Background / History

Xuan, a Muromachi-period Ten Shadows user, was believed to be the only sorcerer in history to have subdued Mahoraga. His successful subjugation removed the threat that had previously kept him from openly opposing the Zenin Clan. By the present era, this achievement earned Xuan the title “Master of the Eight-Handled Sword.” 1 34

Xuan later resummons Mahoraga to test both himself and the shikigami. He forces it through successive adaptations with Dark Surge Eight Settled Waters, slashing attacks, Chaos, and Black Flash, before defeating it through an accelerated Piercing Ox strike. 48

Mahoraga is not a single universal entity shared by every Ten Shadows user: each user's shikigami exists uniquely within their soul. This distinction becomes central when Megumi's Mahoraga appears independently in Higuruma's domain, while Yuta's separate Mahoraga is summoned through a binding vow. 69 70

Appearance

Mahoraga is usually a large, white humanoid shikigami marked by a golden Dharma wheel above its head. Its appearance changes drastically through adaptation, including giant forms, feminine human-like forms, and forms inherited by other shikigami. 48 74 116

Personality

Mahoraga's behavior depends heavily on its summoner and adaptations. A newly summoned, untamed version can regard everyone nearby as an enemy, as seen when Yuta's Mahoraga indiscriminately attacked allies and opponents alike. 70

Under Xuan and Zenin Gen, Mahoraga is intensely loyal, obedient, and protective. It follows orders without hesitation, assists Gen in battle, and refuses to accept that Xuan's defeat was caused by its weakness. 74 129 It can also display a dry, literal sense of humor, particularly while acting as Megumi's defense attorney. 68 69

After gaining a human identity, Mahoraga develops fear, pain, excitement, tears, and a desire to be human rather than merely occupy humanity's place. 80 81 82
