Background / History
Raphael is the son of Mephistopheles, Archduke of Cania and ruler of the eighth layer of Hell. His father’s contempt and harsh treatment fostered Raphael’s hatred and defiance; he uses the authority and resources granted by Mephistopheles to pursue plans that would undermine him. Raphael resides in the House of Hope and seeks to become the greatest spellcaster in the Nine Hells. 144 191 213
He is deeply interested in the Material Plane, where he personally toys with mortals, cultivates corrupt ambitions, and intends to harvest the resulting souls. His arrangement with Duchess Thalamra Vanthampur was designed to raise her to power in Baldur’s Gate, allowing her soul to become increasingly evil before he claimed it. 162
Raphael’s long-term ambition centers on [Karsus's Crown]. He learned that its three separated Netherstones could control the crown’s wearer and devised the “Absolute” plan: an elder brain would wear the crown and gather faith as a false god, while the Netherstones would control it. Raphael ultimately intended to use Titansteel to evolve Heavy Magic into Super Heavy Magic, seize control of both crown and Netherstones, and turn their holders into his puppets. 213 235
Appearance
Raphael presents himself as an impeccably dressed noble spellcaster, favoring an old-fashioned royal-court style even while in Hell. 144
- Wears a dark-patterned brocade vest with gold trim, a red shirt embroidered in gold, and a white ruffled noble collar. 144
- Uses the female identity Raphaela, appearing as a tall, elegant noblewoman in a black, red, and gold gown. 241
- His true ascended form is a twelve-foot fiend wreathed in hellfire, with slanted horns, three yellow eyes, fangs, wings, bone spurs, and a spine of Infernal flame. 247
- Emits a fiery-red hellfire aura detectable through magic. 213
Personality
Raphael is theatrical, aristocratic, and intensely narcissistic. He considers himself the most beautiful being in the world in either male or female form, viewing even Zariel’s attendant Ahli and the Gray Witch through a lens of personal superiority. 145 241
He is a patient manipulator who favors bargains, proxy agents, intelligence networks, and long-term corruption over open force. He readily offers power or resources to mortals while privately treating every alliance as a future opportunity for betrayal. 162 201 241
Despite his cunning, Raphael repeatedly underestimates Marvin Rodhart. He dismisses Marvin as a mere fifth-circle mage even while investing heavily in ambush preparations, and his overconfidence contributes to the collapse of his alliance with the Knights of the Shield. 145 244 247
Abilities & Skills
Infernal Magic
Raphael is a powerful devil spellcaster with a distinctive hellfire aura and access to divination, enchantment, transmutation, and planar magic. 213 241 246
- Casts fourth-circle [Locate Creature] to track Marvin within Owen Andel’s manor. 246
- Uses [Charm Person] to force his way through the thieves’ guild’s checkpoints. 241
- Teleports between Hell and the Material Plane using infernal portals. 144 241
- His magic is subject to interference; residual radiant energy prevented him from tracking Marvin after Azak’s death. 144
[Raphael's Perfect Female Body]
Raphael’s self-created eighth-circle transmutation spell transforms him into the female persona Raphaela. 247
- Enables a complete female physical disguise while he operates in Baldur’s Gate. 241
- Was dispelled by Marvin’s enhanced [Dispel Magic], exposing Raphael to Gargauth and the Knights of the Shield. 246 247
- Its exposure demonstrates the danger of relying on concealed identities within unstable alliances. 246 248
[Raphael's Soul Worm]
A custom surveillance spell that converts a soul contained in a soul coin into an incorporeal infernal worm attached to a target. 244
- Lets Raphael receive intelligence through sensory sharing with the worm’s host. 244
- Was used to eavesdrop on Nishkaya’s conversation with Marvin and discover Marvin’s plan to kill Owen Andel. 244
- Requires a soul coin as material and sixty-six minutes for the worm to mature. 244
Devil Ascension
When threatened by Gargauth’s controlled Knights of the Shield, Raphael invoked “Devil Ascension” and assumed his monstrous true form. 247
- Grants overwhelming physical and infernal combat power against mortal opponents. 247
- Allowed him to survive and defeat Gargauth’s minions despite their magical enhancements. 247
- Greatly weakens him afterward and requires a prolonged recovery period. 247 248
Strategic Manipulation
Raphael builds influence through contracts, material incentives, secrets, and carefully chosen proxies rather than loyalty. 162 235 241
- Granted Amrik Vanthampur warlock powers and ordered him to betray Hunel VII during the struggle for Linoer’s soul crystal. 162 201
- Offered the thieves’ guild access to the Knights of the Shield’s weapons-smuggling network and cheap infernal iron in exchange for abandoning Marvin. 241 242
- Prepared [As If Before the Nine Hells] and [Dimensional Lock] magic circles to weaken Marvin and deny teleportation during an ambush. 244
- Intended to dispose of the Knights of the Shield after obtaining Ansur’s legacy and the Netherstones. 241

- Azak — Loyal Bone Devil servant whose death at Marvin’s hands brought Raphael directly into conflict with Marvin. 144
- Helsik — Devil broker hired to identify Marvin and secure new Material Plane agents. 144
Story Role / Major Arcs
Expansion into Baldur’s Gate
Raphael gained access to the Knights of the Shield and attempted to seize the forces controlled by Duchess Stelmane. After Marvin killed Azak and Raphael’s other agents were lost, Raphael began seeking Marvin’s identity while recruiting the Vanthampur Family as a new intelligence network. 143 144
The Vanthampurs later paid Raphael one hundred souls after their failed assault on Baldur’s Gate. He strengthened Amrik as a warlock, gave the family Knights of the Shield support, and sought to claim the Arcane Tower. 157 162
Betrayal at the Arcane Tower
Raphael used Amrik to betray Gargauth’s puppet Hunel VII during the battle for Linoer’s soul crystal and Silver Fire. His objective was to weaken Mephistopheles through Gargauth while claiming Silver Fire for himself. 201
The betrayal damaged Raphael’s standing among the Knights of the Shield and intensified Gargauth’s desire for revenge. 201 247
The Absolute and Netherstone Hunt
After Mephistopheles punished him over the theft of [Karsus's Crown], Raphael proved he had no knowledge of the theft but was sent back toward Baldur’s Gate. He then recruited Gortash into the Absolute plan, disclosed the importance of the three Netherstones, and pursued Ansur’s bronze dragon legacy. 210 213
Raphael assembled a three-way alliance with the Gray Witch and Dragon Cult against Marvin, offering Gortash Netherstones in exchange for Titansteel. 234 235
War Against Marvin
To prevent Marvin from finding Ansur’s legacy first, Raphael attempted to sever Marvin’s ties to the thieves’ guild, recruited the Knights of the Shield, and installed magical surveillance on Nishkaya. 239 241 244
His ambush at Owen Andel’s manor failed. Marvin exposed Raphaela’s identity, escaped through [Anchor Teleportation], and turned Gargauth’s servants against Raphael. Raphael survived only by using Devil Ascension, sustaining injuries that left him unable to play a decisive role in the conflict. 246 247 248
Zariel’s Punishment
After Raphael continued interfering with Marvin and Baldur’s Gate despite Zariel’s warning, Zariel dragged him to Avernus and subjected him to a prolonged beating with Matalotok. His regenerative abilities kept him alive, but he swore not to trouble Marvin again and redirected his attention toward the remaining Netherstones. 263 264
