The reason neither of them had rushed to attack was not merely because they wanted to observe one another, but also because of the restraint expected of the strong.
Now that the courtesy of exchanging names had been completed, neither side had any intention of compromising or avoiding conflict.
There was no longer any reason to avoid battle.
Like a flash of lightning, they crossed the distance between them in an instant at a speed beyond the limits of human vision, and their spearpoints collided!
Author's Note:
P.S. Rhongomyniad [Rhongomiant] was Arthur's spear in the legends of King Arthur. In the Battle of Camlann, the final chapter of those legends, Arthur used this spear to pierce the traitorous knight Mordred.
Battle of the Valkyries, Part One
A sound rang out, like the roar of a massive bronze bell struck with tremendous force, humming as it spread in all directions.
It was as though all the air in the space had been compressed together before suddenly bursting apart. Shockwaves swept outward from the point of impact, kicking up clouds of sand.
Even the forest around the perimeter seemed to tremble. Leaves rustled, and even the ground beneath the two fighters at the center of the impact sank inward.
That was merely the result of a clash between spearpoints.
And in that first exchange, Shalltear had been at a disadvantage.
Arthur's thrust had carried strength beyond her expectations, sending her flying back in haste. The other woman did not miss that excellent opportunity and immediately pursued.
The first strike, swift as a meteor, pierced Shalltear's shoulder and left a bloody hole. Without the slightest hesitation, Arthur stepped forward, preparing to follow with a second thrust.
At that moment, Shalltear immediately regained her balance in midair and swung her empty hand.
[Wall of Stone]
A massive stone wall shot up from the ground, blocking Arthur's path. It collided with the thrusting spear and was easily shattered, though the knight's assault was delayed for one second.
But that was enough.
Magic power surged out from within her, solidifying into nearly purplish-red flames. In the blink of an eye, Shalltear's dress vanished, replaced by a suit of reddish-brown full-body armor.
Her initial loss had not been because Shalltear was weaker than her opponent. She had simply let her guard down. The fact that she had found no match since arriving in this other world had caused her to misjudge Arthur's strength.
She had entered battle without even activating her strongest Valkyrie state, and had been injured the instant the fight began. If it had been Ainz or Aya, they would probably have reflected on their own mistakes first.
Unfortunately, Shalltear did not possess that awareness yet. At this moment, her mind held more anger than anything else. Activating a special skill to restore the wound on her shoulder to its state before the attack, Shalltear raised the Pipette Lance and blocked her opponent's strike.
Negative magic such as [Greater Lethal] could also heal an undead being like Shalltear, but there was not enough time—during that brief opening, Shalltear chose to cast the enhancement spell [Sanctuary of Strength].
This time, the shafts of their spears collided. In her Valkyrie state, Shalltear caught the attack. Their strength was essentially evenly matched—that was the judgment both of them reached at the same time.
They each took a step back, then thrust their spearpoints at each other again. Arthur tilted her head, and the wind pressure from the Pipette Lance grazed past her ear, while Shalltear deflected the silver spear's thrust with her gauntlet.
A silver arc flashed past, and Shalltear felt as if her chest had been struck by an iron hammer, causing her to stagger back a step.
Only in the next second did she see the source of the blow. It was the knight's knee, slamming into Shalltear's breastplate with fierce momentum.
She could do that too? The startled thought had barely formed when a fist wrapped in a silver-white gauntlet was already approaching Shalltear's cheek.
The air distorted as a shockwave erupted outward with Shalltear at its center. The knight reacted swiftly, violently kicking off the ground with her right foot and leaping backward out of the airburst's range.
