| Demigodhood | 179 202 324 | After killing and absorbing the demon lord Astaroth's power, Gargauth gained Abyssal power and rose from archdevil to demigod. His secret art allows him to devour divine and quasi-divine power. |
Background / History
Gargauth was once the tenth archduke of the Nine Hells. He strengthened himself by slaughtering devils of his own kind, making him intolerable even to Hell; he was banished and wandered the planes thereafter. 175
At some point, Gargauth slew the demon lord Astaroth and absorbed his power. The union of devilish and Abyssal essence made him stronger and granted him a trace of divinity, but also destabilized his nature and greatly intensified his inherent weakness to silver. 179 202
Gargauth became trapped within the celestial Shield of the Hidden Lord for centuries or millennia. The shield served simultaneously as his prison and protection, but he gradually corrupted it from within and used it to contact, tempt, and empower mortals. 175 179 202
Through the shield, Gargauth built the Knights of the Shield into a covert network embedded among Western Faerûn's nobility. Initiates received magical marks that quietly undermined their free will and guided their behavior through subconscious suggestion. 237 328
Appearance
Gargauth commonly manifests through the Shield of the Hidden Lord: a silver-white shield set with gemstones and bearing a twisted, roaring evil face. His projections can alternate between a handsome noble disguise and a hideous true form. 295 336
- A beastlike, roaring face appears at the center of the shield. 295 299
- His possession of mortals is marked by harsh, hellish speech and glowing red eyes. 297
- His projections radiate the oppressive presence of a demigod. 336
Personality
Gargauth is ambitious, contemptuous, and intensely manipulative. He treats mortals as expendable servants, regards the Chosen as resources for his ascension, and reacts to failure with psychic rage directed at his followers. 299 336
He prefers corrupting influential nobles and spellcasters rather than ruling openly. The Knights of the Shield allow him to influence powerful institutions while concealing the extent of his control. 237 328
Abilities & Skills
Mental Domination and Corruption
Gargauth brands Knights of the Shield initiates through the Shield of the Hidden Lord, compromising their autonomy and steering their actions without their awareness. 237
- Can possess devoted servants directly, as seen with Baron Hunel. 297
- Projects overwhelming psychic pressure capable of breaking weaker-willed followers. 299
- Tempts targets with power, immortality, influence, or personal desire. 295 296
- His magical marks can revive after periods of dormancy, reclaiming members previously freed from another controller. 237
Fiendish Blessings
Gargauth grants his servants substantial magical enhancement through prayers directed at the shield. 297
- Can enhance a servant's wisdom, senses, and spellcasting capacity. 297
- Elevated Novak into a seventh-circle spellcaster and forced open Novak's Path, Godbearer. 336
- His blessings allowed Baldi to fight above his ordinary capabilities. 297 298
- The power he grants is tied to servitude and does not preserve the recipient's independence. 336
Devouring Divine Power
Gargauth possesses a secret art capable of devouring divine and quasi-divine power, the means by which he rose to demigodhood after consuming Astaroth's power. 324
- Seeks to consume Chosen after isolating them from their deities. 336
- Consuming even one Chosen would strengthen him enough to accelerate his escape from the shield. 336
- Knowledge of this art is considered dangerous enough to motivate gods, fiends, and Chosen to seek Gargauth's death. 324 327 328
Planar and Spatial Schemes
Gargauth is associated with large-scale planar rituals intended to create a realm suitable for his ascension.
- Provided Zariel the method for creating Enlightenment Water, a mixture of Styx water and planar essence from seven evil planes. 175
- Received from Zariel a method to drag an entire city into the Lower Planes, intending to pull Baldur's Gate into Gehenna and make it his divine realm. 175
- Later constructed five magical pillars in the Shadowfell to exchange a hundred-mile region around his tower with its Shadowfell counterpart. 335 336
- His Shadowfell plan depends on Shar's support, allowing him to isolate and consume Chosen on hostile ground. 336 338
Fiendish Traits and Vulnerabilities
Gargauth retains the nature and weaknesses of a devil despite his demigodhood.
- Silver vulnerability — Silver is devastatingly effective against him; Astaroth's Abyssal power amplified this weakness. 202
- Protection from projectiles — He enchanted himself with Protection from Arrows after silver coins nearly killed him in an earlier battle. 202
- Demonic summoning — He cannot summon lesser devils, but can temporarily summon demons; such demons soon turn against him. 202
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Shield of the Hidden Lord — A celestial shield that imprisons Gargauth while serving as the focus for his communication, corruption, and blessings. 175 202 297
- Knights of the Shield marks — Magical marks imposed on members during initiation, enabling long-term mental influence. 237
Relationships
- Astaroth — Demon lord slain by Gargauth; Gargauth absorbed his power and gained Abyssal energy, divinity, and a more severe silver weakness. 179 202 324
- Zariel — Shared knowledge with Gargauth: he provided the formula for Enlightenment Water, while Zariel provided the method to drag a city into the Lower Planes. 175
- Raphael — A temporary collaborator in the plot to ambush Marvin; their cooperation is pragmatic and marked by different objectives. 175 244
- Shar — Secret ally supporting Gargauth's Shadowfell-based ascension plan. 336 338
- Knights of the Shield — His primary mortal organization, built around magical marks, noble influence, and hidden control. 237 328
- Baron Hunel — Fanatical servant fully possessed by Gargauth during the plot against Freya and Baldur's Gate. 295 297
- Freya — Intended sacrifice whose divine power was meant to fuel Gargauth's ascension; she rejected his temptation and escaped. 296 297
- Novak — Former Scribes Guild mage transformed into Gargauth's strongest tower servant and bearer of the Godbearer Path. 336
- Marvin Rodhart — Principal opponent who exposes Gargauth's schemes, organizes an alliance against him, and investigates his Shadowfell preparations. 324 327 335
Story Role / Major Arcs
Arcane Tower Conflict
Gargauth's Astaroth-enhanced power is exploited during the struggle over the Arcane Tower. Amrik weakens him with a silver bolt, causing the shield's protection to fail and leaving Gargauth vulnerable to defeat. 202
Return of the Knights of the Shield
As Gargauth recovers, the magical marks on Knights of the Shield members revive. His influence reasserts itself over servants previously controlled by the Emperor, including Owen Andel. 237
Hunel Manor Plot
Gargauth uses Baron Hunel, Baldi, and the Knights of the Shield to capture Freya, extract her divine power, and prepare a ritual to drag Baldur's Gate into Gehenna. Freya and Jaheira escape, exposing the conspiracy before the plan can be completed. 295 297 299
Chosen Alliance
Intelligence concerning Gargauth's divine-devouring art gives Marvin the leverage needed to unite rival Chosen and factions against him. The resulting alliance includes forces from Candlekeep, Emerald Grove, the Church of Mystra, and the Four Gods of Fury. 324 328
Shadowfell Ascension Scheme
After his Baldur's Gate plan fails, Gargauth shifts to a larger strategy: use five pillars and Shar's support to exchange the territory around his tower with the Shadowfell. There, he intends to weaken, defeat, and devour the Chosen one by one. 335 336 338

“Fools! You bunch of fools! To support you worthless slaves, I invested enormous resources and effort, and in the end, you tell me that you accomplished nothing?” 299
