Background / History
Sangji originally presided over Deathless Temple as master of the White Bone Way. His path to becoming a Dharma King depended on subduing a heterodox [Ji Water] cultivator—Fang Qing—whose evasion obstructed Sangji's destined number and delayed his breakthrough. 127
Fang Qing trapped Sangji in the Mystic Ice Skyveil Formation and overwhelmed him through formations, talisman treasures, the Sea-Transforming Pearl, and sonic attacks. Despite Sangji's resistance, Fang Qing shattered his spiritual defenses and forcibly converted him. 127 128
Following his conversion, Sangji became Fang Qing's most important agent within the Secret Treasury Domain. He provided intelligence, cultivation materials, scriptures, and political access while continuing to act publicly as a White Bone Way authority. 129 131 170
After a prolonged and precarious seclusion, Sangji attained Dharma Kingship. He was invested as the White Bone Dharma King, placed in charge of Buddhist affairs in Ancient Shu, and received the Bone Sarira as a Purple Palace Buddhist artifact. 165 170
Sangji later became entangled in the internal power struggle of the Temple of All Living Beings Without Form. Fang Qing's seizure of the Lord of the Charnel Forest's authority protected Sangji from being sacrificed, enabled his advancement to the middle Purple Palace stage, and ultimately positioned him to succeed Jiumoluo Jie as temple abbot. 341 343 420 422
In the Eight Cold Forest Buddha Lands, Sangji survived the dying Lord of the Charnel Forest and refined its [Female Earth] subordinate Position Seal. This gave him the yin-yang dual-body protector and elevated him to the White Bone Wisdom King. 476 477 481
Appearance
Sangji is most often depicted as an emaciated monk in a tiger-skin kasaya. Before his conversion, he had a fierce, vicious face; after attaining higher realms, he could appear youthful despite being skin and bones. 127 170
- Wears a tiger-skin kasaya made from the hide of a near-Purple Palace great demon and empowered with curse power. 127
- His White Bone Dharma manifestation bears skeletal imagery, a five-skull crown, multiple arms, and ritual implements. 128
- After refining the [Female Earth] Position Seal, he can assume the Lord of the Charnel Forest Dharma Form: a milky-white skeleton with one face, four arms, three red eyes, a skull crown, bone club, skull vessel, and golden treasure vase. 481
- In his stabilized yin-body form, he appears as a refined young man in a white robe marked with the Yin Body Dharma Aspect. 486
Personality
Before his conversion, Sangji was impatient, domineering, and fiercely invested in fulfilling his destined number. He regarded Fang Qing as an outsider to be subdued and openly demanded his submission in battle. 127
After conversion, he became intensely reverent toward Fang Qing, consistently addressing him as “Venerable One” and crediting his own achievements to Fang Qing's protection. His devotion is genuine in conduct, though it originates from the Esoteric Treasury conversion method rather than a freely chosen allegiance. 129 165
Sangji is also cautious and politically practical. He refused to enter Earth-Submerging Blessed Land after receiving a warning from his White Bone Heart, stating that he “never gambles.” 199 As a leader, he can be ruthless when necessary, ordering attacks, reincarnation, and large-scale military action without hesitation. 201 223 233
Abilities & Skills
White Bone Visualization
Sangji's foundational [Female Earth] divine ability and principal combat method.
- Manifests a white-bone dharma form connected to the Lord of the Charnel Forest. 128
- Its unrestrained divine power can kill ordinary people who inhale Sangji's breath and grievously wound Dao Foundation cultivators who look upon him. 165
- Can empower the Bone Sarira into a Great-Strength White-Bone God-Demon capable of assaulting Purple Palace formations. 227
- Supports the white-bone Dharma forms used after his refinement of the subordinate Position Seal. 481
Dust-Cleansing Karmic Affinity
A divine ability centered on cleansing karma, curses, and bodily contamination.
- Reached completion before Sangji advanced to the middle Purple Palace stage. 303 343
- Allows him to abandon a corrupted body and emerge in a new form, escaping otherwise lethal effects. 371
- Let him narrowly evade Demon Moon's All Things Beget Life, though he still required the Bone Sarira's assistance. 371
Death-Terror Aspect
Sangji's third divine ability and the basis for his late Purple Palace Great Dharma King status.
- Enables him to exist as if dead and approach ghosts, gods, darkness, and Great Terror Aspects without being devoured. 432
- Was cultivated through orthodox instruction from Fang Qing and prior empowerment that let Sangji experience the operation of multiple divine abilities in advance. 432
- Its manifestation causes Sangji's flesh to rot away, leaving him corpse-like during rituals. 432
[Female Earth] Position Seal and Yin-Yang Dual Body
After refining the subordinate [Female Earth] Position Seal, Sangji became the Lord of the Charnel Forest's successor in the White Bone Way.
- Possesses a yin-yang dual-body protector formed from the Lord of the Charnel Forest Dharma Form. 481
- Uses the yin body to command the yang body, reducing the original Lord of the Charnel Forest's influence over him. 481
- Attained Golden Core True Lord-level combat power, though he remains weaker than a true holder of a subordinate-position Golden Core. 481
- His Golden Core-level divine soul can resist Fang Qing's Great Possession Art to a degree. 481
Empowerment Link
Sangji remains bound through Fang Qing's conversion and the Dao-Born Pearl.
- Fang Qing can use Sangji as an anchor to observe events and communicate across realms. 200 238
- Fang Qing can descend into Sangji's body and temporarily lend him divine abilities or [Female Earth] Gold-nature power. 417 476
- Such borrowed strength does not fully belong to Sangji; forcing it beyond his own cultivation risks harming him. 417
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Tiger-Skin Kasaya — A cursed robe made from a near-Purple Palace great demon's hide and innumerable living souls; it can transform into a giant tiger demon when fueled by Sangji's essence blood. 127
- White Bone Dharma Bell — A Buddhist defensive artifact damaged by Fang Qing's Sea-Transforming Pearl. 127
- Bone Sarira — A Purple Palace Buddhist artifact granted by Sangji's temple; it is enormously heavy, spiritually resistant, and can become a Great-Strength White-Bone God-Demon. 170 227
- Skull Bowl — A ritual vessel from which Sangji drinks during meditation and receives revelations concerning his subordinates. 122
- [Female Earth] Subordinate Position Seal — A white-bone skull crown inherited from the Lord of the Charnel Forest; its refinement granted Sangji his Golden Core-level advancement. 477 481

- Fang Qing — Converter, master, and “Venerable One.” Fang Qing forcibly converted Sangji, later empowered him, used him as an agent, and enabled his refinement of the [Female Earth] Position Seal. 128 165 477 481
- Jiumoluo Jie — Senior Great Dharma King and former abbot of the Temple of All Living Beings Without Form. Sangji served under him, was entrusted with Jiumoluo Jie's sky-burial rite, and eventually succeeded him after his death. 308 420 422
- Lord of the Charnel Forest — Sangji's dharma lineage source and the origin of his White Bone Visualization. The dying Lord attempted to devour Sangji before leaving behind the Position Seal he later refined. 128 476 477

Story Role / Major Arcs
Deathless Temple and Forcible Conversion

Lord of the Charnel Forest's Successor
