Background / History
Calca is the Holy Queen of the Roble Holy Kingdom. Before Higashino Makoto’s intervention, she is portrayed as a well-intentioned ruler whose authority is constrained by nobles and by the divide between the northern and southern regions of the kingdom 46 48.
After meeting Makoto, Calca invites him to a private study in the royal palace. There, he bluntly tells her that she is weak as a ruler because she lacks the courage to do necessary “dirty work” 46. His criticism forces her to reassess her reign, and she decides to change rather than continue relying on appeasement 47.
Calca responds by creating three plans to unify the north and south: establishing a coordination body, arranging joint military exercises, and dealing with nobles who exploit the regional divide. She orders nobles to send a major portion of their forces to the northern border within ten days to prepare for a demi-human invasion 48.
She later establishes the North-South Coordination Office directly under royal authority, bypassing the Noble Council’s normal influence over appointments. She also convenes the first joint military assembly of northern and southern troops at the northern border, using the demi-human threat to force the southern nobles into accepting the crown’s direct orders 50.
During the defensive battle against the demi-human army, Calca chooses to fight alongside her soldiers after seeing the defensive line repeatedly fall back and casualties exceed thirty percent. Her decision strengthens morale and shows that she has begun to understand the burden of leadership 53.
Calca develops personal feelings for Higashino Makoto after valuing his honesty and presence. When she learns that he intends to leave the Holy Kingdom in half a month, she visits him secretly at night and eventually confesses her feelings, even asking him to stay and suggesting they have an heir together 57 58. Makoto refuses, telling her that she needs to grow and focus on the kingdom rather than bind him through a child 58 59.
Much later, Makoto returns to the Holy Kingdom and surprises Calca in her chambers during her skincare routine. Their reunion is playful but emotionally charged, with Calca showing embarrassment, anger, and relief 276. During a later walk through the capital, she admits her fear of aging and her desire to remain young. Makoto offers to transform her into an angel, and she accepts 279.
Appearance
Calca maintains a youthful appearance and uses magic as part of her skincare routine, suggesting she is conscious of her public image and physical youth 276. Her later fear of aging becomes one of the reasons she accepts transformation into an angel 279.
- Maintains her youthful appearance with magic 276
- Shows personal concern over aging and mortality 279
- Transformed into an angel by the Refined Feather of Ascension 279
Personality
Calca begins as a compassionate but hesitant ruler, reluctant to dirty her hands even when governing demands hard choices. Makoto’s criticism strikes at her insecurity as monarch, but she does not reject it; instead, she reflects on it and decides to change 46 47.
Her leadership growth is practical and visible. She moves from appeasement to direct royal action, forces nobles to mobilize, bypasses the Noble Council when necessary, and uses crisis to strengthen national unity 48 50.
Calca is also emotionally vulnerable. She values Makoto because he treats her frankly rather than as an untouchable queen, and she longs to be seen as “just Calca” rather than only the Holy Queen 57 60. Her feelings lead her to make selfish requests, but she is capable of recognizing her mistakes and recommitting herself to her duties 58 59.
By the later Holy Kingdom arc, Calca becomes more assertive about her personal desires. She confesses that she no longer cares as much about others’ opinions and wants to live as herself 282.

Story Role / Major Arcs
Reform of the Holy Kingdom
Calca’s first major arc centers on becoming a stronger monarch. Makoto’s criticism pushes her to stop ruling through excessive compromise and begin enforcing royal authority 46 47. She then launches reforms to bridge the north-south divide and mobilize the kingdom against the demi-human invasion 48 50.
Demi-Human War
During the demi-human assault, Calca proves her growth by entering the battlefield herself. Her action shows the southern forces the same bloodshed endured by the north and contributes to Makoto’s broader plan to unify the kingdom through shared sacrifice 53.
Love and Duty
Calca’s feelings for Makoto create conflict between her personal desires and her duty as Holy Queen. She asks him to stay and even suggests producing an heir, but his refusal forces her to recognize the selfishness of trying to use a child or personal attachment as a political solution 57 58 59.
Return and Transformation
When Makoto returns to the Holy Kingdom, Calca’s feelings remain unresolved but more openly acknowledged 276 280. Her later fear of aging leads her to accept Makoto’s offer to become an angel, marking a major personal transformation and granting her freedom from old age 279.
