Background / History

Independence and the Chrysanthemum Douluo Feud

After Dugu Bo became a Titled Douluo, Qian Xunji sent Chrysanthemum Douluo to recruit him into Spirit Hall. Dugu Bo refused because he preferred living freely. Negotiations ended in a fight, beginning a rivalry marked by repeated clashes every few years 93.

His lower level and poor suitability for single combat initially put him at a disadvantage. As poison backlash stalled his cultivation and Chrysanthemum Douluo reached Level 95, the defeats became increasingly one-sided. Chrysanthemum’s description of him as the weakest Titled Douluo particularly offended him 93.

Poison Backlash and Meeting Qi Dao

Dugu Bo’s poison had fused with his flesh and penetrated his marrow. Improving his poison arts worsened the backlash, and he had already lost his son to the same affliction. The Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well suppressed his condition enough to keep him alive, but did not spare him persistent agony 50 51.

He investigated Qi Dao after hearing Dugu Yan praise him, but initially regarded him as another promising junior. When Yan relayed Qi Dao’s warning about their poisoning, Dugu Bo sought him out. Qi Dao’s composure, his sword’s ability to detect Dugu Bo, and his accurate diagnosis prompted a reassessment 49 50.

A simple transfer of poison into a Soul Bone was too dangerous because Dugu Bo’s toxins were already integrated into his body. Qi Dao instead proposed using blood from someone who had survived the Infernal Delicate Apricot and Octagonal Mysterious Ice Grass to moderate the toxins before transferring them. Dugu Bo reluctantly allowed Qi Dao to undertake the potentially fatal Ice and Fire Baptism 50 52.

Qi Dao survived, and Dugu Bo later confirmed that his backlash had been cured. Qi Dao also identified the Earth Dragon Golden Melon for Dugu Yan, whose subsequent Martial Soul evolution renewed Dugu Bo’s hope that she could become a Titled Douluo 53 55 56 86.

Protecting Qi Dao

During the confrontation at Notting Academy, Qi Dao invoked Dugu Bo’s potential retaliation as part of his protection against Tang Hao. After returning to Heaven Dou City, he explained the danger and asked Dugu Bo for direct protection. Dugu Bo agreed to move to Heaven Dou Academy and proposed eliminating Tang Hao before he could strike again 80 85.

He accepted the academy’s Honorary Elder position, attracting an enthusiastic welcome from its Three Education Commissioners. To avoid worrying Dugu Yan, he concealed the real reason and claimed that, with his poisoning cured, he simply wanted something to do 86.

Dugu Bo subsequently accompanied Qi Dao on dangerous Soul Ring hunts. He wounded a 70,000-year Dark Gold Bear and disabled its 20,000-year companion for Qi Dao’s fourth ring, then subdued the surviving older bear during the hunt for Qi Dao’s fifth ring. He also helped Dugu Yan obtain her 20,000-year fifth ring 88 89 98.

Settling the Old Score

Upon reaching Level 95, Dugu Bo brought Qi Dao to Heavenly Mountain Canyon to confront Chrysanthemum Douluo. He explained that their feud was not a mortal one: had Chrysanthemum and Ghost truly intended to kill him, they had previously had opportunities to do so 92 93.

His Soul Core overturned the old balance. More concentrated Soul Power strengthened his defenses and attacks, while superior endurance allowed him to outlast Chrysanthemum Douluo. He ended the duel before Ghost Douluo could intervene, leaving his rival bruised but not seriously injured 95 96.

Joint Hunts and Soul Bone Gains

Dugu Bo joined Qi Dao, Qian Renxue, Snake Lance Douluo, and Porcupinefish Douluo on a later Star Dou Great Forest expedition. He accepted Qian Renxue’s hidden identity, although her closeness to Qi Dao concerned him because of his hopes for Dugu Yan 137.

Against the Titan Giant Ape and Sky Azure Bull Python, he supplied repeated control effects while the other Douluos attacked. Following Qi Dao’s secret instructions, he also poisoned Xiao Wu, making her life leverage in negotiations. After the Titan Giant Ape sacrificed himself to Qian Renxue, Dugu Bo removed Xiao Wu’s poison 142 144.

He agreed to exchange surplus Immortal Herbs for Soul Bones, and later reached Level 96 after absorbing two bones. During the subsequent confrontation with Tang Hao, he appeared alongside Snake Lance and Porcupinefish Douluo; afterward, he selected Tang Hao’s roughly 50,000-year torso Soul Bone from the spoils 146 155 157 160.

Appearance

  • Build: Tall and thin, with sunken cheeks and sharply defined features 49.
  • Hair and eyes: Dark-green hair and green eyes 49.
  • Voice: Raspy and sinister-sounding 49.
  • Movement: Appears with ghostlike speed, closing the distance to Qi Dao almost instantly during their first meeting 49.

Personality

Dugu Bo is eccentric, reclusive, sharp-tongued, and fiercely independent. He refuses to treat Bibi Dong as his sovereign and readily mocks Chrysanthemum and Ghost Douluo. Despite his pride, he apologizes to Chrysanthemum when his suspicion threatens an opportunity for Qi Dao 80 86 93 94 95.

His devotion to Dugu Yan governs many of his decisions. Having watched his son die from poison backlash, he is willing to seek help from a much weaker junior to prevent the same fate for her. His matchmaking reflects both her affection for Qi Dao and his desire to ensure she has protection after his death 50 55.

His confidence is tempered by practical limits. He stops his victorious duel before facing Chrysanthemum and Ghost together, and acknowledges that he cannot reliably prevent the Titan Giant Ape from escaping alone. His protective loyalty does not exclude ruthlessness: he supports poisoning Xiao Wu as leverage and suggests killing Tang Hao preemptively 85 96 134 142.

Abilities & Skills

Jade Phosphorous Serpent Emperor Poison

  • Releases venom through poisonous mist and poison-infused Soul Power; residual poison from a strike causes surrounding vegetation to wither 88.
  • Can regulate a poisoned strike to incapacitate prey without killing it, preserving the finishing blow for another Soul Master 89.
  • Secretly delivers slow-acting lethal poison along the ground, as demonstrated against Xiao Wu 142.
  • Can remove his poison from a victim, restoring Xiao Wu after the sacrifice agreement 144.
  • Limit: Titled Douluo generally possess high poison resistance. Porcupinefish Douluo can absorb his poison and convert it into attack power, directly countering him 46 89.

Soul Core

  • Concentrates his Soul Power, improving the strength of his Soul Skills and his sustained combat output 85 95.
  • Supplies the endurance needed to outlast an equally ranked Chrysanthemum Douluo 96.
  • Leaves him much less depleted than Snake Lance and Porcupinefish after their battle with the Dark Demon Evil God Tiger 140.
  • Limit: Does not make him capable of safely fighting Chrysanthemum and Ghost Douluo together 96.

Poisonous Mist and Defensive Barrier

  • Jade Phosphor Bewildering Formation: Creates multicolored poisonous mist that attacks an opponent’s vision and mind, allowing Dugu Bo to reposition and attack from another direction 95.
  • Fifth Soul Skill: Condenses a serpent-shaped barrier capable of deflecting Chrysanthemum Douluo’s cutting-petal assault 95.

Sixth Soul Skill: Jade Phosphorous Serpent Emperor Break

  • His strongest single-target Soul Skill 89.
  • Under Martial Soul Avatar, launches his enormous serpent body into a devastating collision 88 89.
  • Combined with Time Freeze, leaves the 70,000-year Dark Gold Bear grievously wounded in a crater 89.

Seventh Soul Skill: Martial Soul Avatar

  • Transforms him into a green serpent approximately thirty to forty meters long 88.
  • Substantially increases his Soul Power and Soul Skill strength 96.

Eighth Soul Skill: Time Freeze

  • Immobilizes targets; during the Dark Gold Bear battle, everything within roughly a thousand meters appears frozen, including the air 89.
  • Can affect allies within its range: Qi Dao experiences its restraint despite watching from high above 89.
  • Creates openings for coordinated attacks by other Titled Douluo 142.
  • Limit: The Titan Giant Ape and Sky Azure Bull Python repeatedly break free even when it is combined with Medusa’s Gaze 142.

Medusa’s Gaze

  • A Soul Bone skill that fires a petrifying beam 142.
  • Used alongside Time Freeze to restrain the two forest beast kings 142.
  • Limit: The combined restraint remains weaker than Chrysanthemum and Ghost Douluo’s Two Forms Stillness Domain 142.

Ninth Soul Skill

  • An area attack rather than a specialized single-target move 88.
  • Combined with his eighth Soul Skill, is described as powerful enough to destroy a city 89.

Poison Formations

  • Protects the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well with a poisonous formation that he can part to admit visitors 51.
  • Its original poison activates after two hours, causing convulsions and withering meridians; expelling it requires at least Soul Douluo strength 51.
  • After reaching Level 94, upgrades it to threaten ordinary Titled Douluo with weaker poison resistance, particularly Tool Martial Soul users 87.

Equipment / Items

  • 50,000-year Medusa Skull — His only Soul Bone at the time of Qi Dao’s fifth-ring absorption; provides Medusa’s Gaze 99 142.
  • Two additional Soul Bones — Absorption raises him to Level 96. During the preceding herb-exchange arrangement, Spirit Hall supplies Qian Renxue with 60,000-year and 20,000-year poison-attribute bones 146 155.
  • Tang Hao’s torso Soul Bone — Selects this roughly 50,000-year bone after Tang Hao’s defeat. It lacks a poison attribute; he expects its absorption to save years of cultivation, but not immediately raise him to Level 97 160.
  • Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well herb garden — Holds Immortal Herbs, poisonous plants, and other rare medicines. Its opposing spring energies previously suppressed his poison backlash 51 55 163.
  • Earth Dragon Golden Melon seeds — Receives the seeds after Dugu Yan consumes the fruit, preserving them for future generations 55 56.

Relationships

  • Dugu Yan — Granddaughter and only surviving family member. He prioritizes her safety, supports her cultivation, and encourages her to pursue Qi Dao 50 55 56 90 98.
  • Qi Dao — Friend across generations, benefactor, and protected junior. Qi Dao helps resolve his poisoning and introduces Soul Core cultivation; Dugu Bo supplies rare resources, hunting assistance, and protection 50 55 80 85 98.
  • Chrysanthemum Douluo / Yue Guan — Long-standing rival whose failed recruitment attempt began their feud. Dugu Bo eventually defeats him, but neither treats the rivalry as a fight to the death 92 93 96.
  • Ghost Douluo / Gui Mei — Chrysanthemum’s close companion. Dugu Bo avoids confronting both simultaneously and ends the rematch before Ghost can intervene 94 96.
  • Qian Renxue / Xue Qinghe — Hunting ally and trading partner. He keeps her identity secret, but worries that she could become Dugu Yan’s romantic rival 137 146.
  • Prince Xue Xing — Established friend; their connection is one of Dugu Bo’s few publicly known political ties before joining Heaven Dou Academy 86 137.
  • Tang Hao — Threat to Qi Dao whom Dugu Bo proposes eliminating. Dugu Bo later receives his torso Soul Bone 85 157 160.
  • Snake Lance and Porcupinefish Douluo — Hunting partners who coordinate their attacks with his control skills against the forest beast kings 137 142.
  • Xiao Wu — Poisons her on Qi Dao’s instructions, then cures her after the Titan Giant Ape’s sacrifice 142 144.

Strategic Influence

  • His wide-area poison threatens entire factions even when their Titled Douluo can withstand it. This deters powerful groups from coercing Dugu Yan over her Martial Soul evolution 56.
  • Both the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan and Xue Beng view a relationship with Dugu Yan as a route to securing his support 56 69.
  • After his victory over Chrysanthemum Douluo, Xue Qinghe judges his strategic importance to the continent’s balance of power comparable to that of the Level 98 Golden Crocodile Douluo 98.
  • He generally refuses major factions’ requests to obtain his medicinal herbs, while making a specific exchange agreement with Qian Renxue 146 170.
