Ruger could not help letting out a howl, only to get a bellyful of wind. The sleek fur on his head flattened against him, and his ears flapped in the gale. Although he had possessed wings for a long time, he had never flown like this. It was an entirely different experience. Such marvelous things as nightmare organs had ultimately come into being so that Wizards could borrow a trace of nightmare power, making it easier to travel through that strange world and blend into it. His simply happened to be wings.
His Nightmare Wings could keep growing by devouring and digesting things from that world. In theory, they would become stronger and stronger, but that was not an option right now. He had neither the energy nor the time. Besides, using his Nightmare Wings in the Cavern World consumed nightmare power very quickly, so he normally used them only for brief periods.
He savored the freedom of hurtling through the air. Using his wings this way made the spell more effective.
Although Scorching Wings had the word "wings" in its name, it was ultimately a spell. He did not need to flap to fly, and the occasional spreading or shifting of the wings served only to adjust his flight.
Suddenly, Ruger flipped over and plunged straight toward the Endless Sea. With his speed behind it, the dive looked astonishingly fierce. Just before he struck the water, he spread his wings.
He howled again and skimmed across the sea, spitting as he flew, expelling the seawater and a little fish that had splashed into his mouth while he howled and laughed.
