Background / History

Early life

Born to an ordinary cobbler family, Enver Flymm was sold by his parents to a warlock loyal to Raphael before he was ten. He discarded his birth surname for “Gortash,” an Infernal name meaning “authority, rule, and power,” and spent ten years imprisoned in Raphael’s House of Hope before escaping back to the Prime Material Plane. 213

Using skills acquired in Hell, personal charm, and ruthless opportunism, Gortash secured the backing of a wealthy noble widow, entered Baldur’s Gate’s arms trade, and built influence through smuggling. His methods included fraud, extortion, intimidation, and bribery. 169 213 248

Rise to nobility

Gortash bought an Upper City house in Manorborn for 120,000 gold pieces, fulfilling a prerequisite for entry into Baldur’s Gate’s nobility. He secured noble status while still in his thirties, an ascent High Priest Luolian considered proof of exceptional ability. 169

Publicly, Gortash became a Church of Gond business partner and a rising political figure. Privately, he controlled roughly thirty percent of Baldur’s Gate’s arms-smuggling trade and maintained ties to devils, Bane worshippers, and the mind flayers’ schemes. 169 213

His ruthlessness earned Bane’s favor, making him the god of tyranny’s Chosen. 213

Wartime expansion

As the war against Gargauth drew key Church of Gond personnel away from Baldur’s Gate, Gortash exploited the resulting vacuum through bribery, corruption, coercion, assassination, and political maneuvering. He seized control of the Gond firearms arsenal near Grey Harbour in Bloomridge and converted it into a secret stronghold for Bane worshippers. 392 403

He also brought Gond engineers and technicians under his influence, including Hablin, High Priest Luolian’s foremost student and the chief designer of the Steel Defender project. Gortash intended to combine construct design with forbidden psionic and necromantic technologies to mass-produce forces loyal to him alone. 379 392 403

Appearance

Gortash presents himself as a fashionable, lavishly dressed nobleman. He is described as a greasy middle-aged man who still retains traces of his earlier handsomeness and tries to preserve his appeal through elaborate clothing and hairstyle. 169 219

  • Wears expensive, carefully curated noble attire. 219
  • Bears a badge marked with Bane’s black handprint. 213
  • Wears a signet ring identifying him as an earl of Baldur’s Gate. 404
  • Cultivates a polished, gallant manner when addressing women and political peers. 169 219

Personality

Gortash is intensely ambitious, treating authority as both his defining goal and the measure of his worth. His self-image is built around having escaped poverty and Hell to become a nobleman, and he expects to eventually become Grand Duke of Baldur’s Gate and rule beyond it in Bane’s name. 213 229

He is calculating rather than blindly aggressive. When Marvin Rodhart’s strength becomes undeniable, Gortash revises his plans from treating him as a disposable pawn to seeking an alliance—or at minimum preserving neutrality until a decisive opportunity emerges. 219 222 264

His pragmatism is inseparable from self-preservation. During the struggle over Karsus’s Crown, Gortash abandons the artifact to escape an imminent attack, judging his own life more valuable than the Absolute plan. 278

Gortash’s confidence grows into open arrogance when he believes the Baldur’s Gate Alliance has been defeated and his control over Gond’s industrial assets gives him the upper hand. He attempts to force Marvin into fealty, only to become deferential again after Marvin turns Frank Tristen into leverage against him. 403 404

He considers his appearance, charm, and sexuality practical resources for political advancement, regarding his past as a kept man not as a humiliation but as evidence of his willingness to use every available advantage. 274

Abilities & Skills

Political Influence and Command

Gortash combines commercial wealth, private military force, public image management, and Bane’s hierarchical cult structure to build power.

  • Controls a major share of Baldur’s Gate’s arms-smuggling trade. 213
  • Fields approximately 300 private guards, alarming Grand Duke Ravengard. 228
  • Commands Bane’s Black Hands and benefits from the near-unconditional obedience of Bane’s clergy and followers. 277 278
  • Expands influence through bribery, coercion, business exchanges, charitable spending, and public appearances. 248
  • Uses the wartime disorder surrounding Gargauth’s invasion to increase his influence in Baldur’s Gate’s council and infiltrate the Church of Gond. 392 403
  • Seized a Gond firearms arsenal and converted it into a secret Bane stronghold staffed by loyal Black Hands and compromised Gond personnel. 403

Intrigue and Negotiation

Gortash is an adept manipulator who prefers agreements, proxies, and political leverage to open conflict.

  • Secured the Church of Gond’s infernal-arms production contract as a private contractor, allowing the church to distance itself from the risks of trading with Zariel. 169
  • Planned to exploit the fall of the Vanthampur Family to claim political space and present himself as Baldur’s Gate’s savior. 219 229
  • Negotiated with Raphael, Viconia, Ketheric Thorm’s faction, and Marvin in pursuit of Karsus’s Crown and the Netherstones. 234 274 284 287
  • Publicly showed little personal combat ability, instead relying on guards, Bane worshippers, security measures, and stronger allies. 250
  • Attempts to manipulate Marvin into becoming his subordinate by withholding critical Mythallar Core components, but is forced into an equal trade after Marvin gains control of Frank Tristen. 404

Industrial and Construct Development

Gortash treats technological control as the military foundation of his planned rule.

  • Managed the Church of Gond’s firearms factory and held responsibility for musket production for Zariel’s contract. 208
  • Purchased dangerous Mind Flayer-derived remote psionic-control research from Hablin after the Church of Gond halted the project over safety concerns. 219 309
  • Pursues Brain in a Jar production technology from Viktra Mordenheim to combine biological control systems with Steel Defender design. 379 380 403
  • Pressures Hablin to develop Steel Defenders that can be mass-produced and controlled as Gortash’s private military force. 403
  • Suffers a significant setback when Frank Tristen is returned without the three brains Balthazar intended to reverse-engineer. 404

Security and Logistics

  • Built an Upper City estate protected by permanent anti-eavesdropping, anti-scrying, and divination-resistant wards. 213
  • Protected Karsus’s Crown in a heavily warded basement vault accessed by password. 213 235
  • Operated the Black Iron Fist, a fast sailing vessel fitted with a magical blower device. 276
  • His magical protections were nevertheless bypassed by Marvin’s Heavy Magic-enhanced Dispel Magic. 235
  • Used an ostensibly ordinary iron-weapons shipment and an excessive magical escort to conceal the Crown’s intended transport to Moonrise Towers. 275
  • Maintains guards at strategic locations in the High House of Wonders and deploys both open and covert watchers against enemies. 404

Assets and Equipment

  • Karsus’s Crown — Secretly held in his estate vault; later transported toward Moonrise Towers, lost during Viconia’s ambush, and recovered by Balthazar for Gortash. 213 275 278 284
  • Indigo Netherstone — Sought as one of the three control permissions for Karsus’s Crown; Gortash negotiates with Marvin to obtain another Netherstone in exchange for Titansteel. 274 287 288
  • Sharkskin boots — Activated with a command word to produce smoke and teleport Gortash away from immediate danger. 278
  • The Black Iron Fist — A magical sailing ship capable of maintaining its heading with created wind, even after being damaged. 276 278
  • Titansteel collection — Possessed rare Netherese Titansteel, which he agreed to trade to Marvin for a Netherstone. 287 288
  • Grey Harbour firearms arsenal — A former Gond arsenal in Bloomridge that Gortash captures and turns into a Bane cult stronghold and prospective Steel Defender production facility. 403
  • Frank Tristen — A construct recovered from the Shadowfell for its Brain in a Jar technology; although Gortash regains its body from Marvin, its three brains are removed through illusion and the desired technology remains unavailable. 403 404

Relationships

  • Bane — Divine patron. Gortash is Bane’s Chosen and pursues a future in which Bane’s tyranny dominates the Sword Coast. 213 234
  • Raphael — Former captor and later uneasy collaborator. Raphael initially sought to reclaim Gortash as a servant, but Bane’s backing forced him into cooperation; both seek to use the other in the struggle for Karsus’s Crown. 213 234 235
  • Marvin Rodhart — Political rival and potential ally turned open adversary. Gortash repeatedly seeks Marvin’s cooperation and Netherstone, but avoids direct conflict after recognizing Marvin’s strength; later, he tries unsuccessfully to force Marvin’s submission and is outmaneuvered in the trade for Frank Tristen. 222 234 264 287 404
  • Dark Urge — Allied through the Dead Three’s plans, though they disagree sharply on murder: Gortash prefers controlled, politically useful violence, while Dark Urge views killing as his purpose. The two later escape the Shadowfell together after a catastrophic encounter with Gargauth’s black cloud. 273 274 403
  • Viconia DeVir — A potential intelligence and political partner after the Gray Witch’s fall. Viconia’s Shar worshippers later ambush Gortash’s crown shipment. 274 277 278
  • The Gray Witch — Connected through Bane and Raphael’s anti-Marvin alliance. Gortash supplied Bane worshippers for her planned ambush but declined to personally join the attack. 234 264
  • High Priest Luolian — Chose Gortash as the Church of Gond’s contractor for arms exports to Zariel. Gortash later exploits Luolian’s wartime absence to expand his control over the church’s personnel and industrial assets. 169 392 403
  • Hablin — A Gond engineer whose dangerous psionic research Gortash purchased. Gortash later coerces him into working on Steel Defender and Brain in a Jar integration at the captured arsenal, though Hablin covertly assists Marvin. 219 309 403 404
  • Ketheric Thorm and Balthazar — Associates in the Absolute plan; Balthazar recovers Karsus’s Crown and returns it to Gortash after the Reithwin conflict. Balthazar later reprimands Gortash for underestimating Marvin and collaborates with him on Brain in a Jar research. 281 284 403 404
  • Viktra Mordenheim — Her Brain in a Jar production technology is central to Gortash’s plan to gain control of Steel Defenders. 379 380

Story Role / Major Arcs

Infernal arms contract

Luolian selects Gortash to handle the Church of Gond’s firearms-production deal with Zariel, allowing the church to profit while limiting its direct exposure to infernal dealings. This contract establishes Gortash as a major commercial force with access to infernal iron and Church of Gond connections. 169 219

Karsus’s Crown and the Absolute

Gortash secretly possesses Karsus’s Crown and learns from Raphael that it requires three Netherstones for full control. He agrees to pursue the Absolute plan, hoping it will restore the Dead Three and elevate him into a ruler worthy of Bane. 213 234

Vanthampur Family collapse

Gortash uses the Dragon Cult crisis and the Vanthampur Family’s downfall to advance his political standing. After Duchess Vanthampur’s death, he proposes an apparently impartial process to seal her family’s assets, compensate victims, and distribute the remainder—strengthening his reputation while positioning himself for higher office. 219 229

Crown transfer to Moonrise Towers

After realizing his vault is no longer secure, Gortash moves Karsus’s Crown by nonmagical transport aboard the Black Iron Fist. Viconia turns the Chionthar River into a Shadowfell passage, trapping the ship in an ambush; Gortash escapes by throwing the crown’s box to an attacker and teleporting away. 275 277 278

Netherstone negotiation

Desperate to advance the Absolute plan, Gortash repeatedly approaches Marvin to buy a Netherstone. He ultimately agrees to exchange his Titansteel for it, unaware that Marvin intends to tamper with the gem before the trade. 273 287 288

Shadowfell retreat

Gortash joins Balthazar and Dark Urge in the Shadowfell, where the group attempts to capture wandering souls. After an inexplicable black cloud nearly annihilates them, Gortash decisively abandons the operation and escapes with the surviving members of the force to Baldur’s Gate. 403

Seizure of Gond’s industrial assets

With Baldur’s Gate’s leaders and many senior Gond personnel occupied by the war against Gargauth, Gortash captures the Grey Harbour firearms arsenal and bends Church of Gond engineers to his service. He plans to use psionic control and Brain in a Jar technology to produce Steel Defenders as the armed basis for his seizure of the city. 379 392 403

Failed coercion of Marvin

Believing Gargauth has defeated the Baldur’s Gate Alliance, Gortash attempts to use his control of Mythallar Core components to force Marvin to swear fealty and recognize him as Baldur’s Gate’s new ruler. Marvin instead uses Frank Tristen as bargaining leverage, forcing Gortash into a fair trade before secretly depriving Balthazar of the construct’s three brains. 404
