| Feature | Value |
|---|---|
| Name | Golden Seat (金位) |
| Related terminology | Also described as a Fruit Seat in discussions of Dao attainment and authority 145 496. |
| Nature | A manifestation of a Great Dao, carrying its accumulated power, mysteries, and historical influences 569 579. |
| Role | Grants Golden Core True Lord standing and authority over a Dao lineage; controlling additional seats supports further advancement 487 500 721. |
| Associated systems | Central to the Breath-Nourishing Dao; also accessible through the Qi Refinement Way, as demonstrated by Profound Thunder 398 460. |
| First documented mention | Discussed as the goal of a Purple Mansion Peak demon’s cultivation 132. |
Power Progression
Golden Seats are Dao positions rather than a single advancing character. The following records show how their attainment and control support cultivation breakthroughs.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Perfected Purple Mansion — preparation for Gold | 145 146 | The conventional route requires four Divine Abilities corresponding to a seat’s mysteries, allowing the cultivator to draw its notice and refine Golden Nature. |
| Golden Core / True Lord — Guest Position | 164 165 | Sanji refines Grand Yellow Heaven through the Grotto-Heaven Golden Attainment Method. His reliance on external power results in a Guest Position and Spirit Immortal standing. |
| Golden Core / True Lord — Principal Position | 357 360 | Guangmu attains the Horn Wood Principal Position after displaying four perfected Divine Abilities and passing through withering and renewal. |
| Early Golden Core | 500 | Fang Qing attains the Ji Water Vacant Position and becomes Profound Abyss Moistening Salvation True Lord. Direct contact with the seat threatens his identity. |
| Mid Golden Core | 500 | Fang Qing combines Ji Water with his controlled Profound Thunder seat, using the Dao-Born Pearl to suppress their conflict. |
| Temporary Late Golden Core | 579 | Ji Water, Profound Thunder, and Wing Fire together sustain Fang Qing’s Late Golden Core strength for approximately half an hour. |
| Late Golden Core | 632 633 | Fang Qing manifests Cold Intercalation and advances naturally. The new seat has no predecessor’s imprint and closely suits Ji Water. |
| Golden Core Perfection strength | 633 644 | Fang Qing tests four-seat combinations and later displays Golden Core Perfection while wielding the Wing Fire Principal Position. Some combinations severely damage his Law Body. |
| Year Guardian | 676 682 | Fang Qing’s true body has attained Year Guardian standing. His exclusive control of Water Virtue obstructs the Great Sun’s attempted restoration. |
| Mid-stage Year Guardian | 742 | Fang Qing devours a Fire Virtue Year Guardian and balances Water and Fire within himself, at the cost of disrupting heaven and earth. |
Nature and Authority
- Dao-lineage sovereignty: A Golden Core True Lord is the master of a Fruit Seat and governs its lineage. Lesser immortals borrowing that master’s standing are restrained by the corresponding authority 721.
- Golden Nature: Golden Nature, Buddha nature, divine nature, and pill nature are treated as expressions of the same essence. Traditional Gold-Seeking methods seek this essence through Divine Abilities 145.
- Historical accumulation: Seats retain the imagery, accomplishments, imprints, and wills of previous holders. These influences accompany their power when a new True Lord ascends 579.
- Reciprocal influence: A seat shapes its cultivators, but exceptional cultivators can also change the seat’s imagery. Shi Tianzun seeks to introduce an imperial aspect into Beak Fire 718 724.
- Lineage-wide favor: A True Lord’s blessing is effectively the favor of the Fruit Seat itself. The Fang Family’s Ji Water cultivation benefits from two associated True Lords 552.
- Year Guardian immortality: The immortality of Year Guardians rests in heaven, earth, and the Golden Seats. Destroying those foundations threatens that immortality 688.
Position Hierarchy
Traditional Positions
The Supreme Simplicity Golden Book identifies five ranks. Attaining a Golden Seat does not necessarily mean becoming its highest or rightful holder 164.
| Position | Documented characteristics |
|---|---|
| Principal | The highest, rightful position. Guangmu occupies Horn Wood’s Principal Position, while Song Qingzhou later attains Zhen Water’s Principal Position 164 360 644. |
| Secondary | A distinct position within a lineage. The Phoenix’s loss of Tail Fire’s Secondary Position reduces her cultivation 500. |
| Primary | Another named rank in the five-position system. Heaven-Dawn Spirit Abyss Dragon Lord holds Shen Water’s Primary Position 164 554. |
| Guest | Grants True Lord standing but severely restricts changes of path. Fang Qing concludes that it offers no route to Year Guardian; Kitchen Lord’s Guest-position Stomach Earth collapses during his attempted breakthrough 409 577. |
| Vacant | A damaged or deficient position, not an absent seat. It still contains sufficient authority to confer Golden Core standing and expose its holder to the seat’s accumulated influences 500. |
An unoccupied Golden Seat is not the same thing as a Vacant Position. Profound Thunder is described as ownerless, whereas Fang Qing’s Ji Water Vacant Position is an existing but damaged share of authority 398 500.
Reforged Seats
- In the newly reopened heaven and earth, the twenty-eight Golden Seats initially have no separate master, subordinate, guest, or deficient positions. Each is complete and free of predecessor imprints 689 705.
- A Fruit Seat’s master can potentially divide personal authority to establish subordinate or deficient seats again 689.
- The twenty-eight-seat limit does not include additional seats obtained through methods such as Void Manifestation or Divine Elixirs 689.
Auxiliary Seats
Auxiliary Seats represent deputy authority within a Dao Path. Their prospects exceed those of ordinary immortals, but they remain below a true Fruit Seat master 721.
| Auxiliary Seat | Dao Virtue | Recipient of Fang Qing’s imprint |
|---|---|---|
| Rahu | Fire | First Phoenix 721 |
| Ketu | Earth | Gui Sang 721 |
| Bane Star | Water | Shi Tianfeng 721 |
| Purple Qi | Wood | An unnamed Wood Virtue Great Sage 721 |
- Fang Qing’s gifts mark the recipients’ auras within the seats; they do not immediately grant complete ownership or True Lord standing 721 722.
- Auxiliary authority can contribute to further Golden Core advancement. First Phoenix recognizes Rahu as a possible replacement for one of the Fire Virtue seats needed on her path 721.
- Auxiliary Seats can later be occupied and relinquished: Shi Tianzun exchanges Beak Fire for Rahu, then abdicates Rahu to Shi Taiyi 742 754.
Attainment and Control
Seeking a Golden Seat
The conventional Gold-Seeking route uses four Divine Abilities to attract a seat’s attention and obtain Golden Nature 145 146.
- Each ability must correspond to one of the seat’s current mysteries 146.
- Traditional rites burn away the four abilities to obtain Golden Nature and attain a Fruit Seat 145.
- Under ancient cultivation methods, a cultivator develops the beginnings of a Divine Ability at Dao Foundation, then senses the seat and creates three further abilities after entering Purple Mansion 146.
- These personally comprehended abilities naturally fit their creator and the seat, but the insight required places the ancient route beyond most cultivators 146.
- Shamanic cultivation is an exception: a Grand Witch develops a single wondrous power to its peak before seeking a Golden Seat 700.
Proving the Dao
Proving the Dao is more demanding than merely obtaining a seat. It requires supreme Dao accomplishments capable of winning the seat’s allegiance and introducing new imagery into it 724.
- Shi Tianzun intends to prove an imperial Beak Fire, rather than simply inherit its existing authority 724.
- Once a seat has passed through several masters, a new claimant must demonstrate potential surpassing those predecessors to prove the Dao 724.
- Fang Qing regards complete mastery of Ji Water—without needing the Dao-Born Pearl’s protection—as the point at which he has proven his Dao rather than merely sought a seat 579.
Void Manifestation
Void Manifestation can bring forth Golden Seats outside the established Sun, Moon, and Five Virtues paths 647.
- Fang Qing manifests Cold Intercalation through the combination of Lunar Yin and Ji Water 632.
- A newly manifested seat can lack historical baggage and the usual tribulation of taking an inherited position 633.
- Manifestation can also reveal a concealed seat. Young Master Yu succeeds only after committing his Golden Nature to the apparently empty place where Nether Warden must manifest 735.
- A seat can generate an innate sacred being: the awakening Profound Thunder seat gestates a human-bodied, dragon-headed Thunder God 496.
Seizure, Succession, and Indirect Control
Advancement does not always require personally occupying every additional seat. The Golden Book describes methods of controlling or influencing them instead 373 487.
| Method | Function |
|---|---|
| Seizing | Annexing a Fruit Seat or enslaving its holder; swallowing or killing a holder is also described as seizure 359 608. |
| Hiding / Concealing | Concealing a seat or its master. Kui Wood’s concealment causes others to forget Guangmu’s existence 359 360. |
| Borrowing | Obtaining and using a Fruit Seat’s Position Seal 487. |
| Regency | Controlling a position without personally occupying it, as Kui Zang does through a Horn Wood flood dragon 437. |
| Usurpation | Promoting a subordinate position to principal standing within the same lineage 608. |
| Abdication | A current holder voluntarily yields the Fruit Seat to another claimant 608 754. |
| Trading | Holders exchange seats. Shi Tianzun relinquishes Beak Fire in return for Rahu 742. |
| Nurturing | Fang Qing’s proposed term for controlling another lineage’s authority through offspring born to a Fruit Seat holder 487. |
Sealing with the Dao-Born Pearl
- The Pearl freezes Profound Thunder and its unborn Thunder God at the instant before birth, giving Fang Qing control without releasing either 496.
- It shields Fang Qing from Ji Water’s accumulated information and predecessor influences 500 579.
- Mastered seats can remain sealed while Fang Qing draws on their power through Omnipresence, enabling combinations without installing every seat directly in his body 633.
- Its suppression permits combinations that would otherwise cause immediate self-destruction 579.
Dangers and Restrictions
- Changed mysteries: Near-Antiquity alterations leave prescribed Divine Abilities unable to answer some Golden Seats. Perfecting an outdated set does not guarantee a viable breakthrough 146.
- Tribulation of holding position: Ascension exposes the claimant to an immense torrent of Dao information. Divinity may overwhelm humanity, erase individuality, or turn the holder into someone else 500 579.
- Monstrous failure: Suwu and Tu Shan Qi become evil creatures after failed attempts to seek Gold 146 466.
- Prison positions: A promising seat can become a dead end when proper positions change. Even successful True Lords may remain trapped by their lineage and inherited authority 357 360.
- Incompatible seats: The Golden Book warns against annexing across orthodoxies. Fang Qing’s exceptional safeguards allow experimentation, but unstable combinations still crack his Law Body 373 633.
- Blocked seats: Bi Water is filled with gestating flesh, making attainment disastrous. Fang Qing also detects hidden arrangements obstructing Heart Moon, Zhang Moon, and Biyue 443 552.
- Incumbent interference: Existing holders can obstruct later claimants. Wing Fire’s master cannot necessarily choose a successful successor, but can ensure that an unwanted claimant fails 408.
- Loss beyond the heavens: Seats connect their holders to the originating world. Venturing too far can strip away positions; the Phoenix loses Tail Fire before Wing Fire begins destabilizing 500.
- Inherited debts: Solar Yang carries obligations to heaven and earth that make even Shi Tianzun’s successful attainment unstable 755.
History
Near-Antiquity Crisis
The Golden Seats’ mysteries changed during Near Antiquity. Over the following eight thousand years, many cultivators died attempting breakthroughs with Divine Abilities that no longer matched their intended seats. Ancient methods offered a possible remedy through personal comprehension, but their difficulty prevented them from becoming a general solution 146.
By the time of Suwu’s attempt, True Lords had withdrawn from public life and Perfected Purple Mansion cultivators generally remained secluded while searching for a route to Gold. Suwu’s failure exposed the crisis directly: he became an evil creature whose attacks selectively targeted demons. Moluoshi and Sangji suspected sabotage by Cloud-Touching Cliff, but the involvement of that faction remained their inference 145 146.
Renewed Attainment and the Year-Seizing Game
Sanji’s Guest-position ascent through Grand Yellow Heaven and Guangmu’s Horn Wood attainment demonstrated that Golden Seat breakthroughs were again possible. By Chapter 371, the narrative records only two successful attainments across more than eight thousand six hundred years of the Near-Ancient Calendar 164 357 371.
The returning True Lords competed over the Year Guardian position through seizure, concealment, incarnations, and manipulated successors. Kui Zang’s concealment of Guangmu showed that a seat holder’s existence could be erased from collective memory without an ordinary bodily death 359 360 437.
Sealing and Reforging
Fang Qing’s suppression of Profound Thunder removed thunder tribulations from Primordial Beginning Heaven. He recognized that the same act could gradually weaken thunder materials, treasures, and cultivation traditions 496.
After heaven and earth reopened, the new Golden Seats were complete and clean, without the old divisions or predecessor imprints. Fang Qing subsequently distributed Auxiliary Seat imprints and used access to Dao authority to shape future successors and rivalries 689 721 722.
Documented Seats and Authorities
| Seat / Group | Domain or imagery | Documented significance |
|---|---|---|
| Ji Water | Sweet rain, spring water, Xun Wind, and inherited water imagery | Fang Qing attains its Vacant Position, restores its damaged authority, and eventually masters it without the Pearl’s protection 500 519 579. |
| Profound Thunder | Harmonizing yin and yang, punishing wickedness, destroying evil, and thunder | Sealed in Primordial Beginning Heaven for ten thousand years; later controlled by Fang Qing together with its unborn Thunder God 496 633. |
| Cold Intercalation | Ice, frost, sleet, hidden cold; between Water Virtue and Lunar Yin | Manifested by Fang Qing. Its emergence alters spiritual waters, cultivation, resources, and cold-weather phenomena 632 689. |
| Horn Wood | Life, death, flourishing, withering, and renewal | Guangmu attains its Principal Position. Suqing later seeks that position with his support 357 360 552. |
| Shen Water | Water authority with a documented connection to sword Dao | Heaven-Dawn Spirit Abyss Dragon Lord holds its Primary Position; Fang Qing later targets it for seizure 554 634. |
| Zhen Water | Rivers returning to the sea | Song Qingzhou consumes its seat and becomes True Lord Sea-Tide Clear Harmony of the Principal Position 644. |
| Bi Water | Nurturing and gestation | Its obstruction by a growing mass of flesh causes disastrous backlash for would-be claimants 443. |
| Four Moons | Heart Moon: newly risen moon; Zhang Moon: full moon; Biyue: cold-pool reflection and war; Weiyue: moon shadow and womb water | Three unoccupied seats contain obstacles and anchors for the ancient Lunar Yin Year Guardian’s lingering will 552. |
| Four Fires | Wing Fire, Tail Fire, Shi Fire, and Beak Fire | Constitute the established Fire Virtue route toward Year Guardian, with positions assigned by an earlier Year Guardian 466. |
| Stomach Earth | Earth Virtue | Sanji’s Guest-position attainment empowers Earth Virtue practitioners; the Guest position later fails during Kitchen Lord’s Year Guardian attempt 164 577. |
| Female Earth | Earth Virtue, ghosts, sorcery, and terrifying aspects | Sangji usurps its Principal Position with the aid of an immortal art and merit supplied by Fang Qing 308 608. |
| Nether Warden | Departed souls, evil spirits, reincarnation, ghost officials, and nether law | Kitchen Lord retains it as a fallback after failure; Young Master Yu later manifests it and restores the Nether Bureau’s reincarnation order 577 735. |
| Heart Demon | Minds, illusion, emotions, and desires | Left sealed by the Devil Ancestor as a substitute capable of resembling its creator; later stripped away by Fang Qing 647 676 682 687. |
| Causality | Interlinked causal threads | Allows Fang Qing to trace the Heart Demon lord’s incarnations and attack its survival network 676 687. |
| Shaman | Shamanic authority | Absent from the reopened Great Void and must be attained through Void Manifestation 700 708. |
| Solar Yang / Four Suns | Great Sun authority and dominion over flames | Solar Yang is pledged to heaven and earth, while the Four Suns seats are imprisoned in Eastern Sovereign Heaven. Shi Tianzun later attains Solar Yang as Great Sun Tathagata 709 750 755. |
