Unidentified soul transformation 324 Sune’s Kiss of Fire caused a “golden shell” around her soul to crack, exposing crimson light and producing effects Ailei could not yet identify.

Background

Ailei was born into House Stelmane, one of Baldur’s Gate’s four great ducal families. Her mother, Duchess Belynne Stelmane, attributed Ailei’s unusual golden hair to Lathander’s blessing and raised her in the Lord of Dawn’s faith despite its limited political influence in Baldur’s Gate. At twelve, Ailei won both mounted-lance and single-sword championships at the Greengrass festival, then received a public blessing of golden light from Lathander. Her strength subsequently grew rapidly. 1 120

By eighteen, Ailei was recognized as Baldur’s Gate’s outstanding young noblewoman, a powerful Eldritch Knight, and House Stelmane’s next heir. Her capture by the Shattered Tooth goblin tribe drew enormous attention: Duchess Stelmane offered ten thousand gold coins, rare magical equipment, and—if conditions allowed—marriage to Ailei as part of the reward. 1

The capture was part of a mind flayer plot. While undertaking Lathander’s trial in Cloakwood Forest, Ailei found an amber relic containing Lathander’s Blood before falling into a mind flayer trap. The relic helped her escape just before tadpole implantation. Teleporting away, she fell into the Chionthar River, lost her armor and sword, and became afflicted by a hag’s curse before finding refuge in an abandoned underground structure near Berry Village. 46 87 89

While hiding, Ailei survived with supplies brought by Alisa and Bor. She limited their visits to keep them from attracting danger, yet treated them as younger siblings and remained concerned for their safety. When undead emerged from the ruins, she fought them despite being weakened and was later rescued by Marvin Rodhart. 89 90 96

Appearance

Ailei is renowned for her beauty as much as her battlefield presence. Her brilliant golden hair is repeatedly associated with dawn and Lathander’s favor, while her usual bearing is described as poised, valiant, and distinctly noble. 81 120 288

  • Brilliant golden hair, unusual within House Stelmane. 120
  • Frequently wears full plate armor bearing Lathander’s imagery. 87
  • Rides the pure-white unicorn Daisy. 146 289
  • Combines aristocratic composure with the physical discipline of a frontline knight. 288 290

Personality

Ailei is compassionate but not naïve. During her hiding period, she protected Alisa and Bor by minimizing their involvement despite desperately needing supplies and information. She later prioritized destroying Auntie Ethel because the hag posed an immediate danger to the siblings. 89 96

Her noble education gives her considerable political judgment. At the emergency council, she countered Duchess Vanthampur’s proposals, advocated hiring dragons against the mind flayers, and helped secure funding for Baldur’s Gate’s defense. She also recognized Lorroakan’s courtship as a political maneuver and used his vanity to gather information about his plans for Ramazith’s Tower. 124 125 290

Though she is deeply devoted to Lathander, Ailei does not blindly accept divine purpose. She questions why the Lord of Dawn favors her without giving her a clear path, and later confronts the possibility that her own origins may be tied to fiends. Ultimately, she resolves to define herself through her choices rather than bloodline. 120 330 331

Abilities & Skills

Eldritch Knight Training

Ailei blends martial discipline with arcane spellcasting, allowing her to fight as both a heavily armored knight and a mobile battlefield mage.

  • Cast second-circle spells by age eighteen and possessed War Magic by at least level 7. 1
  • Uses mobility magic such as Misty Step, Thunder Step, and Expeditious Retreat to evade encirclement and control engagement distance. 97 147 314
  • Uses offensive magic including Booming Blade and Lightning Bolt. 314
  • Has used Haste to sustain an exceptionally rapid four-strikes-per-second assault. 147
  • Is capable of fighting with a Lathander-blessed sword and a second longsword simultaneously. 147 314

Weapon Bond

Ailei has magically bonded with both of her longswords through her Eldritch Knight training.

  • Cannot be disarmed of bonded weapons while they remain on the same plane. 314
  • Can recall a thrown or separated weapon with a simple gesture. 314
  • Uses this bond to throw her swords with dagger-like precision, then immediately retrieve them. 314

Ailei can channel the power of Lathander’s Blood despite not being identified as a conventional Chosen of the god. 314

  • The relic originally enabled her escape from mind flayer captivity. 89
  • Can use its radiance to weaken demons and counter fiendish forces. 315
  • Used Lathander’s Blood to protect the unconscious Eli Twin Suns from Cyric’s mental assault. 314

  • Has been tasked with locating a third drop of Lathander’s Blood, believed to be in Lamordia within the Shadowfell. 288

Mental Fortitude and Fiendish Presence

Ailei resisted Soren Carl’s lies and psychic assaults during the Dark Sun Truth incident. Her presence also caused a nalfeshnee to collapse in terror and kneel before her, an effect later linked to her apparent succubus-queen lineage. 315 331

  • Her bloodline did not visibly manifest throughout her childhood and has not caused her to register as evil under alignment-detection magic. 330 331
  • Her dreams include Malcanthet’s palace, where powerful succubi addressed her as “little sister.” 330 331
  • She remains able to wield holy power without apparent harm. 330

Leadership and Strategy

Ailei is an accomplished commander and political representative.

  • Led Flaming Fist cavalry in pursuit of fleeing mind flayer forces and helped rout the siege of Rivington. 146

Story Role / Major Arcs

Capture and Escape

Ailei’s disappearance launches the novel’s original central rescue mission. Her capture by mind flayer-controlled goblins is revealed to be more than a simple kidnapping, as multiple factions—including mind flayers, hags, and Gortash—search for her after her escape. 1 46

Berry Village and the Hag Hunt

After surviving alone beneath an abandoned village, Ailei is rescued by Marvin and becomes his partner in countering Auntie Ethel. Their shared concern for Alisa and Bor turns the hag into their immediate priority, culminating in the hag coven’s defeat and the division of its treasure. 89 96 119

Defense of Baldur’s Gate

Ailei returns to Baldur’s Gate, navigates the city’s emergency council, and supports Marvin’s dragon-hiring strategy against the mind flayer nautiloid. She later leads the Flaming Fist cavalry to victory, restoring her public reputation as a heroic knight. 124 125 146

Path Opening and Lathander’s Blood

During the city’s defense, Ailei opens her Path and reveals combat ability far beyond her previous level. Afterward, she investigates further drops of Lathander’s Blood, believing the third relic may lie in the Shadowfell. 147 148 288

Demon Assault and Chosen Alliance

When Cyric’s servants and Graz’zt’s demons attack Baldur’s Gate, Ailei holds off two nalfeshnees, saves Eli, resists psychic manipulation, and kills both judgment demons. She later works to unite fellow Chosen against Gargauth. 314 315 317 322

Bloodline Revelation

Ailei’s dreams, her effect on demons, and Lady Belin’s account of Ailei’s father reveal that she may descend directly from Malcanthet. Rather than let this revelation define her, Ailei accepts that free will—not origin—will determine her future. 330 331

Notable Quotes

“I’m not going to my death. I’m only buying time. Give Marvin a little more time, and he’ll break this formation.” 314

“In this world, most creatures have their fates fixed from birth due to their race, alignment, family, and other reasons. It is difficult for them to begin an entirely new journey in life. But some people are exceptions. Through free will, they can rewrite the course of their own destinies.” 331
