Background / History

Origins of His Immortality Research

Orochimaru was Hiruzen Sarutobi’s student and Nawaki’s teacher. Nawaki died during the Second Shinobi World War after entering an explosive trap; his recovered body had been stripped of its internal organs. This loss led Orochimaru to dwell on life’s fragility and begin researching immortality 140 151.

He later worked with Root and participated in covert activities alongside Danzo. After defecting from Konoha, he attempted to renew their cooperation, but Danzo refused and sent Root operatives after him. A subsequent infiltration attempt failed when Root’s Hyuga and Uchiha members detected him before he could enter the village 66.

Recruiting Kabuto

Orochimaru admired Kabuto’s talent before his defection and repeatedly asked Danzo to assign the young spy to him. Danzo refused, then eventually used Orochimaru’s interest to prepare an infiltration operation involving Kabuto and Nonō’s staged deaths 63 64.

After Kabuto’s confrontation with Nonō, Orochimaru took him to an island hideout and presented intercepted orders as proof that Root intended to eliminate them both. He offered Kabuto a medical research facility, a place in the planned Hidden Sound Village, and a new identity free from Danzo’s control. He then sent Kabuto back to Konoha to gather intelligence 65 66.

The apparent betrayal was part of Danzo’s operation: Nonō survived and received treatment in Root, while Kabuto continued reporting to Danzo. Orochimaru later questioned Kabuto’s loyalties and openly acknowledged knowing that he was a spy when the Konoha Crush Plan began 67 115 132.

Konoha Crush Plan

Orochimaru persuaded Rasa to support an attack during the Chunin Exams, promising opportunities to seize Konoha’s bloodline abilities and secret techniques. Despite securing this alliance, he planned to kill Rasa and assume his identity 98 99.

During the Forest of Death examination, he targeted Sasuke as a replacement vessel. His desire for the Sharingan followed an earlier defeat by Akatsuki’s masked, one-eyed member using genjutsu. Orochimaru incapacitated Naruto with the Five Elements Seal and repeatedly evaded Sasuke’s attacks through substitutions before Menma, Torune, and Sai intervened 106 107 108.

Hiruzen interpreted the invasion as an attempt to change Konoha rather than destroy it. According to Kabuto’s reports, Orochimaru believed Hiruzen and Danzo had allowed the village to stagnate; his intended casualties were those two leaders, not Konoha’s remaining fighting force 110.

Disguised as Rasa, Orochimaru launched the plan and reanimated Hashirama, Tobirama, and the dead Kazekage. Konoha’s prepared reinforcements overcame his summons. After his escape route was cut off, Itachi immobilized him with genjutsu, and Hiruzen stopped Shisui from delivering a killing blow 132 133 136.

Capture and Return to Konoha

In Anbu custody, Hiruzen admitted that Orochimaru had always been his favorite student and questioned whether greater care and affirmation could have prevented his downfall. After his restraints were removed, Orochimaru wrecked the prison but chose not to escape, instead remaining curled in a corner 140.

He subsequently stayed with Hiruzen, became unusually introspective, and questioned his former confidence in power, control, and permanence. By the time future Sasuke arrived, Orochimaru had returned to Konoha and was preparing to join its new research facility 143 150 159.

Karma and Ōtsutsuki Research

Orochimaru secretly observed the battle with Urashiki and used snakes to obtain a tissue sample. Studying the sample and Menma’s account of Urashiki’s words, he deduced that Karma was a means of bodily replacement and revival. He also proposed that the timeline had excluded Urashiki’s soul, leaving power without the original soul inside Menma’s mark 173.

With Kabuto’s assistance, he developed examination equipment and described Karma as a data file gradually read by its host’s body. He warned Menma to return if the mark changed and later discovered that using Karma accelerated its thawing 174 175 284.

His support came with divided loyalties. Despite Menma’s requests for secrecy, Orochimaru disclosed the Karma, Ten-Tails, and God Tree Fruit plan to Danzo. He later explained that he had promised Menma’s grandfather to report what he learned 284 303.

At Danzo’s request, he passed Killer B’s location to Akatsuki through a snake summoned using a concealed formula on Sasori’s puppet body. This intelligence redirected Akatsuki toward the Eight-Tails 294 295 296.

Wartime Research and Resurrection

Before Menma left Konoha, Orochimaru supplied an upgraded limiter bracelet and warned him to be careful. He later used the God of Death Mask sent by Menma to reverse the Reaper Death Seal, sacrificing his current body and transferring into a prepared spare. He released Minato’s soul but allowed it to dissipate rather than preserving or reanimating it himself 303 308 309.

During the war, Orochimaru helped introduce Scientific Ninja Tools and Konoha’s combat puppets. Raikage A appointed him commander of the new Puppet Combat Unit, with Hiruko as deputy. His intelligence on Amado led Menma to investigate the scientist, and Amado’s information subsequently enabled Orochimaru to devise a coordinated counterattack against Boro 317 318 320.

At Menma’s request, he later reanimated Kushina using a captured White Zetsu as the sacrifice. He gave her Menma’s Flying Thunder God kunai and advised her to remain hidden so that Allied shinobi would not seal her before Menma’s intended resurrection plan could proceed 335.

Appearance

  • Pale complexion: His face is described as bloodless or as white as a ghost 136 173.
  • Snake-like eyes: A recurring distinguishing feature during recruitment, conversation, and research 66 151 335.
  • Hoarse voice: Described as magnetic and raspy when addressing Menma 123 173.
  • Kimono: Wears one when approaching Menma before the Karma examination 173.
  • Changeable face: Uses another person’s face during the Forest of Death encounter and impersonates Rasa during the invasion 108 123 132.
  • Renewed youth: After transferring into the Urashiki-derived body, appears young enough for Menma to compare their ages 183.

Personality

Orochimaru identifies intellectual curiosity as the purpose behind his pursuit of power and knowledge. He sees experimentation, accumulated abilities, and repeated rebirth as ways to construct a more complete self. His interest extends from ninjutsu and bloodlines to souls, resurrection, and advanced technology 66 123 173.

He is manipulative and suspicious, tailoring promises to a person’s vulnerabilities. With Kabuto, he offers protection, belonging, and answers about identity; with Rasa, he exploits humiliation and fear for Sunagakure’s future. He remains wary of Kabuto even while claiming to trust him 66 98 115.

Defeat exposes a more vulnerable side. Hiruzen’s admission of affection visibly unsettles him, and he later acknowledges that he cannot control everything. His concern for Menma also becomes more direct, though it does not prevent him from sharing Menma’s secrets with Danzo 140 150 284 303.
