Background

Neji is Hizashi Hyuga’s son and Hinata Hyuga’s cousin. As a member of the Hyuga branch family, he bore the Caged Bird Seal and trained in the Hyuga Clan’s Gentle Fist under his father. Even as a child, he was regarded as a clan genius, having trained for more than a year by the time he fought Naruto and Menma. 16 24 30

He first encounters Naruto and Menma while secretly following them as they escort Hinata home. Neji insists that he is watching them to protect Hinata from their influence, then effortlessly defeats Naruto and outclasses Menma’s less-developed taijutsu before Hiashi intervenes. 16

Neji continues observing Hinata’s group with his Byakugan. Menma catches him in the forest and coerces him into carrying Menma back to the others by threatening to expose his surveillance; despite the hostile start, Neji later becomes part of their circle. 23 24 35

When Hiashi moves to abolish the Hyuga elders and the main-and-branch-family system, Neji and Hinata sense that something serious is happening within the clan. They publicly support the reform at the clan assembly, helping prompt the other clansmen to follow suit. 33 34 Neji has his Caged Bird Seal removed immediately afterward, though his friends initially fail to notice the missing forehead bandage. Hinata reassures him that this means they never saw him as bound by the seal. 35
