Cultivation Framework

Dao Foundation follows the nine layers of Qi Ingestion. Forging one is not merely an increase in True Qi: it creates an individual “immortal foundation” whose mysteries shape the cultivator’s future path toward the Purple Mansion 15 55.

Dao Foundation cultivators are divided into early, middle, and late stages. Advancement depends on both mana and the continued development of the foundation’s inherent mysteries 85.

Establishment Methods

• Ancient method — attaining the Dao to forge the foundation: A cultivator comprehends the Great Dao and condenses a foundation naturally from their own cultivation. This produces mysteries suited to the individual but is difficult to enter and slow to advance, causing it to fall out of common use 78.
• External-object method: A ninth-layer Qi Ingestion cultivator uses spiritual items specifically compatible with their natal nature to aid the breakthrough 78.
• Dao Foundation Pills: Specialized pills can provide Dao Foundation efficacy and protect a Qi Ingestion cultivator’s meridians. Fang Qing refined three pills with affinities toward [Ji Water] and [Zhen Water] from eight Foundation Establishment Pills 85.
• Human Pill method: Some cultivators use another cultivator’s cultivation and life force as breakthrough material. This method is widespread in Ancient Shu but is associated with dangerous and coercive practices 55 78.

Risks

Forging a Dao Foundation is extremely dangerous for unaffiliated cultivators. Even after reaching ninth-layer perfection and finding a compatible spiritual item, a rogue cultivator may face “nine deaths for one life”; failure can result in Dao transformation 55.

A cultivator can also suffer Dao transformation later if their cultivation becomes unstable or if they fail to control a powerful technique or divine ability 302 425.

Characteristics

• A Dao Foundation’s mysteries differ greatly according to the cultivator’s lineage, Dao practice, and natal alignment; converting between foundations can reveal entirely different abilities 143.
• An accomplished Dao Foundation is treated as comparable to a pseudo-divine ability, making its holder far more formidable than an ordinary Qi Ingestion cultivator 69.
• Dao Foundation spiritual items and breakthrough resources are scarce, particularly for independent cultivators without sect or clan support 123.
• In Ancient Shu, Dao Foundation cultivators hold major social authority. They can determine the fate of lesser factions, while Qi Ingestion cultivators are often viewed as barely having entered the mystical path 167 355.

Comparison with the Qi Refinement Way

The Breath-Nourishing Dao and the Qi Refinement Way do not have a strict one-to-one realm correspondence 94.

• Fang Qing — Forged multiple Dao Foundations through the Dao-Born Pearl, including Longlasting Sweet Rain, Facing the Abyss, Sharp Edge Chapter, Yaolingxuan, and Wind-Approaching 85 143.
• Pi Xiuyuan — Early-stage Dao Foundation cultivator whose Shattering Edge foundation specializes in offense 76.
• Xu Hei — Promoted to Dao Foundation after receiving the position of Bright Son; later became a major figure in the Four Directions Merchant Association 157 171.
