Background / History
Huo Gu awakened within a growing cluster of replicated cells, identifying himself as “Huo Gu” while questioning whether he was truly the original human or a being that had inherited that human’s memories. His first crisis was a temperate bacteriophage infection spreading through every dividing cell in his collective. 4
Drawing on memories from his former life, Huo Gu began modifying his biology to survive: redesigning cell walls against infection, developing feeding mechanisms, and planning a visual system by acquiring useful organelles from other organisms. 7 9 He later described himself as having once been a professor of alien archaeology, with no formal military training. 226
As his collective expanded, Huo Gu transformed it into a plant-like rhizome network spanning kilometers across the seabed. The network extracted inorganic matter from stone, harvested organic material through transplanted “mouths,” and collected genetic samples, including a microorganism with a cell nucleus. 23
Huo Gu subsequently reshaped the planet on a global scale. His roots reached a lava region 523 kilometers below the surface, while purpose-built Hives expanded his life field, processed matter, and helped regulate planetary heat. 59 After returning from confinement, he resumed control of the global warming system and became the central authority recognized by the Collectors as their Will. 95
Appearance
Huo Gu has no permanent body. He is a distributed consciousness that can redesign cell clusters into specialized organisms, thought carriers, and humanoid disguises. 4 150
- Initially existed as a collective of single-celled organisms. 4
- Has operated through rhizomes, Hives, and enormous thought-carrier organisms. 23 59 201
- Can take the form of a jelly-like cell mass capable of stretching, burrowing through metal, and reshaping itself. 150
- Has used a white Collector body in combat. 149
- Can form tentacles, eyes, mouths, and fang-limbs from his own biomass. 149 305 333
- Can assume Serin forms for covert operations and create a genuine human appearance after recovering human genetic material. 267 345
Personality
Huo Gu is analytical, cautious, and intensely adaptive. He approaches threats as problems to be studied—whether by analyzing alien technology, dissecting captured enemies, testing defenses, or revising biological designs after failure. 43 172 202 393
He refuses to accept mere survival without dignity. This conviction drives him to retaliate against stronger enemies rather than remain hidden indefinitely. 43 In war, he is pragmatic and often ruthless, willing to expend disposable cell clusters or employ deception, infiltration, and overwhelming numerical force to preserve the wider civilization. 142 149 229
Despite this ruthlessness, Huo Gu is protective of the Collectors and considers their minds more valuable than their presence on the battlefield. He also retains human compassion and struggles with the consequences of exercising absolute power over his creations. 141 255
Abilities & Skills
Cellular Control and Bioengineering
Huo Gu can directly command and redesign living cell clusters, creating organisms suited to specific environments, industries, or combat roles.
- Alters cellular structures, including cell walls, sensory organs, locomotion systems, and biological weapons. 7 9 14
- Collects and interprets genetic material for use in later designs. 23 333
- Creates specialized organisms such as Hives, Cannon Beasts, Machine-Gun Beasts, amphibious infiltrators, and mothership organisms. 59 103 142 213
- Can rapidly regenerate or rebuild expendable forms through connecting cellular material. 147
- Cannot simply grant unfamiliar abilities to every species; Gaia Organisms must explore their own evolutionary path. 257
Life Field Command Network
Huo Gu commands his creations through a shared life field, allowing orders and information to spread across enormous biological networks.
- Issues commands to swarms and receives battlefield updates through the life field. 109 153
- Uses the network to coordinate Collectors, roots, Hives, and Mothership Organisms. 108 217
- Can overwhelm life field and radio channels with a powerful transmission. 255
- The network’s absolute loyalty became a strategic weakness when enemies forged orders in Huo Gu’s name. 860
Distributed Senses and Information Processing
Huo Gu builds sensory systems into his organisms and combines their observations into a wider awareness.
- Developed highly sensitive visual organs capable of detecting subtle atmospheric spectral changes. 60
- Uses rhizomes and distributed “threads” to construct three-dimensional battlefield models. 149
- Employs biological radar, eyes, radar-like structures, and night vision in different bodies. 110 201 218
- Lost much of his surface awareness when Annihilation Bombardment destroyed his root network. 175
- Early expansion created communication delays that hindered precise swarm control. 20
Shapeshifting, Infiltration, and Parasitism
Huo Gu can conceal himself, imitate other species, and invade targets from within.
- Uses Veil forms, detached cell clusters, and parasitic spread to infiltrate alien personnel. 147
- Controls alien corpses with fang-limbs, turns them into improvised combat bodies, and harvests their organic matter. 149
- Can burrow through metal by reshaping a cell mass and expelling material. 150
- Mimics alien voices through puppeted bodies, eventually speaking fluently enough to access a mothership mainframe. 202
- Uses species shapeshifting to infiltrate Serin facilities and conduct research. 267 269
Strategic Warfare
Huo Gu is the Amoeba Civilization’s principal military planner, combining biological production with captured alien technology.
- Deduced that an unknown attacker was positioned in outer space and planned a counterattack rather than remain concealed. 43
- Defeated enemy cylinders by combining meteor swarms, projectile fire, and surface-adhering assault organisms that destroyed laser arrays. 108 109 110
- Uses deception, bait, hostage-like bargaining chips, and false indications of orbital cannon numbers to constrain enemy fleets. 178
- Built Stronghold Planets with thermal-ray orbital arrays and sublight electromagnetic cannons. 216 217
- Countered a lightspeed attack by identifying its massless unknown matter and intercepting it with single-celled organisms. 393
- Identified a Celestial Mothership masquerading as a giant eye as nanomachines, then ordered Spore Bomb deployment to destroy it. 393
