Mahama hesitated for a moment, then looked intrigued.

Ruger was naturally even more interested. His eyes were already wide, determined not to miss a single detail. He had had some expectations before casting the spell, but nothing like this fellow. Most Shadow Servants were not particularly powerful combat servants. He had read that some Wizards who liked this spell would train them into genuine attendants, personal servants who usually hid in their masters' shadows. Most had indistinct human forms, standing primly behind their masters like reserved butlers, serving them tea and water.

His, however, was special. It kept changing, and its final appearance bore no trace of his handsome looks. Even when he fully unleashed his Dragonkin bloodline and assumed his complete demonic form, he did not look like this. It resembled the mutations produced by those who preferred to cultivate their Shadow Servants for combat. When casting through their own shadows, these Wizards would use little tricks to draw in more qualities of the Shadow World, or even small Shadow Creatures, merging them into their newly created Shadow Servants at the instant the spell took shape.

In fact, some of the Wizards who genuinely treated their Shadow Servants as attendants had started out that way. As they continued advancing, the Shadow Servants they had painstakingly cultivated gradually became less useful, so they turned them into discreet, silent personal attendants instead.

Ruger suspected that something had changed in his own shadow when it connected to the elusive Shadow World.

Perhaps even a simple shadow held an extraordinary significance to that world.

An ordinary person's shadow looked no different from a Wizard's, but to that world, they were different. One book had indeed put forward that idea.
