Background / History
Following the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox Uprising, Menma and Naruto were treated as potential calamities despite being Minato Namikaze and Kushina Uzumaki’s children. To protect one of the Jinchūriki, Hiruzen Sarutobi allowed Danzō to take Menma under strict surveillance; Danzō became his adoptive grandfather. 1
Menma was raised in Root, where Danzō arranged elite and brutal training from the age of three. His arrival also changed Root’s atmosphere: personnel who had previously lived only for missions gradually became more expressive and hopeful around him. 6 27 120
After graduating from the Academy, Menma was assigned to a Root genin squad led by Yamanaka Fu alongside Sai and Aburame Torune. By the time of the Chūnin Exams, he had already completed nine B-rank and two A-rank missions despite having no D- or C-rank assignments. 71 103
Appearance
At age sixteen, Menma wears his hair to his waist, usually tied in a ponytail, and dresses in a loose, colorful kimono while carrying a long pipe modeled after the White Snake Sage’s. 178
- Complete Sage Mode — Dragon horns, scales, snake-like pupils, and green eye shadow; Sage Chakra manifests as a dragon. 176
- Little/Small Dragon Person form — A scaled defensive form with enhanced resilience and resistance to illusion-based attacks. 186 223
- Ōtsutsuki evolution — Pale skin, white hair, white horns, Byakugan-like veins around the eyes, and golden Rinnegan. 353
Personality
Menma is openly boastful, playful, and prone to treating serious situations as opportunities to show off. He enjoys praise, calls powerful weapons “a man’s romance,” and often taunts opponents before defeating them. 71 156 201
Despite his immaturity and occasional cruelty, Menma is highly perceptive and strategic. He plans around enemy weaknesses, prepares for threats far beyond the current era, and recruits Jinchūriki to prevent the destruction of the Shinobi World. 78 212 237
His Root upbringing gives him a pragmatic view of missions; he is willing to appear cold or ruthless to complete an objective. However, he also protects allies, reassures former enemies such as Ranmaru, and repeatedly acts to prevent others from being harmed by larger conflicts. 182 232 238
Abilities & Skills
Mind’s Eye of the Kagura
Menma possesses the Uzumaki clan’s advanced sensory technique.
- Senses chakra disturbances across a radius of roughly one to two kilometers. 44
- Identifies known chakra signatures, locations, numbers, characteristics, and movement speed. 44 78
- Detects hostile intent, allowing him to identify threats such as Mizuki before they act. 48 51
- Can suppress his own chakra to evade other sensory ninja. 44
Jinchūriki Power
Menma is the host of the complete Nine-Tails, Kurama, with whom he shares an unusually cooperative bond. 134 225 298
- Rapidly regenerates injuries through Kurama’s chakra and his Uzumaki constitution. 48 166 223
- Can enter partial Tailed Beast transformations, reaching at least Four-Tails state. 90 138 144
- Uses Tailed Beast Balls and combines Kurama’s chakra with Rasengan-based techniques. 144 170
- Partial transformation restricts his ability to use ninjutsu; he avoids it against opponents requiring Sage techniques and Flying Thunder God mobility. 237
- Has not fully mastered Kurama Mode, as Kurama’s complete power exceeds his physical capacity at that point. 172 298
Ryūchi Cave Sage Mode
After six months of training under the White Snake Sage, Menma achieves Complete Sage Mode. 175 176
- Vastly strengthens his ninjutsu, taijutsu, durability, healing, and sensory range. 176 223
- Enhances the operational range of his Flying Thunder God Technique. 176
- Produces a Sage Dragon formed from Sage Chakra. 176 199
- Uses Sage Art techniques including Inorganic Reincarnation, White Stimulation Technique, White Rush Technique, and Vacuum Blade. 186 199 223 347
- His scaled form prevents opponents from disrupting his chakra points and can render him effectively immune to illusion techniques by blocking his own vision. 186
Flying Thunder God Technique
Menma learns the Fourth Hokage’s space-time ninjutsu and employs it as his primary mobility technique. 157 163
- Teleports to marked Flying Thunder God Kunai. 178 236
- Uses the technique offensively to evade, reposition, and attack from blind spots. 198 222
- Flying Thunder God Guidance creates a barrier that redirects incoming attacks, including a Tailed Beast Ball and Madara’s falling meteors. 265 337
- Can transport allies out of battlefield-scale threats, including Chibaku Tensei. 238
Karma
Urashiki’s Karma mark gives Menma Ōtsutsuki-derived abilities, but initially threatens to overwrite his body with Urashiki’s data. Orochimaru installs a limiter to restrain the process. 170 175 190
- Ninjutsu Absorption — Absorbs chakra-condensed ninjutsu and converts it into stored chakra. 260 264
- Space-Time Portal — Opens portals to locations Menma has previously visited, without the sensory-range restriction of Flying Thunder God. 264
- Displacement Space — Alters an object’s trajectory through spatial displacement, compensating for the directional limits of thrown Flying Thunder God Kunai. 265
- His limiter interferes with access to Karma’s more advanced abilities. 264
Ōtsutsuki Rinnegan Techniques
After becoming an Ōtsutsuki, Menma awakens a golden Rinnegan with space-time-related abilities. 353 354
- World Severance — Severs the space between a target and its destination, preventing Isshiki from escaping. 354
- Otherworld — Separates Menma and an opponent into distinct spaces, preventing the opponent’s attacks from reaching him. 354
- Can perceive chakra pathways and see through objects immediately after his evolution. 353
- Creates a Kekkei Mōra-class Spiral Wheel Mandala combining fire, wind, earth, water, lightning, yin, and yang transformations. 354
Ninjutsu and Sealing Techniques
Menma is proficient in Water, Wind, and Earth Release, with unusually high chakra reserves and rapid ninjutsu learning ability. 44 78
- Creates large-scale water environments with Water Release: Water Surge / Raging Wave. 113 114
- Counters powerful Water Release with Wind Release techniques such as Great Vacuum Sphere and Vacuum Serial Waves. 90
- Uses Rasengan variants, including the Spiraling Ring of Emptiness and the valley-destroying Great Spiraling Ring of Emptiness. 178 180
- Adamantine Sealing Chains restrain Tailed Beasts, suppress berserk Jinchūriki, and bind otherwise immortal enemies. 223 256 298
- Performs the Soul Detachment Binding Seal to seal Yomi after immobilizing him with the chains. 256
Nine Masked Beasts and Ryūchi Cave Summons
Menma’s unique summoning technique produces nine chakra-based summoned beasts, while his Ryūchi Cave contract grants him the assistance of the snake sisters. 120 150 236
- The Nine Masked Beasts can engage enemy summons and Akatsuki members independently. 198 236
- Documented beasts include Celestial Maiden, Genbu, Azure Dragon, and Sage Dragon. 76 155 178 199
- Tagorihime, Ichikishimahime, and Tagitsuhime serve as his summons and companions; their venom can quickly disable enemies. 150 154
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Flying Thunder God Kunai — Marked kunai used for teleportation, battlefield positioning, and Guidance barriers. 178 265
- Pipe — Adopted after observing the White Snake Sage; carried while training at Ryūchi Cave. 178
- Sasori’s mecha — A roughly nineteen-meter puppet mecha acquired from Obito after the Akatsuki confrontation; sealed into a scroll because it lacks a cockpit and relied on Sasori’s regeneration core. 201
- Sealing scrolls — Used to store equipment and perform techniques such as the Soul Detachment Binding Seal. 237 256
