Hong Lingyin

"Dad, my younger sisters died. Will I die too?" Inside the laboratory, a little girl sat on the floor, slowly speaking to the lump of flesh inside the glass room.
Perhaps the little girl's voice had awakened Hong Mo, because his consciousness gradually began to clear.
"No, I promise!" Hong Mo looked at his expressionless daughter, his heart filled with tenderness. Instinctively, he answered her question.
"Dad, was that you talking?" The little girl raised her head in surprise.
"Yes, it was me." At that moment, Hong Mo realized something was wrong. He had not spoken, nor could he speak. He had merely thought those words, yet they had been conveyed into his daughter's mind through his superpower field.
Was this the new ability he had gained after being stimulated by the Azure Thunderbird serum?
"I'm so happy, Dad. You finally spoke to me." The little girl began to cry. It was clear that she was deeply lost. Two younger sisters had been born alongside her. Two years ago, the first had died during an experiment. In the most recent experiment, the last sister had died as well. Now, she was the only one left. Because of the different education she had received, she was not afraid of death. Still, being alone, she could not help but feel lost.
At a time like this, her father had suddenly become able to communicate with her. What an enormous source of support that was.
Hong Mo spoke with his daughter about many things. She had never left this research institute, and the education she had received was far from normal. Most of it had been about how to cooperate with experiments. Through their conversations, Hong Mo learned that this daughter of his yearned desperately for the outside world.
Hong Mo told her many things—about the outside world, about her mother, Mu Siyu... In the end, she asked Hong Mo to give her a name.
Lingyin!
Hong Lingyin!
This was the name Hong Mo gave her, the name of his own daughter. She had once said that she liked listening to the sound of wind chimes by her bed. Unfortunately, there was no wind in this research institute.
And even less freedom!
Hong Lingyin went back. Her rest time was over. However, every week, she had one hour to come and talk with Hong Mo.
They had to get out. Hong Mo's conviction grew even firmer.
2023.11.12, little Lingyin awakened her superpower—a complete awakening. The moment she awakened, she had already reached LV3. However, this LV level was not directly related to strength; it referred instead to how complete one's superpower was.
LV1: Physical mutation begins.
LV2: Energy conversion changes.
LV3: Superpower field awakens.
LV4: Soul space awakens.
LV5: Soul implement manifests.
These were the five classifications for superpowered individuals currently recognized internationally. Hong Mo did not know the specific reasoning behind them. He had even learned of the classification system itself through little Lingyin. When her superpower awakened, a researcher had briefly mentioned this information.
The instant little Lingyin's superpower field awakened, Hong Mo knew. It was as though an indescribable connection had formed between them. Then, Hong Mo discovered that he could communicate with little Lingyin from afar. As long as he directed the words in his heart toward her, they would trigger electromagnetic fluctuations in space. Little Lingyin could receive those fluctuations and transform them into the words Hong Mo wanted to say.
Hong Mo was utterly astonished. This was practically a personal, dedicated cellphone.
This was a secret shared only between Hong Mo and little Lingyin. No one else knew. Every day, aside from practicing his own superpower, Hong Mo also guided little Lingyin in becoming familiar with hers. Hong Lingyin truly was the daughter of Hong Mo and Mu Siyu. She possessed two superpowers, electromagnetism and ice, though both were still rather weak.
Nothing changed in the laboratory, at least not from Hong Mo and Hong Lingyin's perspective. Perhaps they had never had any way to learn more in the first place.
Hong Mo's focus recently was no longer his electromagnetic superpower, but had shifted to his regenerative ability. He had thought it over recently. Since regeneration was called a superpower, then surely it could be mastered just like electromagnetic abilities. Just as he could control the strength of an electric current, he should certainly be able to control his body's regeneration.
Returning to a human form was the first step toward leaving the research institute. Even if Hong Mo got out now, people would only see him as a mutated creature. He would either be attacked or captured.
One thing that reassured Hong Mo was that his bones had not changed. They still formed a human skeleton; there was simply far too much fat covering it. As long as he could control the regeneration of that excess flesh, he could restore his human body.
Hong Mo's first step was to understand his cells on a microscopic level.
By compressing his superpower field and then permeating his body with it, he could achieve an effect similar to internal vision. The stronger the superpower field, the clearer this internal vision became. Hong Mo's first step, then, was to compress his superpower field and examine his own body from within.
The second step was to injure himself, then study the essence of regeneration during the process of recovery.
The third step was to gradually control his body's regeneration through his superpower field.
The three steps were very simple, but carrying them out was incomparably difficult. Hong Mo made no progress for a long time, but he would not be discouraged. He had to gain control over his body's regenerative ability.
He electrolyzed the air, generating extreme heat. Hong Mo's outer skin gradually turned red, then scorched yellow, and finally became black ash. Throughout the process, Hong Mo endured tremendous pain, and it was pain he had inflicted upon himself. To sustain that pain, he also had to focus his mind and control his electric current.
Regeneration began!
After Hong Mo withdrew the current, his body began regenerating rapidly. In truth, while his skin and muscles had been destroyed earlier, his body had also been regenerating. But at that time, Hong Mo simply had no spare attention to observe the process. Not everyone could split their attention in two, especially while enduring such pain.
Suppress it—suppress the speed of regeneration, suppress the areas regenerating. Hong Mo compressed his superpower field to its limit, desperately trying to control every cell in his body.
"Dad, are you in pain?" A soft voice reached Hong Mo's mind. Hong Lingyin lay motionless on a hospital bed some distance away. Ever since Hong Lingyin awakened her superpower, she had grown increasingly frail. Tests eventually revealed that her body was too weak while her awakened superpowers were too powerful, causing her genes to exceed their capacity. Now, Hong Lingyin spent most of her time in a hospital bed.
Hong Lingyin's condition made Hong Mo even more anxious.
"Don't worry, I'm fine. I'm only familiarizing myself with my superpower. You need to take care of your body. I can't protect you right now." Hong Mo's heart was full of tenderness.
"Mm, I still want to see the sea."
"Haha, I'll definitely take you there." Hong Mo laughed in his mind. This was a little request he had promised Lingyin not long ago.
The regeneration ended. Hong Mo silently calculated the time. It was more than a minute slower than the last time. This result was not bad. As long as he kept trying, he would surely be able to control his body's regeneration. Surely.
The automatic cleaning machine inside the glass room started up. The muscle tissue destroyed by the intense heat was swept clean from the floor and sent into the drains.
While familiarizing himself with his regenerative ability, Hong Mo also occasionally created a few accidents. Yes, accidents—for example, electrocution.
The stupidest decision the people in this research institute had made was using Hong Mo as a generator. Without those circuits, perhaps Hong Mo would never have been able to leave this place. But with them, the outcome would be different.
Because Hong Mo's superpower was electromagnetism.
The current flowed along the circuit and suddenly surged while an old man was conducting an experiment.
Bzzzt...
The unexpected accident caused the lights in that room to go out abruptly. By the time the circuit was restored, the old man had already been minced into a heap of flesh by the instrument's sudden loss of control.
One! Hong Mo silently said to himself.
That old man had been one of the most skilled technicians in the institute and held considerable authority. After several years of experiments, Hong Mo had learned who the most important people in the institute were. What he needed to do now was make those people die one by one in "accidents."
Two months later, another accident occurred, killing ten people in total. Aside from one executive, the other nine were ordinary researchers.
The institute grew increasingly deserted. Although everyone here was highly educated and absolutely did not believe in ghosts, monsters, or vengeful spirits, they still could not withstand accidents happening every few days. Besides, who among those working here dared claim that their hands were not stained with the blood of innocents?
Anyone with connections had already pulled strings to leave the institute. Those who remained were merely the most ordinary researchers, people with neither means nor connections. Their work was simply to maintain the institute's most basic operations.
The state had certainly not abandoned this place, but few people were willing to come here.
In truth, Hong Mo could already leave this place using his own power, but not yet. Even if he got out, he would be captured as a monster. To blend into human society, he needed a human body.
Hong Mo could now more or less control his body's regeneration. It was not limited to regeneration, either—he could directly control his muscles to necrotize.
Chunks of fat on Hong Mo's left arm necrotized and fell away, revealing the bright-red muscles beneath.
Regenerate skin!
Hong Mo carefully controlled the skin on his left arm as it began to regenerate. Whenever the regeneration went out of control and grew excess fat or muscle, Hong Mo would force that part to necrotize.
An hour later, Hong Mo's left arm had regained a human appearance.
Solidify the form, then release control. Hong Mo let go of his control over the arm. Freed from suppression, it immediately swelled by a size, yet showed no sign of continuing to grow.
Hahaha!
Hong Mo laughed wildly in his heart. He had succeeded—he had finally succeeded. Once he controlled his entire body, he could leave. Being a little fat did not matter; if anything, it would help him hide among human society better.
