Background

Nami spent four years surviving by theft, beginning at age ten. Her goal is to gather one hundred million Beli and free the villagers suffering under pirate oppression; this goal shapes her extreme focus on money and her refusal to spend it on herself. 13 14 17 18

Before meeting Duen, she escaped from a pirate ship and boarded the luxury cruise ship attacked by Lone Wolf Arnold. Though she intended to steal Arnold's treasure, she could not bring herself to act while the pirates were robbing and killing civilians. After Duen killed Arnold and claimed the bounty, she followed him to steal the seven million Beli reward. 14

Disguised as a hot-water attendant, Nami broke into Duen's room and attacked him with her three-section staff. He disarmed and captured her, then offered the bounty money in exchange for poker games rather than the demand she feared he would make. She remained with him because he gave her Beli in installments and was safer than the pirates she had known. 13 17
