-five-million-Beli bounty certificate. 44 45 47

Appearance

Duen is a youthful, handsome young man with a resolute appearance. When departing One-Heart Dojo, he tied back his normally loose short black hair, leaving strands at his temples, and carried Koushirou’s oversized broad blade across his back. 8

  • Short black hair, sometimes tied into a bundle. 8
  • Usually carries a broad, heavy-bladed sword rather than a conventional katana. 8
  • Uses disguises when necessary, including Buggy’s red nose, white gloves, and a mask while infiltrating High Town. 22 23

Personality

Duen is patient but firm in his role as a senior brother. He understands his younger disciples’ dislike of rigid training, yet insists that they obey rules they lack the strength to overturn. He also accepts responsibility for his mistakes, apologizing to neighbors after provoking them despite having gained substantial Negative Emotion Points. 1 5

He is highly mischievous and deliberately provocative, often teasing people to study the Emotion System or collect points. His targets include Zoro, Fullbody, Nami, Ace, Luffy, Sanji, and information broker Jordan. He is perceptive about emotional reactions and recognizes that people with greater importance to the world, such as Zoro, Ace, and Luffy, generate far more points. 2 10 32 38 49

Duen remains remarkably calm in danger and does not fear killing. He describes violence as emotionally ordinary to him, yet is not driven by bloodlust; his personal sense of right and wrong still motivates him to protect Simon, assist Nami, and eliminate threats he considers intolerable. 12 22 26

He can be unexpectedly considerate. He cooks for Nami, buys her clothes, comforts her when she is troubled, and ultimately trusts her enough to place his life in her hands as navigator. 17 20 31 41

Abilities & Skills

Emotion System

Duen possesses a mental interface containing Abilities and Enhancement, Lottery Center, and Illustrated Guide functions. 1

  • Gains Negative Emotion Points only when another person’s negative feelings are directed toward him. 10
  • Spends 200 Negative Emotion Points per standard lottery draw. 2
  • Can use points to enhance eligible skills, though advancement requirements rise sharply. 6 42
  • Identified diminishing returns: repeated exposure causes targets, including Nami, to become less reactive to his provocations. 17
  • Uses the Illustrated Guide to register certain lottery items and unlock achievements. 3 30

Swordsmanship

Duen’s primary discipline is one-sword swordsmanship, enhanced directly by the system alongside his physical attributes. His fighting style combines a heavy broad blade with speed, precise timing, and sudden changes in grip or body position. 6 7

  • Defeated Zoro shortly after enhancing Swordsmanship, despite Zoro’s established combat talent. 6 7
  • Routinely conditions himself through extensive sword swings, including two thousand repetitions aboard Daniel’s ship. 9
  • Uses One-Sword Style: Leopard Walk, a high-speed forward charge and slash. 26
  • Uses One-Sword Style: Wolf Drive, a two-handed finishing slash used to kill Bluejam. 26
  • His broad blade can block bullets and multiple swords, but it can be dented and damaged by gunfire. 25 26 27

Nightmare (Fragment)

Duen possesses a fragment of the Paramecia-class Nightmare Fruit. He commands two crimson entities known as Nightmares, which act as the medium for his Devil Fruit abilities. 6

  • Can summon and retract the two Nightmares at will. 6
  • The Nightmares can attach to tangible objects, especially his broad blade, to transmit Phantom Mirror. 6 33
  • Their brightness and effectiveness decline with repeated use, then recover with rest. 6 34
  • The fragment gives him only a portion of the Fruit’s total potential. 6 36

Phantom Mirror

Phantom Mirror uses the target’s fear and Duen’s intimidation to create nightmare-like illusions, temporarily disrupting bodily control. 6

  • Requires visual transmission through the target’s eyes to invade their mind. 26
  • Can affect multiple living targets at once; Duen controlled six armed men simultaneously, though dividing the effect weakened it. 26
  • Victims describe spinning, kaleidoscope-like patterns and indistinct visions. 34
  • Can be used for interrogation, as Duen did against Simon’s attacker. 22
  • Does not inflict direct physical damage. 36
  • Strong-willed opponents such as Ace and Luffy can break free in less than a second. 34

Geppo

Geppo allows Duen to step on air and maneuver above the ground or sea. 15 16

  • Used to cross Goa Kingdom’s inner wall and evade gunfire from multiple directions. 23 26
  • Grants rapid changes in aerial direction, though extensive use consumes stamina. 23 26
  • Reached LV2 before Duen learned to execute Sin Shatter. 42

Paper Arts

Paper Arts lets Duen sense and follow airflow, making his body move with extreme flexibility to avoid attacks. 42 44

  • Lets him evade attacks from numerous pirates at close range. 44
  • Allowed him to survive Kuro’s high-speed Spoon technique and exhaust Kuro through prolonged evasion. 45
  • Has an approximate four-meter airflow-detection range. 45
  • Improves his ability to evade bullets, but does not make him invulnerable to them. 42

Sin Shatter

Sin Shatter is an aerial heavy-blade technique that combines Geppo with a full-power descending slash. 42

  • Requires Swordsmanship, Geppo LV2, and a heavy-bladed weapon. 42
  • Generates violent wind pressure, air friction, flames around the blade, and an explosion on impact. 42
  • Drains more than half of Duen’s stamina in a single use. 42
