Background

Sasuke first meets Uzumaki Menma and Naruto by the Konoha river. Initially shy and reserved, he quickly accepts their friendship and invites them to play again the next day. His older brother Itachi later collects him, and Sasuke complains that Itachi has had less time for him since becoming a ninja. 31 32

He grows up in the Uchiha household with Fugaku, Mikoto, and Itachi. Sasuke is confused when Mikoto gives overwhelming affection to Menma and Naruto during their visit to the Uchiha compound, unaware that they are the children of her close friend Kushina Uzumaki. 43

At the Ninja Academy, Sasuke cultivates an aloof, handsome image that attracts a crowd of girls. Menma and Naruto retaliate against his arrogance by placing Kinja the snake on him, causing the girls to pile onto Sasuke in panic. 58 When Mizuki proposes spying on Menma and Naruto for revenge, Sasuke withholds any commitment and tells Menma about Mizuki’s scheme instead. 59
